Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel’s publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the “killer virus” biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico – and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realizing that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus – codenamed “Andromeda” – before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise’s suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative. Description

Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award® winner Robert Wise, The Andromeda Strain is a compelling account of the earth's first biological crisis. After an errant satellite crashes to earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man. The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art underground laboratory, where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly alien virus before it wreaks worldwide havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, The Andromeda Strain is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel that created national paranoia for its topical relevance to the first moon landing and is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made. For their final film together following The Guns of Navarone (1961), Cape Fear (1962) and Mackenna’s Gold (1969), star Gregory Peck and director J. Lee Thompson team for the high-stakes espionage thriller The Chairman (1969). Securing a game-changing agricultural enzyme formula is the goal for a Nobel Prize-winning professor (Peck) visiting Communist China where, equipped with an implanted transmitter, he will meet scientists and the titular Chairman Mao himself. Also placed inside him: an explosive device to be triggered in case of failure. Written for the screen by Ben Maddow (The Asphalt Jungle) and scored by the peerless Jerry Goldsmith.

Description

Haunted by memories of a recent affair, securities advisor Robert Harrison (The Andromeda Strain's Arthur Hill) feels a growing sense of alienation from his wife Myrna (Last Night’s Charmion King) and their sons Michael (John Kastner) and Guy (Jon Michaelson). As Michael embraces radical politics and Guy becomes dangerously isolated from his peers, Robert remains largely oblivious, distracted by visions of his recent mistress (Point Blank's Sharon Acker) and other infidelities. As confidence in Robert fades, the family spirals out of control, which paves the way for a shocking, perception-shifting discovery. The first Canadian film to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this remarkable feature directorial debut from George Kaczender (In Praise of Older Women, Agency) builds on the experiments of Michelangelo Antonioni and Alain Resnais to deliver an impressively modern, unsentimental look at family dysfunction and midlife malaise. The only original screenplay by celebrated novelist Timothy Findley (The Wars), Don't Let the Angels Fall taps into the existential currents of '60s literary icons John Updike (Rabbit, Run) and John Cheever (The Swimmer) to deliver a haunting, evocative, occasionally psychedelic experience. CIP is proud to present this overlooked Canadian classic in a special edition featuring over two hours of equally assured Kaczender shorts, including the Michael Sarrazin (They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?) delinquent gem, You’re No Good. Bonus Features: 1. Scanned and restored in 2K from the 35mm interpositive 2. Audio commentary featuring actor Jon Michaelson 3. Five short films directed by George Kaczender: Ballerina (1964, 28 min.), Phoebe (1964, 28 min.),You're No Good (1965, 28 min.), Little White Crimes (1966, 28 min.), and The Game (1968, 28 min.) 4. Impressions of Expo 67 (1967, 8 min.) 5. Bonus short: Toys (1967, 8 min.) 6. Booklet featuring a new essay by Sherrill Grace, author of Tiff: A Life of Timothy Findley 7. Reversible cover artwork 8. Paul Newman memorably plays the title role in this box-office hit based on Ross MacDonald’s The Moving Target. The first detective film in Newman’s then 23-film career, Harper revitalized the genre. Newman’s sleuth chews gum fast…and slips out of jams ever faster as he unravels a twisted case of kidnapping and murder. William Goldman’s clever script throws quips and a parade of LA-LA-Land characters Harper’s way. There’s a woman of means (Lauren Bacall), a gun-toting attorney (Arthur Hill), a poolside gigolo (Robert Wagner), a boozy ex-starlet (Shelley Winters), a jazz junkie (Julie Harris), Harper’s estranged wife (Janet Leigh) and the unholy order of the Temple of the Clouds (led by Strother Martin). Each may possess a clue. Or a bullet for Harper.
