Stands firm in a long legacy of MC flicks. I was slightly disappointed that this picture showcased my favorite quote from “The Wild One” somehow robbing me of all the work I’ve done to discover it.

If there’s a cooler mystical weapon in Cinema than the Glaive let me know. OK well maybe a lightsaber. Anyway this is a beautiful example of a bygone era in movie making. Like “Legend” or “The Dark Crystal” it’s full of magic, mysticism, and creatures of another time and place. David Battley’s Ergon the Magnificent adds a fantastic bit of humor to this adventure.

A very big and whole hearted thanks to Criterion for FINALLY presenting this picture without the absolutely horrible censorship (digital fig leafing) imposed by Warner & the MPAA. The color grading is unique to this release. Hopefully Kubrick would approve. Most noticeable is the hue of blue pouring in the windows of interior night shots.

There was a chapter in Carpenter’s career where it seemed he couldn’t miss. “Christine” was in that chapter. The showroom quality of Chrissy’s restored body never looked better than this 4K. The cold blueish hue chrome, that so glossy it looks dripping wet cherry red, mmmm. Check this out if you are a fan of “The Car”, “Duel”, or ugh “Maximum Overdrive” I guess.

Slightly similar premise to Kazan’s “East of Eden”. Somehow this boy struggling with his father’s disapproval plays better for me. Also as a fun cinema flip flop (spoiler) Brandon De Wilde’s character intensionally leaves the protagonist rather than begging him to stay. I can’t imagine you will find a better home viewing experience of “HUD” than the Criterion 4K.

Give this disc a pass unless you can’t find the movie any other way. Very low quality transfer. The movie itself is a great addition to your Powell experience. Few did romance pictures as well as he.
