House by the River 05/20 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: In Stock
Release: January 14, 2020
Description
Exiled to Republic Pictures, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, Scarlet Street) created House by the River, a shocking and mordant low-budget thriller. Like fellow cinema giants Orson Welles and John Ford, Lang enjoyed a freedom at Republic that allowed him to make a truly unique and personal film. Regarding House by the River, Cahiers du Cinéma declared, “Lang’s main erotic obsession is displayed more clearly than in any of his other films.” Victorian ne’er-do-well Stephen Byrne (Louis Hayward, And Then There Were None) assaults and accidentally murders his wife’s virginal housekeeper. With the reluctant assistance of loyal brother John (Lee Bowman, Bataan), Stephen remorselessly consigns the girl’s corpse to the river. But as John’s affection for Stephen’s wife Marjorie (Jane Wyatt, Pitfall), police suspicion about the girl’s disappearance, and the depths of Stephen’s depravity all escalate, the river itself provokes a horrifying reunion between victim and murderer. Boasting an ingenious script by The Spiral Staircase scribe Mel Dinelli and evocative photography by seven-time Oscar® nominee Edward Cronjager (Heaven Can Wait), House by the River is a criminally underrated American film, both a work of art and a moral nightmare. Special Features: -2K Restoration -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas -Interview with Celebrated Producer and Historian Pierre Rissient -Optional English Subtitles -Dual-Layered BD50 Disc -Trailers

Product Description Academy Award® winner† Denzel Washington, Academy Award® nominee†† Clive Owen and Academy Award® winnerº Jodie Foster star in this intense and explosive crime thriller. The perfect bank robbery quickly spirals into an unstable and deadly game of cat-and-mouse between a criminal mastermind (Owen), a determined detective (Washington), and a power broker with a hidden agenda (Foster). As the minutes tick by and the situation becomes increasingly tense, one wrong move could mean disaster for any one of them. From acclaimed director Spike Lee comes the edge-of-your-seat, action-packed thriller The Wall Street Journal calls “a heist film that’s right on the money.” Amazon.com Spike Lee scored his biggest hit to date with Inside Man, an unconventional thriller with fascinating details in the margins of its convoluted plot. The screenplay (by first-timer Russell Gerwitz) could've used a few more rewrites; it moves at a brisk pace but in hindsight a lot of it doesn't make sense. That makes Inside Man more fun to watch than to think about afterwards (when you discover plot holes big enough to drive a truck through), but it's curiously involving, especially as NYPD Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) struggles to outsmart a high-stakes bank robber (Clive Owen) who, along with a well-trained crew of accomplices, has seized control of a Wall Street bank, turning what initially looks like a hostage crisis into a personal crusade to expose some mysterious evil secrets. As you might expect from the director of Do the Right Thing, Lee seizes several satisfying opportunities to examine post-9/11 issues of racial prejudice and domestic terrorism, and the mysterious "problem solver" Madeline White (Jodie Foster), as eerily sinister as she is vaguely defined, is worthy of her own movie. With the benefit of his most stellar cast to date (including Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe and Chiwetel Ejiofor), Lee seems more interested in character details than well-crafted suspense, but that doesn't stop Inside Man from being engrossing, subtly amusing, and quirky enough to qualify as a welcomed break from the formulaic thrillers that are Hollywood's bread and butter.--Jeff Shannon

The worldwide UHD premiere includes the European & American versions: Uncut, Uncensored & Upgraded THE WORLDWIDE UHD PREMIERE INCLUDES THE EUROPEAN & AMERICAN VERSIONS: UNCUT, UNCENSORED & UPGRADED In 1958, legendary showman Joseph E. Levine unleashed this grisly UK thriller on American moviegoers. But when audiences were horrified by the film's startling violence, graphic nudity and bloody Technicolor climax, it became one of Levine's most infamous failures. Today - in its notorious European version and the re-scored American cut - it remains among the more provocative shockers of its time. Eddie Byrne (THE MUMMY) and Lee Patterson (TV's Surfside 6) star in "one of the most underappreciated films in the Ripper canon" (Daily Grindhouse), produced/directed by Robert S. Baker & Monty Berman (BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE) and written by Hammer Films' legendary Jimmy Sangster (THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HORROR OF DRACULA), both versions now scanned uncut in 4K from a newly discovered internegative and fine grain protection print for the first time ever. The original DV 30 Mbps 29.97fps media was converted to a new ProRes 422 HQ 220 Mbps source at 24 fps for more cinematic motion and for more control and manipulation of the picture during an all new color correction process, with each shot meticulously noise reduced, sharpened, and detail enhanced. If you re a fan of Bixby's it s a must own. --Harry Knowles, Ain't It Cool News The Man From Earth is very much a labor of love from all involved… it's well worth the effort. The recipient of multiple accolades, including Best Film at South Korea's 2001 Grand Bell Awards, JSA - Joint Security Area showcases Park's iconic style in an embryonic form, and demonstrates that humanity and common purpose can be found in the most unlikely places.
