The words "Weird" & "Quirky" don't have enough gravity to really describe this movie. It's actually layers upon layers of weirdness, and it was made way before its time. It's influence is apparent in the movies of lots of modern directors like Wes Anderson (Anderson's early films clearly rip the mood and tone of Harold and Maude) and The Farrelly Brothers (Cameron Diaz, as "Mary" calls it the "probably the greatest love story of our time." in It's Something About Mary).
