Mission accomplished! Errol Flynn, who brought boyish bravado to The Adventures of Robin Hood, Dodge City, Gentleman Jim and other screen yarns, turns in a mature, acclaimed performance as the leader of a paratrooper patrol stranded in Burma. It's "one of the few features of which I am proud," Flynn later said. There's reason for pride. "This is one of the finest World War II films made during the war," The Movie Guide says. "One of the best war movies," Guide for the Film Fanatic's Danny Peary wrote, "and among the grimmest." Raoul Walsh directs the hard-hitting action, shot in rugged California locations so similar to Burma that veterans of that campaign refused to believe the crew hadn't somehow sneaked into Asia.

Errol Flynn stars in Mark Twain's classic tale of two nearly identical boys from vastly different worlds who trade places as--The Prince and The Pauper. As Lady Jane Seymour (Joan Valerie), consort to King Henry VIII (Montagu Love) gives birth to Prince Edward Tudor (Bobby Mauch), Tom Canty (Billy Mauch) is born in slums not far from the palace. These two boys grow up in London--one in a life of privilege, the other in poverty--until one day they meet, realize they could pass as twins and decide to trade places for a day. But fate traps each in the other's life, with only Miles Hendon (Flynn) as their ally. Now, their survival and the fate of a nation depend on these two boys convincing the royal court of their true identities.

"The first thing a cop learns is that he can't trust nobody but his partners," Detective Danny Ciello tells an assistant D.A. "I sleep with my wife, but I live with my partners. I will never give them up." From Robert Daley's riveting book about New York City police-corruption investigations, director/cowriter Sidney Lumet's film portrays a squad that pays a terrible price when one in its ranks does just that. Treat Willams (as Ciello, inspired by real-life undercover narcotic cop Robery Leuci), Jerry Orbach, Bob Balaban and Lindsay Crouse give standout performances in this gripping film. Lumet also stands out, garnering the New York Film Critics Best Director Award and an Oscar nomination (iwth Jay Presson Allen) for the screenplay.
