I love this movie. I loved the cats in this movie and I loved the people in this movie. I loved seeing how cats can live freely when a society accepts them. For too long cats have been treated as nothing more than a nuisance, which as a cat lover infuriates me, but where I love in the U.S. we are actually getting a lot better about it--we live in a community with pretty strict HOA regulations which everyone abides by, with the exception of one thing---feeding feral cats. Where we live was for hundreds of years farm land, when this area was heavily developed starting about 15 years ago all those barn cats found ways to adapt and stick around and as such we have a large population of feral cats all over the whole city. Even the neighbors who don't participate in TNR or even just feeding and watering the cats and who say they do not really like cats will also openly admit they like having them around because they take care of a lot of pests and as such don't have to pay for bug spraying around the perimeters of their homes anymore. So, it is interesting to see minds and behaviors change here in the U.S. In any case, I loved this movie and I loved how they showed the cats in a relatively safe level of outdoor freedom and I loved the people in the movie who respected and admired the cats for that but still showed great concern and care and love for their cat friends.

In "Kalahari," we see an extraordinary array of the greatest mammals on the planet--elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and so on--gathering by day at a watering hole in a place so dry its name translates as "land of great thirst"; at night, meanwhile, a special "starlight camera" captures rhinos engaging in the kind of social behavior never before observed by humans. In "Savannah," we are witness to a scene in which a mother elephant must decide to keep up with the herd or stay behind with her dying baby, a profoundly moving sequence that will melt the hardest heart. In "Cape," we see the "butterfly ball," in which butterflies leave the protection of the rainforest floor and soar above the trees in a gloriously balletic mating ritual. But while the content is well beyond reproach, when it comes to presentation, Africa seems to be trying to modernize the nature doc form, with somewhat mixed results. Some of it is edited more like a movie than a documentary, using music, quick cuts, close-ups, and slo-mo to heighten the drama (one example is an otherwise spectacular battle between two male giraffes that's scored and edited like a Sam Peckinpah western).
