Product Description Already an established filmmaker by the 1976 release of THE MARQUISE OF O, an adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist's classic short story, the film stands as Eric Rohmer's 'dazzling testament to the civilizing effects of several different arts, witty, joyous and so beautiful to look at' (The New York Times). Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year, Rohmer's film is set in 1799 during the Russian invasion of Italy. A young widow, The Marquise (Edith Clever) lives with her parents; her father is the commander of a citadel embroiled in battle. With the fort overrun by Russians, the Marquise is abducted by a group of rowdy soldiers and nearly taken advantage of when the Russian commander Count F (Bruno Ganz) appears as if from nowhere to rescue her. Later, the Marquise realizes she is pregnant, though she cannot decipher how the circumstance came to be. The Marquise's scandalized parents banish her to their country estate, where she pens a letter to the newspaper announcing that she will marry the father, whomever he may be, should he only present himself. Rohmer masterfully adapts von Kleist's multi-layered story, creating 'the aura of a neoclassical dream, a fading vision of the virtue of gentility' (The Chicago Reader). BONUS FEATURES include Collector's booklet with film essay by top film critic and writer, David Thompson, archival Cannes Film Festival interview with leading actor, Bruno Ganz, and interview with director, Eric Rohmer, on the set of a Kleist stage production. Review Winner - Special Jury Prize - Cannes Film Festival Official Selection - Cannes Film Festival Official Selection - New York International Film Festival - --- It's a dazzling testament to the civilizing effects of several different arts, witty, joyous and so beautiful to look at. --The New York Times The film's slow, stately pace and the quiet way in which it makes its points give it the aura of a neoclassical dream, a fading vision of the virtue of gentility. --Chicago Reader

After 24 successful bombing runs, the battle-hardened crew of the B-17 Flying Fortress Memphis Belle has just one more mission to fly before they can return home. That real-life 25th mission -- first chronicled in director William Wyler's 1944 World War II documentary about a critical daylight raid into the heart of Germany -- is spectacularly re-created in this nail-biting 1990 airborne adventure. Producers David Puttnam (Chariots of Fire, The Killing Fields) and Catherine Wyler (William's daughter) have teamed an all-star cast (Matthew Modine; Eric Stoltz; Sean Astin; Harry Connick, Jr.; and John Lithgow) with director Michael Caton-Jones (Rob Roy, The Jackal) to celebrate the extraordinary heroism of ordinary joes at war.

Product Description John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and J.P. Morgan rose from obscurity and in the process built modern America. Their names hang on street signs, are etched into buildings and are a part of the fabric of history. These men created the American Dream and were the engine of capitalism as they transformed everything they touched in building the oil, rail, steel, shipping, automobile and finance industries. Their paths crossed repeatedly as they elected presidents, set economic policies and influenced major events of the 50 most formative years this country has ever known. From the Civil War to the Great Depression and World War I, they led the way. Amazon.com The Men Who Built America were quite a quintet. Cornelius Vanderbilt, who had already made a fortune in ships, saw which way the wind was blowing, invested in railroads, and became the richest man in America. John D. Rockefeller revolutionized the oil business, from refining to delivery, with Standard Oil. Andrew Carnegie was the first great steel magnate. J.P. Morgan controlled the electricity market, consolidated the steel industry after Carnegie, and was "the creator of modern finance," while Henry Ford constructed the automobile assembly line and made cars affordable to everyone. But these were not merely brilliant entrepreneurs, visionaries who had great ideas and the will and wherewithal to see them through to fruition, in the process helping America emerge from the ruins of the Civil War and become the greatest nation on Earth in just a few short decades. The way this History Channel production tells it, with its bluesy theme music, emphasis on dramatically re-created Big Moments, and generally overheated POV (a challenge from a competitor is nothing less than "a declaration of war"), Vanderbilt et al. were outlaws and rock stars, tough, macho men who strode the Earth like colossi, crushing lesser beings with their ingenuity, acumen, and very large piles of money. Indeed, although it has some typical documentary elements (like occasional use of file footage and photos), The Men Who Built America is really more of a docudrama; the characters are all portrayed by actors (none of them household names, except maybe in their own homes) mouthing scripted dialogue; and while there are a few historians, academics, and biographers on hand, most of the people who offer their modern-day insights are celebrity business figures like Donald Trump, Mark Cuban, Steve Wynn, Ted Turner, Charles Schwab, and Carly Fiorina. This is not a bad thing. The style takes some getting used to, but in the end, the eight-episode miniseries is both entertaining and enlightening, providing information about such events as the financial panic of 1873, how the refinement of oil into kerosene brought light into Americans' homes, the role played by Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan in the election of President William McKinley in 1896, and the efforts of reformers like William Jennings Bryan and Theodore Roosevelt to put an end to the vast monopolies they'd created. --Sam Graham

Product Description Set in 33 A.D. Judea, Brian Cohen, born in Bethlehem in a stable next door, is, by a series of absurd circumstances, caught up in the new religion and reluctantly mistaken for the promised messiah. Amazon.com "Blessed are the cheesemakers," a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python's Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers--it's an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy--things that that fellow from Nazareth didn't particularly care for either. Nevertheless, at the time of its release in 1979, those who hadn't seen it considered it to be quite "controversial." Life of Brian, you see, is about a chap named Brian (Graham Chapman) born December 25 in a hovel not far from a soon-to-be-famous Bethlehem manger. Brian is mistaken for the messiah and therefore manipulated, abused, and exploited by various religious and political factions. And it's really, really funny. Particularly memorable bits include the brassy Shirley Bassey/James Bond-like title song; the bitter rivalry between the anti-Roman resistance groups, the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea; Michael Palin's turn as a lisping, risible Pontius Pilate; Brian urging a throng of false-idol worshippers to think for themselves--to which they reply en masse "Yes, we must think for ourselves!"; the fact that everything Brian does, including losing his sandal in an attempt to flee these wackos, is interpreted as "a sign." Life of Brian is not only one of Monty Python's funniest achievements, it's also the group's sharpest and smartest sustained satire. Blessed are the Pythons. --Jim Emerso
