Description
Genius provocateur Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses), an influential figure in the Japanese New Wave of the 1960s, made one of his most startling political statements with the compelling pitch-black satire Death by Hanging. In this macabre farce, a Korean man is sentenced to death in Japan but survives his execution, sending the authorities into a panic about what to do next. At once disturbing and oddly amusing, Oshima s constantly surprising film is a subversive and surreal indictment of both capital punishment and the treatment of Korean immigrants in his country. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - New interview with critic Tony Rayns - New high-definition digital transfer of director Nagisa Oshima s 1965 experimental short documentary Diary of Yunbogi - Trailer - New English subtitle translation - PLUS: An essay by critic Howard Hampton

Description
Proof of the Man is a compelling exploration of racial identity and the trauma of the postwar occupation period framed in the form of a whodunnit. Movie mogul Haruki Kadokawa changed the landscape of Japanese cinema for good when he introduced the concept of the blockbuster to the country with this gripping crime drama featuring an all-star cast. When mixed-raced Johnny Hayward (Flower Travellin' Band vocalist Joe Yamanaka) heads from his Harlem home to Tokyo, he becomes the victim of a brutal stabbing in the elevator of a plush hotel hosting a catwalk show by elite fashion designer Kyoko (Mariko Okada). That same night, Kyoko's son with her powerful politician husband Yohei (Toshiro Mifune) is involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident and flees the country. Suspecting the incidents may be linked, Detective Munesue (Yusaku Matsuda, The Game Trilogy) heads to New York to investigate Johnny's background. Here he is partnered with local detective Ken Shuftan (George Kennedy, Airport), whose own links to Japan dredge up painful memories from Munesue's childhood. Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Seiichi Morimura by director Junya Sato (The Bullet Train, Manhunt) and screenwriter Zenzo Matsuyama (The Human Condition trilogy), and shot on location in Japan and New York by veteran cinematographer Shinsaku Himeda (Pigs and Battleships, Vengeance is Mine), Proof of the Man is a compelling exploration of racial identity and the trauma of the postwar occupation period framed in the form of a whodunnit. Arrow Video is proud to present the film for the very first time outside Japan for the home-video market in a brand new transfer sourced from a new 4K restoration by Kadokawa. Description
*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Tatsumi, an unassuming fisherman, makes his real livelihood by cleaning up dead bodies for local yakuza gangs. When criminal intrigue leads to the vicious murder of his ex-girlfriend by one of the gangsters, it thrusts her hot-headed teenage sister Aoi (a tour de force by ingénue Kokoro Morita) onto an unbridled path of vengeance. With his own personal motives in tow, Tatsumi vows to mentor and protect Aoi to the bitter end of her blood-soaked crusade. Gritty, mean and intense from the get-go, TATSUMI recalls the explosive “true document” yakuza films of celebrated director Kinji Fukasaku while adding a fresh perspective to its violent proceedings. Director Hiroshi Shoji flexes his auteur chops with stylish panache that never belies the genre’s misanthropic DNA. His naturalistic direction and the cast’s breathtaking performances render TATSUMI a “tense, brutally realistic and an overall great film” (Asian Movie Pulse). Bonus Features: 1. The Making of Tatsumi featurette 2. Booklet with essay by film writer Hayley Scanlon Top Similar From the Brand Questions Reviews Tatsumi [Blu-ray] Tatsumi
