After covering a golf tournament in Los Angeles, sportswriter Mike Hagen returns to his New York home with a tan. And with a fashion-designer wife he scarcely knows. Romantic pitfalls surface gleefully in this Vincente Minnelli-directed comedy featuring an Oscar-winning* script and Manhattanites – an ex-flame (Dolores Gray), low-life hustlers(Chuck Connors, Jesse White) and an addled palooka (Mickey Shaughnessy) among them – who rub elbows and funny bones. Lauren Bacall plays the stylish title character. As Hagen, Gregory Peck gamely displays his comedic flair, pratfalling into a chair, slyly mimicking Bacall and coping with indignity as ravioli is served…in his lap.

When Gene Kelly teams with Arthur Freed, Stanley Donen, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, the result is pure movie-musical alchemy: On the Town, Singin' in the Rain and It's Always Fair Weather. Sparkling with wit and exuberant numbers, It's Always Fair Weather centers on three World War II buddies (Kelly, Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd) who vow to reunite for old time's sake in 10 years. They do. And find their friendship has fizzled until a day of tangling with romance, the fight game, the ad biz and a new medium called TV restores their bond. Highlights include the buddies' high-spirited romp that uses trash-can lids as dancing shoes, elegant Cyd Charisse's k.o. of a routine with brokennosed pugilists, and Kelly's joyful, astonishing tap dance on roller skates. Wow!

"I've waited a whole year to grow claws like these. Jungle Red!" One of film's greatest lines belongs to a wronged wife who wins back her man with the aid of an aggressive shade of nail polish. First a hit play, then an all-star 1939 (and later, 2008) movie, The Women resurfaces here as the musical The Opposite Sex, complete with an all-star cast, lines dipped in acid wit, big production numbers and fabulous '50s couture in scintillating CinemaScope . June Allyson portrays the betrayed woman. Joan Collins is the siren who steals her husband. And Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood and Joan Blondell are assorted gal pals (true-blue and envy-green) who convince their demure friend to paint her claws -- then use them.
