Samurai 7: The Complete Series Disc 3 Blu-ray (Rental)
$6.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: In Stock
Release: February 24, 2009
Description
Product Description Samurai 7 is set in a futuristic world that has just seen the end of a massive war, many villages are being terrorized by Nobuseri bandits. The Nobuseri are no normal bandits. They were once men, but during the war they modifed themselves with machines to become living weapons and now apprear as more machine than man. A group of villagers decide to hire samurai to protect their village. These men of valor are as skilled as they are unique. Amazon.com The broadcast series Samurai 7 (2004) borrows the premise of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954): driven to desperation by bandits who steal their crops, the inhabitants of a small village hire unemployed samurai to defend them. With nothing to offer as wages but their precious rice, the villagers recruit warriors poor enough to accept the dishonor of working for peasants. Samurai 7 moves the story into the future: the bandits and some of the samurai are mecha. The grim ronin Kambei leads the viewers in the defense of their village, then tackles the forces of the orchidaceous emperor Ukyo. Kambei and his mismatched band attack the Capitol, Ukyo's equivalent of the Death Star. The warriors perform gravity-defying leaps, as they slash through steel plating, deflect bullets, and split laser beams with their swords in a climactic battle that occupies most of the last three episodes. The drawn/CG combinations reveal why Samurai 7 cost a reported ¥32,500,000 (nearly $300,000) per episode, an extremely high price by Japanese standards. Widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of world cinema, Kurosawa's Seven Samurai stressed the shared humanity of the peasants, the samurai, and even the bandits; the often grotesque people and mecha in this sci-fi adventure lack that essential bond. Samurai 7 offers plenty of over-the-top battle sequences for viewers who enjoy a mixture of feudal and futuristic daring-do. But its meandering plot, stock heroes, and tin pot villains have very little to do with its supposed model. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon (1. The Master, 2. The Pupil, 3. The Entertainer, 4. The Loner, 5. The Drifter, 6. Description
Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Sam Staziak (Daniel Quinn, Wild At Heart), the Scanner Cop, had hoped that he could resume a normal life. When other Scanners in the Los Angeles area are being attacked, literally left drained of life, Sam is forced back into action in a desperate attempt to stop a mad Scanner named Volkin who is determined to become the most powerful - and ruthless - of his kind. But as Sam sets out to put an end to the ever increasing carnage gripping the city, he also finds himself in a personal crisis after his long estranged mother reappears, and becomes the focus of Volkin's growing rage. Pervasively twisted and astonishingly gory, Steve Barnett's SCANNER COP II: THE SHOWDOWN does everything in its power to up the ante in terms of the Scanners' series violence and creative death sequences, with an array of extremely grisly and often 'explosive' demises courtesy of special effects wizard, John Carl Buechler (Mausoleum). Vinegar Syndrome is overjoyed to bring this unforgettable final chapter in the Scanners saga to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, newly restored from its 35mm original camera negative and featuring a brand new extended making of documentary with it's cast and crew. What does the weight of time’s passage feel like for a family caught in the jaws of a brutal carceral system? Both a breathtaking cinematic love story and a bruising indictment of American injustice, the Academy Award–nominated feature documentary debut of Garrett Bradley traces the decades-long quest of Sibil Fox Richardson, an indefatigable mother of six and a fiercely outspoken prison abolitionist, to free her husband from the Louisiana State Penitentiary, where he is serving a sixty-year sentence for robbery. Gracefully interweaving twenty years’ worth of Richardson’s own intimate home movies with luminously expressive monochrome footage of her present-day joys and struggles, Bradley crafts in Time a transcendentally poetic, soul-shaking look at the devastating toll of mass incarceration and one family’s extraordinary efforts to stay whole. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital master, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack New audio commentary featuring director Garrett Bradley New interview with Time’s subjects, Sibil Fox and Robert Richardson New conversation between Bradley and critic and author Hilton Als Alone (2017), a short documentary by Bradley, with optional 2021 commentary by the film’s subject, Aloné Watts Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing English descriptive audio PLUS: An essay by critic Doreen St. Félix

Release: March 27, 2018
Description
Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Before directing the legendary PENITENTIARY trilogy, Jamaa Fanaka helmed these two offbeat genre films, which helped catapult him to recognition as one of the most important black filmmakers working in 70s independent cinema. In Fanaka's debut feature, WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES, a young black man is sent to prison, after being brutalized by a corrupt racist cop. Upon release, he takes deadly revenge against the cops, lawyers, and thugs who got him busted, using a most unusual weapon... As much a parody of exploitation films as it is a proud piece of genre cinema, BROTHER CHARLES combines horror and blaxploitation tropes with stirring social subtext resulting in a drive-in movie unlike any other. Fanaka's second feature, EMMA MAE, tells the story of a naive young woman who moves from the Deep South to Watts. Initially finding herself at odds with her surroundings, Emma eventually gains acceptance from a local drug addict and dealer. But when he's arrested and jailed, she plans a daring bank robbery to bail him out... Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals and shot entirely on location in Watts, this uniquely subversive action film is an insider's view of black, working-class LA neighborhoods. Vinegar Syndrome brings these two landmark films to Blu-ray, newly restored from their original camera negatives. Bonus Features: 1. Newly scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm original negatives 2. "The History of the L.A. Rebellion & Jamaa Fanaka" - an appreciation by Jan-Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive 3. Post film Q&A with actress Jerri Hayes from a 2017 screening of EMMA MAE at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn, NY 4. Original theatrical trailer 5. Multiple original teaser trailers 6. Reversible cover artwork 7. English SDH subtitles

Welcome II the Terrordome 09/26 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: Short Wait
Release: October 6, 2026
Description
Ngozi Onwurah’s radically ahead-of-its-time dystopian sci-fi film Welcome II the Terrordome—the first theatrically distributed British feature by a Black woman—furiously evokes a near future in which Black people are segregated within a slum called the Terrordome, where simmering violence and anger threaten to boil over in the wake of a young boy’s murder. Named after an incendiary single by Public Enemy, the film uses its rap soundtrack to both comment on and drive its narrative, part of a sensibility in which American, British, and African cultures collide and the past, present, and future collapse. In this prescient work, Onwurah builds a visionary, Afrofuturist cosmology that connects the history of slavery to modern-day systemic racial brutality. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 2K digital restoration, supervised and approved by cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack New audio commentary featuring Küchler, director Ngozi Onwurah, and Criterion curatorial director Ashley Clark Meet the Filmmakers: Ngozi Onwurah, a Criterion Channel original interview Three short films by Onwurah—Coffee Coloured Children (1988), And Still I Rise (1993), and Hang Time (2001)—with a new introduction by the director English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by poet and critic Kadish Morris
