The marvelous Irwin Shaw adapted two of his own Paris-set short stories for In the French Style (1963), directed by Robert Parrish (The Wonderful Country) and starring Jean Seberg. Once again, Seberg is the archetypal footloose American girl in the City of Light, engaging in a series of affairs before falling hard for a hard-drinking journalist (Stanley Baker). Beautifully shot by Michel Kelber (French Cancan) and featuring a score by the man who was, for many years, Jean Renoir’s house composer, Joseph Kosma.

Robert Bresson’s masterpiece of cinematic tension, A Man Escaped, follows the harrowing true story of a French Resistance fighter imprisoned by the Gestapo during World War II. Facing a looming death sentence in the supposedly impenetrable Montluc fortress, he relies on unwavering resolve and the repurposing of everyday objects to methodically fashion a way out. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Four more trailblazing classics from the dawn of Québec’s cinematic revolution BETWEEN SWEET AND SALT WATER (Entre la mer et l'eau douce) – Leaving his rural hometown for the trials and tribulations of success in the city, young folksinger Claude (Orders star Claude Gauthier) begins a charged romance with waitress Geneviève (Dead Ringers’ Geneviève Bujold). Legendary filmmaker Michel Brault’s celebrated fiction feature debut transposed the intimacy and immediacy of his vérité work and brought new legitimacy to independent cinema in Québec. WHERE ARE YOU? (Où êtes-vous donc?) – Coming together across an extended road trip to Montréal, Christian, Georges, and Mouffe each forge a unique path in the face of an increasingly consumerist society. Filmmaker Gilles Groulx’s follow-up to The Cat in the Bag is an intoxicating formal kaleidoscope that pushes cinematic language to its limits. GENEVIÈVE – Traveling to Québec City for a winter carnival, teenagers Geneviève (Bujold) and Louise (A Woman in Transit's Louise Marleau) experience the joys and disillusionment of a young love affair with Bernard (Bernard Arcand) in Michel Brault’s first collaboration with Bujold. FABIENNE (Fabienne sans son jules) – Restless with local celebrity and longing for a lead role in a film, free-spirited chanteuse Fabienne (famed Québécois singer Pauline Julien) relentlessly pursues an offscreen Jean-Luc Godard in this early short from Jacques Godbout (YUL 871). Bonus Features: 1. Region Free Blu-ray 2. Scanned and restored in 2K from the 35mm interpositives 3. New Between Sweet and Salt Water audio commentary featuring author/professor André Loiselle 4. New interview with former Cinémathèque québécoise director Robert Daudelin on Where Are You? and the films of Gilles Groulx 5. Geneviève Bujold: Art = Life (2018, 5 min.) – A tribute to Michel Brault starring Bujold 6. Theatrical trailers for Between Sweet and Salt Water, Where Are You?, and the three features from The Other New Wave, Vol. 1 7. Booklet featuring a new essay by author Ralph Elawani and a new interview with Godbout by film programmer Marc Lamothe 8. Description
François Truffaut plays the crime genre like jazz with this freewheeling adaptation of a novel by pulp master David Goodis, a film that infuses noir fatalism with a nervy nouvelle-vague freshness. The tragicomic story follows the adventures of timid dance-hall pianist Charlie (Charles Aznavour), who gets caught up in a whirlwind love affair and is inadvertently drawn into a violent underworld by his gangster brothers. With the film’s dazzling mix of Raoul Coutard’s handheld camera work, a wistful score by Georges Delerue, and playfully jagged editing, Truffaut creates a rueful character study shot through with his signature obsessions: cinema, the elusive nature of creativity, and the sting of romantic regret. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Audio commentary featuring film scholars Peter Brunette and Annette Insdorf Introduction by filmmaker Noah Baumbach Interviews with cinematographer Raoul Coutard, actors Charles Aznavour and Marie Dubois, and François Truffaut collaborator Suzanne Schiffman Archival interviews with Truffaut on the film and the source novel The Music of Georges Delerue, an illustrated audio essay Episode of the Criterion Channel series Observations on Film Art featuring scholar Jeff Smith Dubois’s screen test Trailer Plus: An essay by film critic Kent Jones, an interview with Truffaut, and reflections by the director on Aznavour and Dubois

Description
Burning with stylistic freedom, the first three features by Leos Carax are cinema at its most ecstatically sensorial and deliriously romantic. Built around virtuosic, intensely physical performances from Denis Lavant as three different characters named Alex, these tales of outsiders, criminals, and doomed lovers living on the edge blaze with the whirlwind abandon of youth and the thrilling highs and torturous lows of all-consuming passion. Love letters to the city of Paris, with its streets transformed by cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier into expressive dreamscapes, these three films erupt in moments of anarchic euphoria that fuse sound and image to heart-stopping effect. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural (Boy Meets Girl and Mauvais sang) and 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio (The Lovers on the Bridge) soundtracks Three 4K UHD discs of the films (with The Lovers on the Bridge presented in Dolby Vision HDR) and three Blu-rays with the films and special features It’s Not Me (2024), a self-portrait film by director Leos Carax New interviews with actor Denis Lavant and editor Nelly Quettier New video essay on the cinematography of Jean-Yves Escoffier Meet the Filmmakers: Leos Carax, a Criterion Channel original interview Mr. X: A Vision of Leos Carax (2014), a documentary on Carax’s work Le Pont-Neuf des amants (1991), a documentary on the making of the main set for The Lovers on the Bridge Deleted scene, rushes, screen tests, behind-the-scenes footage, and trailers New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by author Amina Cain BOY MEETS GIRL Made when he was just twenty-three years old, Leos Carax’s rapturous debut feature returns French cinema to the unfettered experimentation of the New Wave while updating it for the punk 1980s. In velvety black and white, Boy Meets Girl evokes a surreal nocturnal Paris populated by lost souls and wandering misfits, including Alex (Denis Lavant), a disaffected would-be filmmaker whose girlfriend has just left him for his best friend, and Mireille (Mireille Perrier), an aspiring actress nursing her own heartbreak. Drawn together by fate, they share a moment of intense, fleeting connection as bright-burning and ephemeral as youth itself. MAUVAIS SANG With his exhilarating second feature, Leos Carax infuses a neonoir scenario with a delirious strain of doomed romanticism for a tour de force of avant-pop invention. Amid the spread of STBO—a sexually transmitted disease acquired by having sex without emotion—a young ex-con (Denis Lavant) is recruited by a veteran criminal (Michel Piccoli) to steal the antidote, only to find himself entangled in a dangerous affair with his new associate’s lover (Juliette Binoche). Constructed with the kinetic verve of a musical, Mauvais sang explodes in moments of pure cinematic adrenaline, from a dizzying skydive to Lavant’s heart-pounding nighttime sprint set to David Bowie’s “Modern Love.” THE LOVERS ON THE BRIDGE With this feverish saga of amour fou, Leos Carax pushed his ambitions to glorious new heights. Michèle (Juliette Binoche), an artist who is losing her sight, meets Alex (Denis Lavant), a homeless street performer, while sleeping rough on Paris’s centuries-old Pont-Neuf, beginning an obsessive affair that soon collides with crushing reality. The result of an infamously lengthy, arduous production, The Lovers on the Bridge is a bracing plunge into life on the city’s turbulent margins—a visually arresting, musically intoxicating film that is never more dazzling than when the lovers water-ski madly across the Seine amid a shower of fireworks. After a bloody holdup attempt at a railroad depot, a notorious gang of outlaws rides south to Mexico pursued by bounty hunters. The outlaws are led by Pike Bishop, a tough man weighed down by age, regret and the knowledge that his way of life is over. The bounty hunters are led by Deke Thornton, Pike’s former partner, who has been bailed out of jail by the railroad on condition that he bring back Pike, dead or alive. Thornton would rather join Pike, but he gave his word. In Mexico, Pike’s gang takes a job stealing weapons to supply a Mexican war lord, but is this really the kind of work they want to do?
