Deaf Crocodile presents new restorations of three films by Soviet-Armenian animator Lev Atamanov. In The Snow Queen (1957), adapted from Hans Christian Andersen, the resourceful Gerda sets out on an epic journey to rescue her friend Kay from the Snow Queen's frozen embrace — the film Hayao Miyazaki credited with inspiring him to become an animator, its influence plainly visible in Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. The Scarlet Flower (1952) spins a Beauty and the Beast-like fable in which a sea captain plucks a scarlet flower promised to his youngest daughter, Nastenka, only for the outraged beast who owns it to demand a sacrifice — and Nastenka gives herself up as the creature's prisoner on an enchanted isle. The Key (1961), drawn in a sharp, angular mid-century style unlike Atamanov's lush earlier work, is a surreal parable weighing magic against good hard work: three wacky fairies arrive to bless a newborn with an enchanted ball of yarn, while his no-nonsense grandfather would rather give him common sense, a good hammer and a strong work ethic.
