A bored doctor's wife (Catherine Deneuve) hears of a brothel operating near her home. Struck by a sudden desire, she goes to the brothel and offers her services in the afternoons. She encounters a wide range of characters, eventually running into a friend of her husband...Surreal tale directed by Luis Bunuel. Synopsis Stunningly restored for the 50th anniversary, BELLE DE JOUR is an elegant and erotic masterpiece and undoubtedly Luis Bunuel's most accessible film. Screen icon Catherine Deneuve plays Severine, the glacially beautiful, sexually unfulfilled wife of a surgeon, whose blood runs icy with ennui until she takes a day-job in a brothel. There she meets a charismatic but sinister young gangster (Pierre Clementi) and ignites an obsession that will court peril. Bunuel uses diffused lighting, dark colours, and shadows throughout the film to temper the gravity and emotional impact of each uncomfortable scene. Left to our own imaginative devices, the result is a film that is highly unsettling, perverse, and inevitably tragic. Special Features The Last Script A Story of Perversion or Emancipation? - Interview with Dr Sylvain Mimoun Commentary by Professor Peter W. Evans New Interview with Jean-Claude Carriere New Masterclass with Diego Bunuel and Jean-Claude Carriere New Trailer Includes 6 artcards

An underrated masterpiece and one of the finest Sherlock Holmes films ever made... Considered by many Holmesians to be the best Sherlock Holmes movie ever made, Billy Wilder’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is both an affectionate parody, and a brilliant, melancholy celebration of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. Sherlock Holmes (Robert Stephens) and Dr. Watson (Colin Blakely), are tasked with locating the missing husband of a mysterious woman fished out of the River Thames. The course of their investigation leads them to Scotland and encounters with a group of monks, some dwarfs and even the Loch Ness Monster. Can Holmes and Watson crack the case? Diamond (one of eleven screenplays they wrote together) and starring the late great Christopher Lee as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is one of the most underrated films in Billy Wilder’s filmography, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film for Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.
