Flicker Alley and San Francisco Film Preserve proudly announce the release of Focus on Louise Brooks, a Blu-ray Disc compilation of the iconic star’s early performances, including her debut in Herbert Brenon's The Street of Forgotten Men. This 1925 melodrama has been fully restored and is being made available for the very first time, joined by extant materials from three additional early Brooks features: The American Venus (1926), Just Another Blonde (1926), and Now We’re in the Air (1927). The Street of Forgotten Men stars Mary Brian as Mary Vanhern, a woman who successfully escapes her difficult upbringing on the streets of New York’s Bowery district only to have her past return to threaten her future happiness. Although only onscreen for a brief, uncredited scene, one need only glimpse Brooks to be reminded of the charisma that immediately makes her a screen icon. Restored from a 35mm nitrate negative preserved at the Library of Congress, the film’s missing second reel has been reconstructed using film stills as well as text and dialogue based on a copy of the original script, preserved by the New York Public Library. It features a musical score by Stephen Horne. Although most of Paramount Pictures’ beauty contest comedy The American Venus no longer survives, all extant material (including trailers, test footage, and a Technicolor fragment) have been gathered. Brooks’ first substantial role places her opposite Ford Sterling, Lawrence Gray, real 1925 Miss America Fay Lanphier and, in one of his earlier performances, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Brooks plays against type in director Alfred Santell’s Coney Island rom-com Just Another Blonde, starring as bookish Diana O'Sullivan opposite Dorothy Mackaill in the title role. The surviving footage includes segments from five of the original six reels as well as the film's original trailer. Finally, director Frank R. Strayer’s high flying World War I comedy Now We’re in the Air delivers a double dose of Lulu, setting her as twin sisters Griselle and Grisette opposite hapless aviators played by Wallace Beery and Raymond Hatton. Sadly, only Grisette’s role still exists today in the film’s surviving 22 minute sequence. Focus on Louise Brooks represents the first entry in a new Flicker Fusion series that will explore newly restored films, some lost and/or fragmentary, ripe for rediscovery, and featuring some of early cinema’s biggest names. This deluxe Blu-ray edition is made possible thanks to the generous underwriting and funding from the Sunrise Foundation for Education & the Arts. BONUS MATERIALS INCLUDE: Restoration Demo - A look at the painstaking process that went into preserving the films included in this set Audio Commentaries - Informative audio tracks are included with film scholars Pamela Hutchinson on The Street of Forgotten Men, with author and film historians Thomas Gladysz and Kathy Rose O’Regan on Just Another Blonde, and with Gladysz and Robert Byrne on The American Venus and Now We’re in the Air. THE GREAT BUSTER celebrates the life and career of one of America's most influential and celebrated filmmakers and comedians, Buster Keaton, whose singular style and fertile output during the silent era created his legacy as a true cinematic visionary. Filled with stunningly restored archival Keaton films from the Cohen Film Classics library, THE GREAT BUSTER is directed by Peter Bogdanovich, a filmmaker and cinema historian whose landmark writings and films on such renowned directors as John Ford and Orson Welles have become the standard by which all other studies are measured. Keaton's beginnings on the vaudeville circuit are chronicled in THE GREAT BUSTER, as is the development of his trademark physical comedy and deadpan expression that earned him the lifelong moniker of The Great Stone Face , all of which led to his career-high years as the director, writer, producer and star of his own short films and features. Interspersed throughout are interviews with nearly two-dozen collaborators, filmmakers, performers and friends, including Mel Brooks, Quentin Tarantino, Werner Herzog, Dick van Dyke and Johnny Knoxville, who discuss Keaton's influence on modern comedy and, indeed, cinema itself. The loss of artistic independence and career decline that marked his later years are also covered by Bogdanovich, before he casts a close eye on Keaton's extraordinary output from 1923 to 1929, which yielded 10 remarkable feature films (including 1926's The General and 1928's Steamboat Bill, Jr.) that immortalized him as one of the greatest actor-filmmakers in the history of cinema.

Terror lives in the shadows in a pair of mesmerizingly moody horror milestones conjured from the imagination of Val Lewton, the visionary producer-auteur who turned our fears of the unseen and the unknown into haunting excursions into existential dread. As head of RKO’s B-horror-movie unit during the 1940s, Lewton, working with directors such as Jacques Tourneur and Mark Robson, brought a new sophistication to the genre by wringing chills not from conventional movie monsters but from brooding atmosphere, suggestion, and psychosexual unease. Suffused with ritual, mysticism, and the occult, the poetically hypnotic I Walked with a Zombie and the shockingly subversive The Seventh Victim are still-tantalizing dreams of death that dare to embrace the darkness. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restorations of both films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks One 4K UHD disc of the films and one Blu-ray with the films and special features Audio commentary on I Walked with a Zombie featuring authors Kim Newman and Stephen Jones Audio commentary on The Seventh Victim featuring film historian Steve Haberman Interview with film historian Imogen Sara Smith Audio essays from Adam Roche’s podcast The Secret History of Hollywood featuring stories about the casts, crews, and productions of both films Shadows in the Dark: The Val Lewton Legacy (2005), a documentary featuring Newman; Val E. Lewton, son of producer Val Lewton; filmmakers William Friedkin, Guillermo del Toro, George A. Romero, John Landis, and Robert Wise; actor Sara Karloff; and others Excerpts from “The Origins of the Zombie, from Haiti to the U.S.,” an episode of the PBS series Monstrum, hosted by scholar Emily Zarka Trailers English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: Essays by critics Chris Fujiwara and Lucy Sante I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE Producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur elevated the horror film to new heights of poetic abstraction with this entrancing journey into the realm between life and death. When she takes a job caring for a comatose woman on a Caribbean island, a young nurse (Frances Dee) finds herself plunged into a mysterious world where the ghosts of slavery haunt the present and Vodou priests have the power to summon the living dead. Sugarcane swaying in a moonlit field, the hypnotic beat of ceremonial drums, the relentless pull toward death—the otherworldly atmosphere of this bold reimagining of Jane Eyre is as close as studio-era Hollywood ever came to pure dream-state surrealism. THE SEVENTH VICTIM “Death is good” is how producer Val Lewton summarized the message of his films, a credo that received its most explicit expression in this strikingly nihilistic shocker, the first film directed by regular Lewton editor Mark Robson. Kim Hunter makes her film debut as a young boarding-school student who, in search of her missing sister (proto-goth icon Jean Brooks), travels to New York’s bohemian Greenwich Village, where she uncovers a sinister shadow world of devil-worshippers and murder. And what about that mysterious room furnished with nothing but a chair and a hangman’s noose? With its daring treatment of depression and queerness, The Seventh Victim has haunted the margins of cinema for decades, its radical bleakness undiminished by time.

But trouble begins to break the team apart when Charlie kills a group of Indians whom he accuses of stealing his horses. Charlie’s subsequent mistreatment of the lone survivors – an Indian woman and her child – forces Sandy to realize that his partner is consumed with hate...and that he enjoys killing more than just buffalo. “Raw, real and rugged” (L.A. Theresa Dunn’s mild demeanor and job as an inner-city school teacher for deaf children masks her rebellious nightlife of frequenting dance clubs and dive bars, searching for easy men and one-night stands. At odds with her older sister Katherine, whose seemingly idyllic life is itself a cover for infidelity and heartbreak, Theresa finds joy in her self-styled form of liberation, in part to overcompensate for the trauma of a disfiguring scar from childhood scoliosis and her repressive Catholic upbringing. When two wildly different men, the square but grounded James and fun but unhinged Tony, enter her life, Theresa is forced to confront her demons as never before, forcing her on a path of increased self-destruction. The Terror: Infamy, chronicles a series of bizarre deaths that haunt a Japanese American community.

Description

In the hands of the renowned experimental theater director Peter Brook, William Golding’s legendary novel on the primitivism lurking beneath civilization becomes a film as raw and ragged as the lost boys at its center. Taking an innovative documentary-like approach, Brook shot LORD OF THE FLIES with an off-the-cuff naturalism, seeming to record a spontaneous eruption of its characters’ ids. The result is a rattling masterpiece, as provocative as its source material.

Description

In this hysterical satire of Reagan-era values, written and directed by Albert Brooks, a successful Los Angeles advertising executive (Brooks) and his wife (Julie Hagerty) decide to quit their jobs, buy a Winnebago, and follow their 'Easy Rider' fantasies of freedom and the open road. When a stop in Las Vegas nearly derails their plans, they're forced to come to terms with their own limitations and those of the American dream. Brooks's barbed wit and confident direction drive 'Lost in America', an iconic example of his restless movies about insecure characters searching for satisfaction in the modern world that established his unique comic voice and transformed the art of observational humor. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - New conversation with director Albert Brooks and filmmaker Robert Weide - New interviews with actor Julie Hagerty, executive producer Herb Nanas, and comic writer and director James L. Trying to find true love is difficult, especially if you're not sure what that is. And sometimes breaking up and getting back together feels like a genuine connection. As Robert asks often, "If it's not love, what is it?" Spend some time with this confused couple and see if you can figure it out.

Reeling after his second divorce and struggling with writer’s block, sci-fi novelist John Henderson (Albert Brooks) resolves to figure out where his life went wrong, and hits on an unorthodox solution: moving back in with his relentlessly disapproving, cheerfully passive-aggressive mother (Debbie Reynolds), whose favorite son has always been John’s younger brother, Jeff (Rob Morrow). It’s an experiment that, however harebrained, delivers surprising results. Brooks’s film perfectly blends the writer-director-star’s biting wit with insight and inviting warmth, while giving him a formidable foil in the delightful Reynolds, triumphant in a comeback role that’s equal parts caustic and charming. Description

Consider Mr. Brooks: a successful businessman; a generous philanthropist; a loving father and devoted husband. Seemingly, he's perfect. But Mr. Brooks has a secret - he is an insatiable serial killer, so lethally clever that no one has ever suspected him - until now. Earl Brooks is a man who has managed to keep his two incompatible worlds from intersecting by controlling his cunning, wicked alter ego Marshall. But now, as Mr. Brooks succumbs to one last murderous urge, an amateur photographer witnesses the crime. Suddenly Brooks finds himself entangled in the dark agenda of an opportunistic bystander, as well as hunted by the unorthodox and tenacious detective Tracy Atwood. Can Mr. Brooks outsmart his adversaries and conceal his shocking double life from his wife and daughter - or will someone expose his crimes and his identity once and for all? Kevin Costner as a warped serial killer, a pillar of the community whose dark side is embodied by an on-screen William Hurt? You have to admit, it sounds intriguing, right? Mr. Brooks is the vehicle for this unsavory story, and it turns out to be a lot less kicky than it sounds. Mr. Brooks is a Portland, Oregon tycoon and philanthropist whose "addiction" to murder is suddenly re-surfacing--with plenty of help from his sneering alter ego, who generally sits in the back of the car, goading Mr. Brooks on. (The other characters can't see William Hurt in all this, of course.) The unbelievably convoluted plot has Mr. Brooks confronted by a blackmailer (comedian Dane Cook) who has a surprising twist on things, and trailed by a cop (Demi Moore) who comes equipped with her own set of professional and marital woes. As if that weren't enough, when Brooks's daughter (Danielle Panabaker) comes home, it becomes clear that some traits run in the family. The scenes with Costner and Hurt are the best stuff in the film, even if director Bruce Evans can't figure out how to play fair visualizing their presence to othe

Description

Steven Phillips (Albert Brooks) is the king of Hollywood screenwriting, but his hold on the throne is slipping. When a successful friend (Jeff Bridges) suggests that the services of a bona-fide Muse named Sarah (Sharon Stone) might get his career back on track, Steven's desperate enough to take a leap of faith. Despite the misgivings of his wife, Laura (Andie MacDowell), Steven accepts Sarah's extravagant demands, hoping for a good, strong dose of inspiration. But as Sarah's quirky and endearing ways charm her deeper into their lives, Steven and Laura find themselves changed in ways they never could have guessed. Featuring an original musical score by Elton John and cameos by a host of Hollywood luminaries, including Martin Scorsese, Rob Reiner and James Cameron, The Muse is a wry comedy that pokes hilarious fun at Tinseltown itself.
