Description

In a shabby New York loft, a group of heroin addicts - among them a jazz quartet led by pianist Freddie Redd and featuring alto saxophonist Jackie McLean - waits for Cowboy, their connection, to arrive with drugs. A theater director who has paid to film them turns their waiting into a self-conscious performance for his camera. When Cowboy finally shows up with an unsuspecting young admirer in tow, the evening takes a dangerous turn. Shirley Clarke's landmark of American independent cinema blurs documentary and fiction to capture the rhythms of addiction and the bebop scene.
