Description
Conflict is a love triangle with murder at its heart, an atmospheric film noir of rainy nights, looming shadows, fatal romance and a trench-coated killer that walks out of the mist -- all directed by Curtis Bernhardt, a filmmaker skilled in the Expressionistic style of his native Germany. The story embraces the perfect noir topic: the almost-perfect crime. Humphrey Bogart portrays Richard Mason, married to nagging Katherine but in love with her sunny sister. Shortly after a fifth-year wedding celebration at the home of a friend, Richard decides to remove the obstacle to his happiness. He kills Katherine, carefully leaving no evidence of his guilt. Or at least he thinks he killed her- until mysterious events cause Richard to fear Katherine is very much alive!

Description
This collection features three film noir classics: CITY OF SHADOWS (1955) – Their Business Was “Legitimate” — Because the Law Couldn’t Touch Them! Iconic screen tough Victor McLaglen (The Informer, Klondike Annie) is Big Tim Channing, a small-time racketeer who makes a living supplying old, out-of-date slot machines to businesses. He strikes up a prosperous partnership with newsboy Dan Mason when the precocious kid shows him how to corner the slot-machine racket and, at the same time, put his crooked competitors out of the running. But when Dan grows up and graduates from law school, it thrusts old Tim into a compromising position. From William Witney, director of the legendary serials Daredevils of the Red Circle and Adventures of Captain Marvel, and co-starring John Baer (We’re No Angels), Kathleen Crowley (Curse of the Undead) and Anthony Caruso (Never Steal Anything Small). CRASHOUT (1955) – It Blasts the Screen with Violence! Six ruthless convicts break out of prison and frantically try to avoid an extensive manhunt. Arthur Kennedy (Bright Victory) co-stars with a legendary lineup of Hollywood heavies: William Bendix (The Web), Luther Adler (D.O.A.), William Talman (Big House, U.S.A.), Gene Evans (Fixed Bayonets!) and Marshall Thompson (It! The Terror from Beyond Space). Once the coast is clear, they set out on a long and dangerous journey by foot, train and car to retrieve bank loot. After barely surviving two deadly incidents, the gang seeks refuge in a farmhouse as the action reaches a fever pitch. Ironically, the men start to realize that it’s not the law that they need to worry about. A hardboiled, edge-of-your-seat noir produced by Ida Lupino’s Filmakers Releasing Organization for director Lewis R. Foster (Those Redheads from Seattle). Cinematography by the masterly Russell Metty (Touch of Evil). FINGER MAN (1956) – I Put the Finger on Public Enemy Number One! Frank Lovejoy (The Hitch-Hiker, House of Wax) stars as ex-con Casey Martin, who is caught red-handed while heisting a truck shipment. When he discovers that his sister has now become a desperate drug addict after working for gruff bootlegger Dutch Becker (Forrest Tucker, Sands of Iwo Jima), Martin accepts the deal that the T-men offer him and goes to work undercover to nail Dutch and his gang. Peggy Castle (99 River Street) plays Gladys Baker, the gangster’s associate who falls for the finger man. Timothy Carey (The Killing) plays Lou Terpe, the finger man’s former cellmate and a particularly sadistic member of Dutch’s crew. A crime-busting noir yarn spun by director Harold D. Schuster (Loophole). Special Features: • NEW HD Masters by Paramount Pictures • NEW Audio Commentary for CITY OF SHADOWS by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani • NEW Audio Commentary for CRASHOUT by Author/Film Historian Alan K. Description
Product Description A symbologist is caught in a 2000-year-old web of secrecy and uncovers the truth about The Holy Grail -- a truth that could shatter the very foundations of Western Civilization. Amazon.com Critics and controversy aside, The Da Vinci Code is a verifiable blockbuster. Combine the film's huge worldwide box-office take with over 100 million copies of Dan Brown's book sold, and The Da Vinci Code has clearly made the leap from pop-culture hit to a certifiable franchise. The leap for any story making the move from book to big screen, however, is always more perilous. In the case of The Da Vinci Code, the plot is concocted of such a preposterous formula of elements that you wouldn’t envy screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the man tasked with making this story filmable. The script follows Dan Brown’s book as closely as possible while incorporating a few needed changes, including a better ending. And if you’re like most of the world, by now you’ve read the book and know how it goes: while lecturing in Paris, noted Harvard Professor of Symbology Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is summoned to the Louvre by French police to help decipher a bizarre series of clues left at the scene of the murder of the chief curator. Enter Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), gifted cryptologist. Neveu and Langdon team up to solve the mystery, and from there the story is propelled across Europe, ballooning into a modern-day mini-quest for the Holy Grail, where secret societies are discovered, codes are broken, and murderous albino monks are thwarted… oh, and alternative theories about the life of Christ and the beginnings of Christianity are presented too, of course. It’s not the typical formula for a stock Hollywood thriller. In fact, taken solely as a mystery, the movie almost works--despite some gaping holes--mostly just because it keeps moving. Brown’s greatest trick was to have the entire story take place in one day, so the action is forced to keep moving, despite some necessary pauses for exposition. As a screen couple, Hanks and Tautou are just fine together but not exactly memorable; meanwhile Sir Ian McKellen’s scenery-chewing as pivotal character Sir Leigh Teabing is just what the film needed to keep it from taking itself too seriously. The whole thing is like a good roller-coaster ride: try not to think too much about it--just sit back and enjoy the trip. --Daniel Vancini Stills from The Da Vinci Code (click for larger image)

Two more early Brit Noirs from Cohen Film Collection, digitized in association with the British Film Institute. In DANCING WITH CRIME (1947), Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim, married in real life at the time, put themselves in harms way when they go undercover to investigate the murder of a friend with ties to black market racketeers. Watch for Dirk Bogarde and Diana Dors in uncredited roles. A true rarity, William Cameron Menzies’ THE GREEN COCKATOO was completed in 1937, but not released until 1940. It is often cited as one of the earliest of the British Noirs and helped set the stage for the classical period of Brit Noir which flourished in the years following WWII. It’s a taut little thriller based on a Graham Greene story, directed by the American William Cameron Menzies, and featuring a stellar cast and crew. After witnessing the murder of a racketeer, a young woman is pursued by both gangsters and the police. She is aided by a Soho entertainer, who is the brother of the victim.

Following on from the enormous success of his breakthrough film Django, Franco Nero returned to the Wild West (Almería, Spain) to star in the same year s Texas Adios, which was released as Django 2 in some countries. Here he plays tough gunslinger Burt Sullivan, a sheriff who, along with his younger brother (Alberto Dell'Acqua, Endgame), journeys to Mexico to hunt down the sadistic bandit Cisco Delgado and avenge his father s murder. When Burt and his brother fall in with a group of Mexican revolutionaries, the stage is set for a violent climatic confrontation... Directed by veteran helmsman Ferdinado Baldi, best known for the cult Western Blindman (starring Beatles tub-thumper Ringo Starr) and the 3D extravaganza Comin' at Ya!, Texas Adios is a lesser-known Spaghetti Western gem, which boasts rapid-fire action scenes, stunning locations and stylish cinematography courtesy of Enzo Barboni (Django, Nightmare Castle). Product Description From the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister comes Dark Skies: a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family. Amazon.com Producer Jason Blum, who scored major successes with micro-budget horror hits Paranormal Activity and Sinister, applies the same high-voltage approach to this well-crafted thriller about a suburban family under assault from malevolent forces. Writer-director Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) adds an interesting element of zeitgeist to the proceedings by translating the family's financial instability--Dad (Josh Hamilton) searches in vain for work while Mom (Keri Russell) struggles to keep the family afloat with the meager returns from her real estate job--into a harbinger of unexplainable incidents, including doors and windows mysteriously unlocked and birds crashing into the house. As the phenomena increase in frequency and intensity, it becomes evident that the family has been targeted by a presence with apparent designs on the youngest son (Kadan Rockett), who already maintains a relationship with an unseen "friend." It all unfolds under an umbrella of slow-building dread, but by the time Dark Skies reaches its conclusion, Stewart provides little beyond a barrage of visual and sonic shock moments, which plays havoc on viewers' nerves but fails to deliver a genuinely frightening experience. He does have solid support from the perennially unsung Russell and Hamilton, as well as character actor J.K. Simmons, who lends a lot of credence to the picture as a paranormal abduction expert, but ultimately, Dark Skies will be most appreciated by fans of Blum's particular approach to otherworldly suspense. The Blu-ray includes commentary by Stewart, Blum, executive producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and editor Peter Gvozdas, who largely focuses on how the film's many technical aspects were achieved on a modest budget, while a 14-minute collection of deleted scenes offers noisier but mostly inconsequential moments, including an underfed alternate ending. Trailers for other Starz/Anchor Bay genre releases round out the two-disc Blu-ray/DVD/Ultraviolet set. --Paul Gaita
