But soon, even this collection of cadavers isn’t company enough for old Ez’, and he decides to turn his attention to fresher subjects… Based on the real-life case of the “Plainfield Ghoul” Ed Gein - the infamous Wisconsin murderer and graverobber whose exploits similarly inspired the likes of Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs - 1974’s DERANGED offers up one of the most faithful cinematic retellings of this true-crime story, with Roberts Blossom (Home Alone) delivering a chilling and highly credible central performance as Ezra Cobb. Co-directed by Jeff Gillen and Alan Ormsby (who also penned Bob Clark’s Deathdream), and with early special effects work from a young Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) - some of which proved so gruesomely effective that they had to be excised to secure the film a theatrical release - Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to disinter the fully unexpurgated version of DERANGED for its world UHD premiere, newly restored in 4K from its original camera negative and loaded with a ghoulish array of new and archival extras. Product Description Fritz Haarmann, aka the Butcher of Hanover and the Vampire of Hanover, was a German serial killer responsible for the murders of two dozen boys and young men during the so-called ‘years of crisis’ between the wars. His case would partly inspire Fritz Lang’s M, and its central character portrayed by Peter Lorre, as well as this forgotten gem from 1973. Tenderness of the Wolves treats the viewer to a few weeks in the company of a killer. Baby-faced and shaven-headed, in a manner that recalls both M and F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, Haarmann is a fascinating, repulsive figure. Using his status as a police informant to procure his victims, he dismembers their bodies after death and sells the flesh to restaurants, dumping the remainder out of sight. This isn’t an easy film to watch, but it certainly gets under the skin… Produced by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (who also supplies a shifty cameo), Tenderness of the Wolves provided two of his regular actors with a means of expanding their careers. Ulli Lommel – later responsible for the infamous video nasty The Boogeyman – made his directorial debut, while Kurt Raab wrote the screenplay as well as delivering an astonishing performance as Haarmann. The magisterial John Huston, working from Leonard Gardner’s screen adaptation of his own novel, gives us in Fat City (1972) the story of two boxers, one an old-timer (Stacy Keach) on his way down, the other (Jeff Bridges), a hopeful striving for the top. Also starring Susan Tyrrell and Candy Clark and stunningly shot by the great Conrad Hall in drab and dusty Stockton, California, this is a kind of dingy poetic masterpiece.

A laugh out loud parody of classic crime dramas and noirs from Double Indemnity and Basic Instinct to Fatal Attraction, director Carl Reiner's (The Jerk)Fatal Instinct has it's tongue planted firmly in cheek. Sultry and seductive Lola Cain (Sean Young, Blade Runner) is having an affair with Ned Ravine (Armande Assante, Unfaithfully Yours), a married policeman and lawyer who often represents those he's arrested. San Francisco architect Max Klein can see clearly now. He's been transformed ever since he stared death in the face - and discovered he was unafraid. Peter Weir (Witness) directs Fearless, the vivid story of how a near-death experience impacts the lives of three people. Jeff Bridges plays Max, more wildly alive and taking more risks than ever since surviving a plane crash. Isabella Rossellini is Laura, struggling to find in Max the man she married. And Rosie Perez, 1993 Academy Award nominee and Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago Film Critics Award winner as Best Supporting Actress, is fellow crash survivor Carla: alive, yet devastated by a grievous loss. It seems that no one can heal her pain. But then she meets the one person who fearlessly knows how.

Description

This collection features three film noir classics: MAN AFRAID (1957) – Noir greats George Nader (Six Bridges to Cross, Appointment with a Shadow) and director Harry Keller (The Unguarded Moment, The Female Animal) come together for Man Afraid, a heart-stopping CinemaScope noir about a preacher ensnared in fear. When Reverend David Collins (Nader) and his wife Lisa (Phyllis Thaxter, Act of Violence) catch a burglar in their son’s room, the ensuing struggle ends with an injury to Lisa’s eyes and David unintentionally killing the thief. The Collins struggle with the resulting publicity, David’s own conscience, Lisa’s temporary blindness...and the burglar’s vengeful father (Eduard Franz, Cyborg 2087) who begins to stalk their son Michael (Tim Hovey, Queen Bee). The tense revenge-noir Man Afraid features a score by the great Henry Mancini (Touch of Evil). THE GIRL IN THE KREMLIN (1957) – Moscow, 1953. Four terrified women prisoners are brought before Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, who picks the beautiful Dasha and proceeds to punish her by shaving off her long, black hair. Moments later, a plastic surgeon leads Stalin into an operating room and transforms his face into something new. So begins the story of the world’s greatest conspiracy: The Girl in the Kremlin, a harrowing Cold War noir starring Lex Barker (The Price of Fear, The Girl in Black Stockings) and Zsa Zsa Gabor (Touch of Evil, Picture Mommy Dead). When Stalin alters his appearance, fakes his own death and vanishes, ex-O.S.S. agent Steve Anderson (Barker) and Lithuanian refugee Lili Grisenko (Gabor) lead the manhunt across Europe. Directed by Russell Birdwell (The Come On) and featuring Maurice Manson (The Creature Walks Among Us) in a chilling performance. THE TATTERED DRESS (1957) – In this CinemaScope film noir from director Jack Arnold (The Incredible Shrinking Man, Man in the Shadow), top lawyer James Blane (Jeff Chandler, Red Ball Express, Female on the Beach) is a man known to do anything it takes to win a case. But when Blane defends a socialite on trial for the murder of a bartender who made a pass at his wife, a scheming sheriff (Jack Carson, The Tarnished Angels) frames Blane for bribing a juror (Gail Russell, Calcutta, Night Has a Thousand Eyes) and exposes the hidden evil simmering beneath the surface of their quiet desert town. The Tattered Dress boasts powerful performances by its never-better cast, which includes Jeanne Crain (Man Without a Star), Elaine Stewart (Night Passage), George Tobias (Rawhide), Edward Andrews (The Unguarded Moment) and Phillip Reed (Klondike Annie). Special Features: • Brand New HD Masters – From a 2K Scan of the 35mm Fine Grains • NEW Audio Commentary for MAN AFRAID by Film Historian David Del Valle and Filmmaker David DeCoteau • NEW Audio Commentary for THE GIRL IN THE KREMLIN by Film Historians Emma Westwood and Paul Anthony Nelson • NEW Audio Commentary for THE TATTERED DRESS by Professor and Film Scholar Jason A. BECAUSE OF YOU (1952) – Loretta Young (The Stranger, The Farmer’s Daughter) and Jeff Chandler (Red Ball Express, Man in the Shadow) star in the noir romance Because of You. Blonde bombshell Christine Carroll (Young) finds out too late that her fiancé Mike Monroe (Alex Nicol, The Sleeping City) is a gangster—and she’s his unwitting accessory. Emerging from prison with dark hair and an interest in nursing, she becomes a nurse’s aide in a war hospital and soon marries a battle-fatigued patient, Steve Kimberly (Chandler). The happy couple have a daughter, Kim, but Christine’s secret past threatens to tear her family apart when Mike reappears, forcing Christine to help him escape across the Mexican border. But first, Johnny must earn the respect of his Treasury-man father (Onslow Stevens, O.S.S.) and the trust of his buddy’s widow (Snowden). Prolific filmmaker Jack Arnold, the director of It Came from Outer Space, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Man in the Shadow, No Name on the Bullet and The Mouse That Roared, helmed this action-packed crime drama that features cinematography by noir specialist Irving Glassberg (Larceny, The Price of Fear).
