Product Description The film follows two friends, Joan Jett (KRISTEN STEWART) and Cherie Currie (DAKOTA FANNING), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (MICHAEL SHANNON), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family o Amazon.com In adapting Cherie Currie's memoir, Neon Angel, Floria Sigismondi focuses on three figures. Sensing imminent stardom, Sunset Strip impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) brings together blond Bowie fanatic Cherie (Dakota Fanning) with raven-haired rocker Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart). Manufactured bands weren't a novel phenomenon in the 1970s, but the Runaways wrote their own songs and played their own instruments, paving the way for the all-girl outfits to come. With a mother (Tatum O'Neal) in Singapore and a perpetually drunk father, Cherie and her sister, Marie (Riley Keough), must fend for themselves. When the group heads out on tour, there's no adult supervision, leading to drinking and drugging from California to Japan, where the crowds go wild, but just as they're taking off in public, they're falling apart in private. Cherie tires of Fowley's tough-love tactics, while her bandmates resent the focus on their sexpot singer. The best thing about Sigismondi's film is that her risky casting choices pay off: Fanning leaves her little-girl roles behind just as easily as Stewart breaks free from her Twilight shackles, so it's too bad Jett has no back story and that the other players, particularly Sandy West (Stella Maeve) and Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton), don't register more as distinct personalities. Shannon's Fowley, on the other hand, steals the show with his profane performance. For a film dedicated to female empowerment, that may not have been the director's intention, but as Fowley says, "This isn't about women's lib; this is about women's libido." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Childhood takes on near-mythic scale in one of the landmark works of postrevolutionary Iranian cinema. Drawn from director Amir Naderi's own boyhood, The Runner is carried by Madjid Niroumand's vivid performance as a young orphan getting by alone in a port city, resolved to better his lot — taking odd jobs, spending time with friends, teaching himself to read — and running, always running, toward what comes next. Through lyrical images of water, fire and a body in motion, Naderi finds an unexpected grandeur in a boy caught between the modern world and elemental nature as he forges his own way forward.

Over a decade after redefining the thriller with The Third Man, director Carol Reed returned to the genre with The Running Man. Reuniting with that film’s cinematographer Robert Krasker (BAFTA-nominated for his work here), Reed goes in the opposite direction visually, framing the twisty plot in sun-kissed widescreen color. Rex Black (Laurence Harvey, Walk On The Wild Side) has successfully faked his death in a plane crash and escaped to sunny Málaga under a new identity, waiting for his wife Stella (Lee Remick, Anatomy Of A Murder) to arrive with £50,000 of life insurance money. It’s the start of a blissful, trouble-free new life for the couple – until Stephen (Alan Bates, Gosford Park), the insurance agent in charge of investigating Rex’s death, suddenly arrives in town. Is he just holidaying in Spain, as he claims, or is he on assignment to foil Rex’s scheme? Adapted by John Mortimer (later the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey) from the novel The Ballad of the Running Man by Shelley Smith, this underappreciated entry in Reed’s celebrated oeuvre makes its worldwide Blu-ray premiere, complete with insightful new bonus features. Description
The tenth collaboration between co-directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, after a run of comedies, romances, action films and historical epics, Running on Karma is a crime thriller with a strong Buddhist streak, headlined by Hong Kong star Andy Lau. Big (Lau) once lived as a Buddhist monk, but abandoned the religious life because he could not endure his strange gift: he can see people's past lives and foresee how karma will shape their present and future. Now working as a bodybuilder, he is pulled into using his sixth sense for good when he meets Lee Fung-yee (Cecilia Cheung), a police officer hunting a killer. As the pair grow closer and close in on the murderer, their bond is strained by the fact that Big can see Lee's past lives as well. Balancing genre excitement with serious philosophical questions about spirituality and faith, the film ranks alongside Mad Detective among To and Wai's most distinctive works, and the Masters of Cinema series presents it on Blu-ray for the first time outside Asia.

Director David Lean and screenwriter Robert Bolt frame this brooding tale within the expansive beaches, craggy cliffs and heathered hills of Ireland's Dingle Peninsula.

$7.99
Format: Blu-ray

Release: October 13, 2020
Description
The saga of the supposedly unsinkable R.M.S. Titanic has captured the world’s imagination for over a century. Its story of greed, loss and survival remains as fascinating today as it did on that fateful, moonless night in April 1912. Long before James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic (1997), this film meticulously recreated the world’s most lavish luxury liner and its sumptuous gala atmosphere during the four-day journey leading to the disaster. Based on detailed research, this intriguing docudrama gives a rich sense of life aboard the Titanic as it explores the lives of various passengers, ranging from the most impoverished to the wealthiest, and movingly finds the courage amidst the horror and tragedy. The film follows the survivors’ lives after their traumatic rescue. The all-star cast includes David Janssen (Superdome), Cloris Leachman (Scavenger Hunt), Susan Saint James (Love at First Bite), Ian Holm (Juggernaut), Helen Mirren (The Queen), Harry Andrews (The Nightcomers) and David Warner (Morgan!), who also appeared in Cameron’s Titanic more than a decade later. Directed by William Hale (Journey to Shiloh), with a screenplay by three-time Emmy Award winner James Costigan (Love Among the Ruins) and top-notch cinematography by Christopher Challis (The Deep, Evil Under the Sun). This special edition includes both the 4K restoration of the 102-minute theatrical cut and the 144-minute TV cut, newly remastered in HD. Sacrifice, The 03/18 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: In Stock
Release: May 15, 2018
Description
Andrei Tarkovsky’s final masterpiece, The Sacrifice (1986) is a haunting vision of a world threatened with nuclear annihilation. As a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, Cries and Whispers), news of the outbreak of World War III reaches their remote Baltic island — and the happy mood turns to horror. The family descends into a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evoked by Tarkovsky’s arresting palette of luminous grays washing over the bleak landscape around their home. The film’s masterful cinematography is by Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman’s longtime collaborator. Made as he was dying of cancer, The Sacrifice is Tarkovsky’s closing artistic testament, a profoundly moving, redemptive tragedy steeped in unforgettable imagery and heart-wrenching emotion. Special Features: "Booklet with excerpts from Andrei Tarkovsky’s diaries and an essay by film scholar Robert Bird |Disc One: Audio commentary by Layla Alexander-Garrett, Andrei Tarkovksy’s translator on the set of THE SACRIFICE | Trailer | Disc Two: DIRECTED BY ANDREI TARKOVSKY, a documentary on the making of THE SACRIFICE (102 minutes) | Interview with Michał Leszczyłowski, editor of THE SACRIFICE and director of DIRECTED BY ANDREI TARKOVSKY"
