*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* In the claustrophobic final days of Franco's Spain, María José (Victoria Abril), a teenage trans girl, has always known who she is—even as her brutish father and a society built on dictatorship-era moral codes refuse to see it. Sent from her provincial home to the neon-stained cabarets of Barcelona as a punishment, she instead finds a clandestine freedom there: a community of trans women, drag performers, and outcasts orbiting the magnetic Bibí (Bibiana Fernández), whose mere existence is a quiet detonation. As María José steps into her own name and her own body, she must navigate predatory men, uncertain love, and the slow, defiant emergence of a self that four decades of dictatorship had tried to erase from the realm of the possible. Made by acclaimed auteur Vicente Aranda (The Blood Splattered Bride) when Francoist censorship was crumbling, and just months before it was formally abolished, CHANGE OF SEX (Cambio de sexo, 1977) is a landmark of trans representation in Spanish cinema—arriving the same year a Spanish court legally recognized a trans woman as female for the first time, as the country began to imagine lives it had spent forty years denying. The film features luminous, career-launching performances from future Almodóvar regulars Victoria Abril (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, High Heels) and Bibiana Fernández (Kika, Law of Desire), whose presence here marks the prologue to a queer cinematic explosion to come. Shot with a radiant naturalism by Oscar-winning cinematographer Néstor Almendros (Days of Heaven) in his only Spanish feature, and never before available on disc in North America, this restored, fully uncut high-definition presentation brings one of Aranda's most quietly radical works to Blu-ray for the very first time. Essential viewing for admirers of transgressive cinema, trans film history, and the rebellious culture of the Transition. Bonus Features: 1. 2K Restoration from original negative 2. Original Spanish soundtrack with newly translated English subtitles 3. "An Act of Freedom" - A new interview with actress María Elías 4. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Tatsumi, an unassuming fisherman, makes his real livelihood by cleaning up dead bodies for local yakuza gangs. With his own personal motives in tow, Tatsumi vows to mentor and protect Aoi to the bitter end of her blood-soaked crusade. Gritty, mean and intense from the get-go, TATSUMI recalls the explosive “true document” yakuza films of celebrated director Kinji Fukasaku while adding a fresh perspective to its violent proceedings. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Two classic sex comedies from Québec’s “Maple Syrup Porno” movement TWO WOMEN IN GOLD (DEUX FEMMES EN OR) – Feeling neglected by their husbands, bored housewives Fernande (Naked Lunch’s Monique Mercure) and Violette (Panic’s Louise Turcot) embrace a new spirit of liberated promiscuity, delighting in casual sex with the men in their suburban neighbourhood. After establishing himself as a director of documentary shorts, Claude Fournier graduated to feature filmmaking with this explicit sex comedy written in collaboration with his wife Marie-José Raymond. (LA POMME, LA QUEUE ET LES PEPINS) – Riding high on the sexual vitality of their blossoming romance, Martial (Gina’s Donald Lautrec) and Louise (The Red Kitchen’s Han Masson) are thrown a curveball when Martial emerges from their wedding day with a crippling case of impotence. As Louise grows frustrated with her new state of celibacy, friends, family, and scientists join forces to help Martial recapture his virility. Four years after Two Women in Gold, Fournier and Raymond partnered with the “Maple Syrup Porno” pioneers at Cinépix to deliver an exercise in heightened bad taste and bawdy screwball absurdity that remains their most outrageous effort. They have to deal with disapproving parents, as well as the local priest, who thinks the youth of today is rotten. This 1951 film unknowingly helped establish the reputation of Sweden as the land of sin, just because of a short, innocent skinny dip, fanning the image of Sweden as a sexually permissive country, and eventually spawning a wave of “Swedish Sin” films exported all over the world. The film remains to this day one of Sweden’s biggest international box office successes of all time. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. As the 70s progressed and the poliziottesco field grew more crowded, some directors sought new frontiers and different spaces, growing the genre into unusual locales and sometimes even shooting films abroad. In this second volume, we bring you a trio of Italian crime rarities which made creative use of atypical settings. BLUE NUDE: Rocco has come to New York City from Italy, confident that as long as he hangs in there, he’ll one day make it in showbiz. In between wandering Times Square dazzled by its glitzy signage, a friend ropes him into acting in a hardcore film where he encounters Lilly, an established female porn actor. Barely scraping by, he finds himself taken advantage of by managers, young women, and crooked cops, all eager for a wide-eyed immigrant to abuse or extort. He hopes for a future with Lilly, but when harsh violence enters into Rocco's life, nothing can stop him from lashing out in this sordid world in which he's ended up. A one-of-a-kind document of late 70s street level Manhattan (and actual period sex film sets) from writer/director Luigi Scattini (Witchcraft 70), it stars Gerardo Amato (Sweets for a Stranger) as Rocco, Susan McBain (Barbara Broadcast), Renato Romano (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), Robert Kerman (Debbie Does Dallas), and director/actor Carter Stevens (The Passions of Carol). NO ALLA VIOLENZA (NO TO VIOLENCE aka DEATH HUNT): In the picturesque Sicilian port city of Messina, Inspector Ettore Manetti (Al Cliver) is beginning to crumble. Violent crime is rampant, bikers have just beaten and killed a police officer, and now he’s now been handed the job of catching three dangerous prison escapees. As the trio begins a series of kidnappings, they run down a little girl while narrowly evading capture. Tano, the girl’s father, begins his own vigilante crusade as he ferociously strikes down anyone in his path in search of the men responsible. Exceedingly, violence is no longer limited to just the criminals. Ostensibly a passion project from prolific Messina-born actor Tano Cimarosa (Reflections in Black), who's credited with writing, directing, and playing the vigilante role, this regional film liberally showcases both scenic locations and shocking brutality. Also starring Paola Quattrini (The Case of the Bloody Iris), Ninetto Davoli (The Decameron), and Federico Boido (I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death). POLIZIA SELVAGGIA (SAVAGE POLICE) aka CANI (MURDERER): Ahmet toils away in Istanbul’s lowest rung of petty crime, berated even by other thieves who call him the Leech. Stalking the streets for any potential score, he snatches a man’s briefcase and steals his car, accidentally killing a detective in the process. When a manhunt ensues, Ahmet strains to flee the country, emboldened by the fact that the briefcase was packed with cash. Murat (Turkish star Tarık Akan), partner of the dead detective, sets out on his own path of vengeance while Ahmet’s cruel desperation forces him into taking hostages in order to evade the police. This ambitious Turkish-Italian co-production written and directed by Guido Zurli (Black Deep Throat) heaps on psychotic sleaze and a truly vicious, depraved antagonist in Ahmet. Also starring Karin Well (Burial Ground), Edilio Kim (A White Dress for Marialé), and George Ardisson (The Long Hair of Death). Bonus Features: 1. 3-disc Region Free Blu-ray Set 2. Newly scanned and restored from their 35mm original negatives 3. Newly translated English subtitles for all films BLUE NUDE: 1. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* "A far-reaching meditation on the relationship between individual and society" (Film Comment), LE JOLI MAI is a portrait of Paris and Parisians shot during May 1962. It is a film with several thousand actors, including a poet, a student, an owl, a housewife, a stockbroker, a competitive dancer, two lovers, General de Gaulle, and several cats. Filmed just after the March ceasefire between France and Algeria, LE JOLI MAI documents Paris during a turning point in French history: the first time since 1939 that France was not involved in any war. Part I, "A Prayer from the Eiffel Tower," documents personal attitudes and feelings around Paris. A salesman feels free only when he is driving his car, and then only if there is not too much traffic. A working-class mother of eight has just gotten the larger apartment that she had been wanting for years. The space capsule of American astronaut John Glenn is examined by a group of admiring children. Two investors talk about their careers and adventures. A couple in love since their teens discuss the possibility of eternal happiness. At a middle class wedding banquet, the guests are raucous while the bride is quiet, dignified and reserved. Part II, "The Return of Fantomas," is an investigation of the political and social life of the city. Marker and Lhomme alternate between public events and private discussions: the former focusing on the Algerian situation, such as a funeral for people killed in Paris street demonstrations after the Algerian settlement. Meanwhile, the latter includes a conversation with two girls about the state of France; a meeting with a pair of engineers who describe the potential of the current technological revolution; an African student who discusses his own response to the French and the Parisians' reaction to his skin color; a worker-priest forced to choose between the Church and his fellow workers; and an Algerian worker describing conflict he has experienced with native Frenchmen. The film ends with sweeping views of Paris, the facades of its prisons, and the faces of its people as they struggle to make sense of their moment in history. Bonus Features: 1. Playtime in Paris, directed by Catherine Varlin (1962, 27 mins) 2. Interview with Pierre Lhomme (2015, 20 mins) 3. 16-page booklet Top Similar From the Brand Questions Reviews Le Joli Mai (The Lovely Month of May) [Blu-ray] Le Joli Mai The Lovely Month of May

By turns violent, surreal, and doomily crushing, this obscure horror anthology centers around traditional Chinese ideas of the afterlife, updated for the early 1970s. Named for its longest story, BLOOD REINCARNATION spans the worlds of ghosts, murder, vengeance, and the dogged fury of deeds left undone—even from beyond the grave. THE TREASURE. When a man, his godmother, and his pregnant wife believe they've unearthed buried treasure, greed overcomes them, and in the ensuing quarrel, the godmother is killed. But when the wife is in labor and facing a difficult birth, could it be the work of the godmother's vengeful spirit? 2. THE WANTON. A married woman and her lover, eager to continue their affair unimpeded, lock her husband inside a wooden crate and dump it into the sea for him to drown. Before long, strange events all having to do with water start to impact the couple, as it seems the husband's ghost seeks retribution for his own aqueous agony. 3. LIU TIANSU. Esteemed doctor and healer Liu Tiansu is summoned by a mercenary to the county magistrate's compound. There, he's ordered to save the life of the magistrate's ailing fourth mistress. Robert Alda stars alongside musical greats Al Jolson, Paul Whiteman, and Oscar Levant in this lavish fictionalized biography of composer George Gershwin. The film traces Gershwin's rise from a song plugger for a Manhattan music publishing company to the heights of international fame and fortune. Gershwin's first big hit is Swanee, introduced on Broadway by Al Jolson (playing himself). In collaboration with his lyricist brother, Ira (Herbert Rudley), George pens hit after hit in show after show. But George's kindly old music teacher wants his prize pupil to aspire to something more artistic. Gershwin responds with Rhapsody in Blue, which debuts at Aeolian Hall in 1924 under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman (also playing himself). As his fame and workload grows, George finds he has no time at all for romance; the two ladies in his life both eventually realize that they'll always have to play second fiddle to Gershwin's muse. Newly remastered from 4K scans of nitrate materials, this new Blu-ray disc restores over 12 minutes of footage never before seen by the general public, and also includes the outstanding overture of Gershwin melodies which only accompanied the film during its New York and Hollywood premiere engagements.

Description

His films have been called raw, outrageous, sensational, and daring. In four decades of directing, Samuel Fuller created a legendarily idiosyncratic oeuvre, examining U.S. history and mythmaking in westerns, film noirs, and war epics. And, characteristically, it all began with a bang: after “printing the legend” with the elegant B pictures I Shot Jesse James and The Baron of Arizona, he got himself into hot water with the FBI with The Steel Helmet, the first American movie to portray the Korean War. These three independent films—showing off Fuller’s genre diversity, gutter wit, and subversive force—set the stage for his controversial career in moviemaking. INCLUDES An essay by film critic Nick Pinkerton I SHOT JESSE JAMES After years of crime reporting, screenwriting, and authoring pulp novels, Samuel Fuller made his directorial debut with the lonesome ballad of Robert Ford (played by Red River’s John Ireland), who fatally betrayed his notorious friend Jesse James. At once modest and intense, I Shot Jesse James is an engrossing pocket portrait of guilt and psychological torment, and an auspicious beginning for the maverick filmmaker. THE BARON OF ARIZONA In one of his own favorite roles, Vincent Price portrays legendary swindler James Addison Reavis, who in 1880 concocted an elaborate and dangerous hoax to name himself the “Baron” of Arizona, and therefore inherit all the land in the state. Samuel Fuller adapts this tall tale to film with fleet, elegant storytelling and a sly sense of humor. THE STEEL HELMET The Steel Helmet marked Samuel Fuller’s official arrival as a mighty cinematic force. Despite its relatively low budget, this portrait of Korean War soldiers dealing with moral and racial identity crises remains one of the director’s most gripping, realistic depictions of the blood and guts of war, as well as a reflection of Fuller’s irreducible social conscience. So controversial were the film’s comments on domestic and war crimes (American bigotry, the Japanese American World War II internment camps) that Fuller became the target of an FBI investigation.
