Description
Disc 1 contains the feature film (the complete film, from the 2K restoration). The set's interview extras are on Disc 2, which the store lists as a separate product. When young Hanzel Harana (Yul Servo) is found shot dead one winter night on West Side Avenue in Jersey City, Filipino detective Juan Mijares (Joel Torre) investigates the Filipino youth gangs who deal in shabu — crystal meth. Interviewing Hanzel's mother, who has remarried an American, his ex-soldier grandfather, and his American-born girlfriend, Mijares finds his search widening into larger questions: why so many Filipinos emigrated to this cold new land, the conditions their children grow up in, and the buried past the detective himself carries. Shot on 16mm at the turn of the millennium by a young Lav Diaz, the film is an epic about Filipino immigration across generations.

Description
A hypnotic journey engraved in images of staggering beauty and horror, this monumental achievement from Lav Diaz boldly rewrites the imperialist mythmaking of the Age of Discovery. Elegantly minimalist yet overpowering in its scale and impact, Magellan follows the sixteenth-century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (Gael García Bernal) as he embarks on his epochal quest to cross the Pacific—a voyage that spirals into zealotry and violence when he attempts to impose Christianity upon the people of the Philippines. Abetted by García Bernal’s radically antiheroic portrayal, Diaz composes a stark vision of the brutality at the heart of European conquest and a haunting elegy for a lost precolonial past.
