Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary silent film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn of the century psychiatric patients. Far from a dry dissertation on the topic, the film itself is a witches’ brew of the scary, the gross, and the darkly humorous. Christensen’s mix and match approach to genre anticipates gothic horror, documentary re creation, and the essay film, making for an experience unlike anything else in the history of cinema. BLU RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 2K digital restoration • Music from the original Danish premiere, arranged by film music specialist Gillian Anderson and performed by the Czech Film Orchestra in 2001, presented in 5.0 surround DTS HD Master Audio • Audio commentary from 2001 featuring film scholar Casper Tybjerg • Witchcraft Through the Ages (1968), the seventy six minute version of Häxan, narrated by author William S. Burroughs, with a soundtrack featuring violinist Jean Luc Ponty • Director Benjamin Christensen’s introduction to the 1941 rerelease • Short selection of outtakes • Bibliothèque Diabolique: a photographic exploration of Christensen’s historical sources • PLUS: Essays by critic Chris Fujiwara and scholar Chloé Germaine Buckley, as well as remarks on the score by Anderson

Description
Starring Richard Basehart (Time Limit), Scott Brady (Undertow) and Jack Webb (Appointment with Danger), this film noir classic was the inspiration not only for TV’s Dragnet (also with Webb) but for many other subsequent “ripped-from-the-headlines” crime dramas. Taken from actual case files, He Walked by Night is the suspenseful, action-packed tale of a manhunt for the most cunning criminal in the history of the LAPD. With a combination of ingenuity, state-of-the-art technology, sweat and sheer determination, the police painstakingly track down a brilliant, elusive thief and cop-killer (chillingly played by Basehart in only his third film) who seems to have the ability to vanish into thin air. But can they catch him before he murders again? This gritty, groundbreaking police procedural features direction by Alfred L. Werker (Shock) and an uncredited Anthony Mann (T-Men) with stunning cinematography by John Alton (Raw Deal). Special Features: • Brand New HD Master – From a 16bit 4K Scan of the 35mm Fine Grain • NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Imogen Sara Smith • Audio Commentary by Author/Film Historian Alan K. Rode and Writer/Film Historian Julie Kirgo • Optional English Subtitles

Description
Set in a Turkish-occupied Greek village shortly after World War I, Jules Dassin’s stunning He Who Must Die tells the story of the townspeople’s efforts to stage their Passion Play, an event that occurs once every seven years. The leading citizens choose who will play the parts: a stuttering young shepherd is chosen as Jesus; the town butcher as Judas; the town prostitute as Mary Magdalene. But as the movie unfolds, the Passion becomes a reality, and the villagers actualize their biblical roles against the tragic backdrop of a country uprooted by war and poverty. Adapted from author Nikos Kazantzakis (Zorba the Greek, The Last Temptation of Christ) by the world-renowned Jules Dassin, the director of Rififi, Never on Sunday and Topkapi, this powerful film asks: What would happen if Jesus came down to Earth a second time? The extraordinary international cast includes Melina Mercouri, Pierre Vaneck, Jean Servais, Carl Möhner, Grégoire Aslan, Gert Fröbe, René Lefèvre, Roger Hanin, Nicole Berger, Maurice Ronet and Fernand Ledoux. House by the River 05/20 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray

Release: January 14, 2020
Description
Exiled to Republic Pictures, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, Scarlet Street) created House by the River, a shocking and mordant low-budget thriller. Like fellow cinema giants Orson Welles and John Ford, Lang enjoyed a freedom at Republic that allowed him to make a truly unique and personal film. Regarding House by the River, Cahiers du Cinéma declared, “Lang’s main erotic obsession is displayed more clearly than in any of his other films.” Victorian ne’er-do-well Stephen Byrne (Louis Hayward, And Then There Were None) assaults and accidentally murders his wife’s virginal housekeeper. With the reluctant assistance of loyal brother John (Lee Bowman, Bataan), Stephen remorselessly consigns the girl’s corpse to the river. But as John’s affection for Stephen’s wife Marjorie (Jane Wyatt, Pitfall), police suspicion about the girl’s disappearance, and the depths of Stephen’s depravity all escalate, the river itself provokes a horrifying reunion between victim and murderer. Boasting an ingenious script by The Spiral Staircase scribe Mel Dinelli and evocative photography by seven-time Oscar® nominee Edward Cronjager (Heaven Can Wait), House by the River is a criminally underrated American film, both a work of art and a moral nightmare. Special Features: -2K Restoration -NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas -Interview with Celebrated Producer and Historian Pierre Rissient -Optional English Subtitles -Dual-Layered BD50 Disc -Trailers
