Description
Winner of the Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival. In the wilderness of the Bucharest Delta, an abandoned water reservoir just outside the bustling metropolis, the Enache family lived in perfect harmony with nature for two decades, sleeping in a hut on the lakeshore, catching fish barehanded, and following the rhythm of the seasons. When this area is transformed into a public national park, they are forced to leave behind their unconventional life and move to the city, where fishing rods are replaced by smartphones and idle afternoons are now spent in classrooms. As the family struggles to conform to modern civilization and maintain their connection to each other and themselves, they each begin to question their place in the world and what their future might be. With their roots in the wilderness, the nine children and their parents struggle to find a way to keep their family united in the concrete jungle. With an empathetic and cinematic eye, filmmaker Radu Ciorniciuc offers viewers, in his feature debut, a compelling tale of an impoverished family living on the fringes of society in Romania, fighting for acceptance and their own version of freedom. Product Description "A mid-career masterwork by legendary Hungarian art house auteur Be´la Tarr and the first of his internationally acclaimed trilogy of films written in collaboration with author La´szlo´ Krasznahorkai (including the legendary SA´TA´NTANGO´). DAMNATION (Ka´rhozat) chronicles the doomed affair between Bar Titanik regular Karrer (SA´TA´NTANGO´'s Miklo´s B. Sze´kely) and the cabaret singer (Vali Kerekes) he pines for while scheming to displace her brutish husband (Gyo¨rgy Cserhalmi). A poignant Communism allegory that solidified Tarr's unique aesthetic, DAMNATION is photographed in an exquisitely black & white palette underscored by the mesmerizing long takes that would come to be his trademark. Review Remarkable. --The Guardian Some of the most magnificent black-&-white images shot anywhere in the world. --The Village Voice (Béla Tarr is) one of cinema's most adventurous artists. --Martin Scorsese

Description
With Damnation, now available on 4K Ultra HD for the first time, BÉLA TARR emerged as one of the great filmmakers of European arthouse cinema. His signature cinematic style - haunting black and white imagery, brooding long takes and bleak landscapes - first materialises here, creating the foundation from which his later works develop (Sátántangó, Werckmeister Harmonies, The Turin Horse). In a desolated landscape, Karrer has lived for years, cut off from the rest of the world, passing his time by staring at dumpsters and disappearing under an endless rain. His only social links are the Titanik, a pub where he spends every night, and his boss, Willarsky. Attracted by a woman who sings in this bar, he tries to seduce her. INCLUDES: - One 4K UHD disc (Region Free) with the new 4K restoration of the film - One Blu-ray disc (Region B) which includes the new 4K restoration, presented in HD, and the special features - Macbeth (1982) - television film by Béla Tarr - Interviews with director Béla Tarr, composer Mihály Víg and actor Miklós Székely B. Description
Renowned as a silent-film pioneer and the man who refined Hollywood comedy with such masterpieces as Trouble in Paradise, The Shop Around the Corner, and To Be or Not to Be, Ernst Lubitsch also had another claim to fame: he helped invent the modern movie musical. With the advent of sound, and with audiences clamoring for “talkies,” Lubitsch combined his love of European operettas and his mastery of cinema to develop this entirely new genre. These elegant, bawdy films, made before strict enforcement of the moralizing Production Code, feature some of the greatest stars of early Hollywood (Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Claudette Colbert, Miriam Hopkins), as well as that elusive style of comedy that would thereafter be known as “the Lubitsch touch.” SPECIAL FEATURES An essay by author and film critic Michael Koresky THE LOVE PARADE Ernst Lubitsch’s first full talkie was also Hollywood’s first movie musical to integrate songs with narrative. Additionally, The Love Parade made stars out of toast-of-Paris Maurice Chevalier and girl-from-Philly Jeanette MacDonald, cast as a womanizing military attaché and the man-hungry queen of “Sylvania,” respectively. With its naughty innuendo and satiric romance, The Love Parade opened the door for a decade of witty screen battles of the sexes. MONTE CARLO Jeanette MacDonald’s independent-minded countess leaves her foppish prince fiancé at the altar, and whisks herself away to the Riviera. There, she strikes the fancy of the sly Count Rudolph (theater veteran Jack Buchanan), who poses as a hairdresser to get into her boudoir. Ernst Lubitsch’s follow-up to The Love Parade shows even more musical invention, and presents MacDonald at her haughtily sexy best. THE SMILING LIEUTENANT Maurice Chevalier’s randy Viennese lieutenant is enamored of Claudette Colbert’s freethinking, all-girl-orchestra-leading cutie. Yet complications ensue when the sexually repressed princess (newcomer Miriam Hopkins) of the fictional kingdom of Flausenthurm sets her sights on him. Ernst Lubitsch’s The Smiling Lieutenant is a delightful showcase for its rising female stars, who are never more charming than when Colbert tunefully instructs Hopkins, “Jazz Up Your Lingerie.” ONE HOUR WITH YOU Ernst Lubitsch reunites Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, this time as a seemingly blissful couple whose marriage hits the skids when her flirtatious school chum comes on to her husband a bit too strong. Necking in the park at nighttime, husbands and wives having casual dalliances, and a butler telling his master, “I did so want to see you in tights!”: Lubitsch’s final pre-Code musical is one of his sauciest escapades.

RADIANCE PRESENTS THIS CLASSIC FRENCH FILM NOIR WRITTEN BY LOUIS MALLE MAKING ITS DEBUT ON BLU-RAY IN THIS SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION. Clement (Jean-Louis Trintignant, Il sorpasso) is a wealthy son of an industrialist who lives a secret life as a right-wing terrorist. Double-crossed following an assassination attempt he flees to the countryside with his wife, Anne (Romy Schneider, La piscine) where they stay with his childhood friend, Paul (Henri Serre, Jules et Jim). She plays the cello. He plays the field. She's coltishly young. He's worldly and mature. Lovestruck conservatory student Ariane knows she's not like millionaire American playboy Frank Flanagan. But if she pretends to be just as much a cosmopolitan lover as he is, maybe the magic of l'amour will take hold. May-December romance is in bloom when Billy Wilder directs and Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper meet for Love in the Afternoon. Laughs, Parisian settings, champagne elegance -- Wilder, in his first collaboration with long-time cowriter I.A.L. Diamond, delivers them all in a souffle-light homage to his filmmaking idol Ernst Lubitsch, punctuating it by casting Lubitsch alumnus Maurice Chevalier, the cinema's ambassador of Gallic charm who smoothly plays Ariane's detective father. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* In the mid ‘90s, prolific W.A.V.E. Productions actor Dave Castiglione set out to write and direct his own brand of auteurist, SOV productions under the banner of Sharkey Video. Utilizing contributions from many of his former W.A.V.E. cohorts, his anterior Love is a Stranger duology finds Castiglione at his most fundamental, blending slasher, erotic thriller, gothic horror, and eccentric fetish elements into a lurid pair of backyard epics that buoyantly revel in both prurient sleaze and the regional charms of their South Jersey locales. In LOVE IS A STRANGER (1994), young Gwen Stevens attempts to escape her controlling and abusive boyfriend Craig by taking a job at the studio of a local photographer and lothario named Landon Love. Unfortunately for Gwen, many of Love’s female staff have already inexplicably disappeared, only to be found murdered at the hands of a mysterious, necktie obsessed psychopath. Broad South Jersey accents, sensual raw meat massages, and climactic mud tussling abound in Castiglione’s SOV debut which features performances by Tina Krause (Limbo), Christine Cavalier (Red Lips), and Ivory Blackwood (Bloody Creek). In LOVE IS A STRANGER AGAIN (1997), Gwen rekindles her relationship with Craig and returns to her job at Landon Love’s photography studio, still haunted and traumatized by the string of murders she narrowly survived. Plagued by nightmares and bouts of paranoia, she becomes convinced that her assassin is still stalking her. Could the psychotic murder Bebe still be alive? Has she returned from the grave to seek revenge? Or is it all just a figment of Gwen’s shattered psyche? Find out in the elaborate and elusive sequel which features performances by Dawn Murphy (Backwoods Marcy), Laura Giglio (Sorority Slaughter), and Dean Paul (Hayride Slaughter). From Rouben Mamoulian, the legendary director of City Streets, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Song of Songs, Queen Christina, Becky Sharp, The Mark of Zorro and Silk Stockings, comes a madcap musical tour de force of infectious melody, effortless vivacity and ceaseless invention from first frame to last. Building on a foundation of songs by Rodgers and Hart (Babes in Arms, Pal Joey), Mamoulian shepherds Maurice Chevalier (The Merry Widow) and Jeanette MacDonald (Rose-Marie) through this exuberant romp. Carefree tailor Maurice (Chevalier) leaves a backlot Paris where music literally radiates from every shop, sidewalk and boudoir to collect on a past-due bill at a recalcitrant aristocratic client’s family chateau. Mistaken for royalty, Maurice runs a gauntlet of lunatic blue-bloods, including love-happy Myrna Loy (The Thin Man) and screwball icon Charlie Ruggles (Bringing Up Baby). But it is Princess Jeanette’s (MacDonald) closely guarded heart that Maurice desires and it will take every ounce of his ingenious pluck to woo her without revealing his well-meaning romantic deception. In a post-apocalyptic future ravaged by overpopulation, a lone survivor (Martin McCann) mercilessly protects his remote sliver of property from intruders. When a mother (Olwen Fouere) and daughter (Mia Goth, A Cure For Wellness) in search of food and shelter show up at his doorstep, he’s suspicious, but cautiously allows them in. Soon, an uneasy alliance, borne of necessity, forms between the trio: but distrust and paranoia threaten to give way to violence at any moment. The Survivalist, the intense, heart-pounding debut feature from Stephen Fingleton, viscerally evokes the fear, tension, and all-consuming desperation of life in a kill-or-be-killed dystopia.

Description
The Valiant Ones is perhaps the last true wuxia film directed by celebrated Taiwanese filmmaker King Hu, an undisputed master of the genre. Shot back-to-back with The Fate of Lee Khan (but not released until two years later), it stands as a worthy follow-up to his earlier works Come Drink with Me, Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen. During the reign of the Jiajing Emperor (Chao Lei), China's coastal regions have come under attack by wokou - Japanese pirates under the leadership of the infamous Hakatatsu (Sammo Hung). To combat this threat, the Emperor tasks a trusted general, Zhu Wan (Tu Kuang-chi), with assembling a group of skilled warriors to find and eliminate the pirates. Under the command of General Yu Dayou (Roy Chiao), the band of soldiers - including husband-and-wife sword-fighters Wu Ji-yuan (Wing Bai) and Wu Ruo-shi (Feng Hsu) - set out to draw Hakatatsu, his ally Xu Dong (Han Ying-chieh) and their pirate clan into a series of spectacular showdowns. Inspired by historical events and featuring several storied figures drawn from Chinese history, The Valiant Ones is a standout wuxia film produced during the dying days of the genre, as audience tastes were shifting towards more grounded kung fu cinema. The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present the film on 4K Ultra HD for the first time. Viva l Italia is a documentary made after the event, trying to figure out what happened. I tried to place myself in front of the events of a century ago, the way a documentarist would have done who had the good fortune to follow Garibaldi s campaign with his camera. Roberto Rossellini To celebrate the centenary of Italy, the Italian government commissioned Rossellini to make a biopic of Giuseppe Garibaldi, one that would follow his exploits with the Thousand and their role in the country s unification. Rossellini approached the film as he had Francesco, giullare di Dio, presenting the main character in neo-realist mode, as though making a documentary. Restored by Arrow Films from the original negative, this disc marks the first UK home video release of Viva l Italia in any format, allowing English-speaking audience to discover another Rossellini classic.
