Product Description Based on the bestselling novel, a character driven, coming of age story, set in WWII German occupied Netherlands, filled with the adventure, uncertainty and tragedy of war. Amazon.com The gleaming snowy landscape of the Netherlands provides a stark backdrop to a gripping fusion of Nazi occupation and coming-of-age story. Michiel (Martijn Lakemeier), son of the mayor of a town occupied by the German army, gets into mild rebellious trouble--until he discovers a downed British pilot (Jamie Campbell Bower) hidden in the nearby woods. Rather than turn to his father (Raymond Thiry), who tries to placate the Nazis, Michiel seeks help from his uncle Ben (Yorick van Wageningen), who has ties to the Resistance… and in so doing, sets a tragic series of events in motion. Winter in Wartime is a mild title for such a compelling, emotionally powerful movie, packed with several edge-of-your-seat suspense sequences, including one at the end that's downright Hitchcockian. The action is all the more compelling because it's grounded in well-realized characters, a clean and propulsive story, attention to the details of daily life, and outstanding performances from a uniformly strong cast. It's no surprise that Winter in Wartime outgrossed international hits like Twilight and The Dark Knight in its home country. This is a marvelous movie that deserves to be just as popular abroad. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is called upon to help stop the chaotic pandemic that has gripped populations around the world. Lane fights to keep his family safe, while searching for an answer to the outbreak before it destroys all of civilization. Amazon.com Few monsters lend themselves better to allegory than the zombie. In the years since George Romero first set the shambling mold with Night of the Living Dead, filmmakers have been using the undead as handy substitutes for concepts as varied as mall-walking consumers, punk rockers, soccer hooligans, and every political movement imaginable. (All this, plus brain chomping.) World War Z, the mega-scale adaptation of Max Brooks's richly detailed faux-historical novel, presents a zombie apocalypse on a ginormous level never seen before on film. Somehow, however, the sheer size of the scenario, coupled with a distinct lack of visceral explicitness, ends up blunting much of the metaphoric impact. While the globe-hopping action certainly doesn't want for spectacle, viewers may find themselves wishing there was something more to, you know, chew on. Director Marc Forster and his team of screenwriters (including J. Michael Straczynski and Lost's Damon Lindelof) have kept the basic gist of the source material, in which an unexplained outbreak results in a rapidly growing army of the undead. Unlike the novel's sprawling collection of unrelated narrators, however, the film streamlines the plot, following a retired United Nations investigator (Brad Pitt) who must leave his family behind in order to seek out the origins of the outbreak. While the introduction of a central character does help connect some of Brooks's cooler ideas, it also has the curious effect of narrowing the global scale of the crisis. By the time of the third act, in which Pitt finds himself under siege in a confined space, the once epic scope has decelerated into something virtually indistinguishable from any other zombie movie. Even if it's not a genre changer, though, World War Z still has plenty to distinguish itself, including a number of well-orchestrated set pieces--this is a movie that will never be shown on airplanes--and the performances, with Pitt's gradually eroding calm strengthened by a crew of supporting actors (including Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, and a fantastically loony David Morse) who manage to make a large impression in limited time. Most importantly, it's got those tremendous early scenes of zombie apocalypse, which display a level of frenetic chaos that's somehow both over-the-top and eerily plausible. When the fleet-footed ghouls start dogpiling en masse, even the most level-headed viewer may find themselves checking the locks and heading for the basement. --Andrew Wright

I am more than impressed with this new four disc set of WWII in Hi Def from Topics featuring a slew of documentaries culled from the National Archives. While there are a couple of niggling complaints I have no liner notes or insert booklet and packaging which stacks the four discs on a single spindle, as well as a very minor authoring error which will display Disc One as Disc Two and vice versa on your introductory PS3 screen if you use that system they pale when one considers the breadth and depth of material contained herein. Though you wouldn't know by the rather minimal listing on the back of the keepcase insert, this compilation includes several Oscar winners for Best Documentary, at least a couple of notably notorious releases (at least back in their day), and a who's who of (uncredited) Hollywood royalty in front of and behind the camera, people like John Ford, John and Walter Huston, Henry Fonda, Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin and more. As with any compilation which spans this much material and various source elements, WWII in Hi Defs VC-1 encoded 1080p image (in 1.38:1) varies considerably. The good news is the vast majority of these ten features look pretty darned amazing in their hi-def upgrades, as long as you keep in mind many of these were originally shot on either 16mm or 35mm under battle conditions which frequently resulted in early exposure or damage to the actual negative. The Technicolor features included here are a tad on the soft side, though with fairly robust and well saturated color for something of this age. Aside from the short version of December 7 and Nuremberg, the black and white features look very good, with excellent contrast and generally very stable blacks. All of these features sport occasional (and sometimes more than occasional) blemishes, with scratches, dirt, white flecks and other debris dotting the image. But taking the historical import of these features into consideration, as well as their age, the image quality here for the most part is most definitely a pleasant surprise. Two audio options are included on these Blu-rays, a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mix and a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix (strangely the discs default to the Dolby mix--when are distributors going to figure out most Blu-ray consumers want lossless audio and will choose that mix if given the choice?). For the most part all of these features sound good to very good, within the confines of early 1940s recording techniques. A couple of the features have fairly badly damaged audio, including Battle of Midway, which easily fares the worst sound wise among the ten features included here. The short form December 7 also has some audio damage. The rest of the features, while boxy and lacking either extreme highs or lows, feature decent to excellent fidelity, albeit with hiss and the occasional pop and crack. This is an astoundingly fine set from Topics, and kudos to the label and the producers who assembled this excellent collection of documentaries. Anyone with even a passing interest in World War II and the United States filmed history of it should have this set in their collections. Highly recommended. --Jeffrey Kauffman, Bluray.com

Relive an amphibious landing in With the Marines in Tarawa, and see the Oscar-winning documentary, The Battle of Midway, by John Ford and the lost masterpiece, Let There Be Light, hailed as one of the greatest war films ever. Review For those consumers having play back issues please look into updating your firmware. Firmware upgrades can also enable new features and playback capabilities. Most manufacturers are constantly upgrading the firmware for their Blu- ray players in response to customer feedback and to improve performance. Therefore most players need to be updated frequently to stay up to date with these upgrades/changes. --Author/Publisher An amazing collection of documentaries from the U.S. National Archives is featured on this superlative four disc set.

Jean-Louis Chavel (Hopkins), a wealthy French lawyer living quietly under Nazi occupation, is seized in a random police raid and thrown into a Paris jail with 29 other innocent men. As he falls in love with the dead man’s sister, Thérèse (Scott Thomas), a stranger (Jacobi in an Emmy-winning role) calling himself “Chavel” arrives on their doorstep. This collector’s set gathers four groundbreaking and innovative films, ranging from the epic to the intimate, from Algeria (Chronicle of the Years of Fire), Burkina Faso (Yam daabo), India (Kummatty), and Kazakhstan (The Fall of Otrar). Each title is a significant contribution to the art form and a window onto a cinematic tradition that international audiences previously had limited opportunities to experience. THREE-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restorations of all four films, overseen by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna (and with Film Heritage Foundation on Kummatty), with uncompressed monaural soundtracks New introductions to the films by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project founder Martin Scorsese New interviews featuring film scholar and producer Ahmed Bedjaoui (on Chronicle of the Years of Fire); film and African-studies scholar Aboubakar Sanogo (on Yam daabo); and photographer Ramu Aravindan, director G. Aravindan’s son, and film editor and festival programmer Bina Paul (on Kummatty) The Making of “The Fall of Otrar,” a new program featuring interviews with director Ardak Amirkulov, actor Tungyshbai Dzhamankulov, production designer Umirzak Shmanov, and film journalist Gulnara Abikeyeva Updated English subtitle translations PLUS: Essays by critics and scholars Joseph Fahim, Chrystel Oloukoï, Ratik Asokan, and Kent Jones CHRONICLE OF THE YEARS OF FIRE Burning with passion, poetry, and a nation’s fervent spirit of resistance, Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina’s stirring revolutionary epic vividly dramatizes the pivotal decades leading up to Algeria’s War of Independence through the harrowing saga of Ahmed (Yorgo Voyagis), a proud farmer seeking a dignified life, whose experience of brutal oppression and systemic injustice leads him, like so many others, to take a stand against the seemingly indomitable might of French colonialism. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, this awe-inspiring landmark of Arab cinema is an at once personal and expansive vision of a country awakening from despair to build an unbreakable movement of liberation YAM DAABO A family’s quest for self-determination mirrors a nation’s struggle in the sensitively observed feature debut by titan of Burkinabe cinema Idrissa Ouédraogo, who cast an ennobling gaze on ordinary Africans navigating the upheavals of the postcolonial era. Made amid revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara’s push to create a self-reliant Burkina Faso, Yam daabo follows an impoverished family as they leave behind a life in the city reliant on Western aid to start anew in the more verdant countryside, quietly capturing the rhythms of everyday life as well as its devastating tragedies and intimate joys. Featuring music by the legendary Francis Bebey, Yam daabo imbues an elemental human story with profound political weight. KUMMATTY Beautifully photographed amid the lush pastoral landscapes of southern India’s Kerala region, this enchanting child’s-eye fable conjures a folkloric world in which the magical exists side by side with the everyday. When Kummatty, a kind of shamanic bogeyman, arrives in a small village, he captivates the children with his music and colorful masks—until he casts a spell that has unexpected consequences for one boy. Bursting with exuberant songs and children’s chants, this fantasy from G. Aravindan, a pioneer of India’s art-house “parallel cinema” movement, is a treasure of imagination and entrancing visual lyricism. THE FALL OF OTRAR Kazakh New Wave iconoclast Ardak Amirkulov’s hypnotic thirteenth-century epic is a feverish vision of one of history’s most decisive battles—Genghis Khan’s siege of the now-lost city of Otrar—engraved in images of stunning, hallucinatory power. When his warnings about an imminent invasion are taken for insolence, a former Mongol scout (Dokhdurbek Kydyraliyev) must escape imprisonment to stop an escalating diplomatic crisis and avert a clash of civilizations. With a panoramic scope that encompasses intimate palace intrigue and the merciless sweep of battlefield carnage, The Fall of Otrar is a monumental imagining of seismic historical upheaval—and a terrifying, electrifying feast for the senses.

A World War II epic both sweeping and intimate, Yanks is a triumph for director John Schlesinger ( Midnight Cowboy, Sunday Bloody Sunday), and a moving showcase for its splendid ensemble cast led by Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave. A war film without battle scenes, Schlesinger's drama instead focuses on relationships far from the front, examining the romantic entanglements between the stationed U.S. soldiers and the locals in a small town in Northern England in the 1944 period before the Normandy landings. Three very different women find themselves attracted to the American G.I.s at a new military base in town. Gere is Sgt. Matt Dyson, initiating a tentative courtship with a young woman still pining for her fiancée overseas. Redgrave is wealthy socialite Helen, engaged in an affair with a captain (William Devane), while both of them long for their respective spouses far from home. And Sergeant Ruffelo's fling with Mollie (Wendy Morgan) occurs just as the interactions between the Yanks and their British hosts begin to strain under the tension of the war, and uncertainty about what happens to their new romances. A personal passion project for Schlesinger -- who was given free creative reign after the success of Marathon Man (1976) -- Yanks was generally not afforded the attention it deserved upon initial release, and as one of the director's warmest films, it's a gem ripe for rediscovery. Set during the Balkan Wars, The Captive tells the story of Sonia (Blanche Sweet, The Woman in White), a young woman living in Montenegro and left to care for her younger brother Milos (Gerald Ward, The Warrens of Virginia) and the family farm when older brother Marko (Page Peters, Davy Crockett) goes off to battle.
