Description
Flicker Alley and the Yanai Initiative—a collaborative project of UCLA and Waseda University in Tokyo—proudly present The Art of the Benshi, a limited edition box set that celebrates Japan’s remarkable “film orators.” Talkies famously overtook Hollywood in 1930. In Japan, however, the movies had been speaking all along thanks to live benshi performers who, standing off to the side of the screen, lent their voices to all manner of cinematic works, narrating events as they unfolded and speaking for the characters. Full-fledged artists in their own right, benshi interpreted and enlivened the cinema experience in Japan through expressive performances that illuminated and extended the emotional and thematic range of the works on screen. The art, today, is carried on by a small number of performers, many of whom have honed their abilities through apprenticeships under benshi of the preceding generation, creating a continuous lineage back to the performers of the 1910s, 20s, and 30s. Appearing for the first time on 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc are new 4K restorations of Buntarō Futagawa’s Orochi (1925), Teinosuke Kinugasa’s A Page of Madness (1926), and, starring Baby Peggy (a highly popular star in Japan), Captain January (1924), along with Blu-ray releases of a new restoration of Kenji Mizoguchi’s The Water Magician (1931) (presented in both 20fps and 24fps playback speeds), four additional Baby Peggy shorts: Brownie’s Little Venus (1921), Sweetie (1923), Darling of New York (1923), and Our Pet (1924), as well as a surviving fragment of the samurai tale Blood Spattered at Takadanobaba (1928) by Daisuke Itō. Including 23 audio presentations across nine different titles, The Art of the Benshi features 11 different benshi with newly recorded performances from masters like Sawato Midori (on Orochi, The Water Magician, and Our Pet), Kataoka Ichirō (on Orochi, A Page of Madness, Captain January, and Blood-Spattered Takadanobaba), Sakamoto Raikō (on The Water Magician and Captain January), and Ōmori Kumiko (on The Water Magician, Captain January, Sweetie, and Blood Spattered at Takadanobaba). With multiple benshi performances and historically inspired musical performances on every film, audiences can fully experience the degree to which different performers transform and deepen the moviegoing experience.

Product Description UNCLE MARTIN IS SUFFERING FROM A LITTLE PROBLEM… Get ready for mischief, mayhem and madness with this outrageous comedy starring the truly hysterical Martin Short (Three Amigos, Innerspace) with Charles Grodin (Midnight Run, The Heartbreak Kid), Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard, Time After Time) and Dabney Coleman (9 to 5, WarGames). Clifford is crammed with enough laugh-out-loud moments and brilliantly subtle, sophisticated humor to spoil you for good! Smart, hyperactive and dangerous ten-year-old Clifford (Short) has a lifelong dream: to visit the Dinosaur World theme park. Happily, his uncle Martin (Grodin) has agreed to take him. But when Martin suddenly reneges on his promise, Clifford hatches a devious plan to get even and teach his uncle that all work and no play makes Clifford a very bad boy! Written by William Porter (Back to School) and Steven Kampmann (The Couch Trip); and directed by Paul Flaherty (writer on SCTV, The Tracey Ullman Show, Muppets Tonight + director of Who's Harry Crumb?, 18 Again!). SPECIAL FEATURES: High Definition (1080p) presentation of the main feature in 1.85:1 aspect ratio Audio: DTS-HD 2.0 Stereo English Subtitles Original Theatrical Trailer (HD, 2:23) * Special Features May Not Be Rated, Closed Captioned Or In High Definition. Review Whether he is pretending to be angelic or flashing satanic looks, Short makes Clifford an often riotous comic creation. And Grodin, with his fussy airs, makes a perfect fall guy. --Malcolm Johnson, Hartford Courant There are plenty of laughs here, and Short is clearly having a ball portraying a Damien-like kid... --Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com The kid is obnoxious from start to finish, and the way he fantasizes about his uncle's girlfriend (Mary Steenburgen) is tasteless. --Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune

Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! With the introduction of George "Spanky" McFarland to the troupe in 1932, the "Our Gang" comedies soon embarked on one of the series' most prolific periods of mirth making. Two years later, Hal Roach was inspired to team Spanky with a loyal sidekick: precocious child actor Scotty Beckett, whose delightful comic support of "Spank" premiered in one of Our Gang's funniest and most beloved two-reelers, Hi'-Neighbor! (1934).Spanky and Scotty often functioned as a Greek chorus to the "bigger" kids in classic outings like The First Roundup, Honky-Donkey and For Pete’s Sake (all 1934). They also displayed their broad comic range and chemistry by imitating the antics of Roach's biggest stars, Laurel & Hardy, as in Mike Fright (1934) where Scotty's guileless "Maybe we ain't us" earns him a withering Hardy-like stare from his pal.The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 4 contains the next 12 Our Gang sound shorts produced by Roach in the "talkie era": The Kid from Borneo (1932) to Shrimps for a Day (1934)—with each short newly scanned and restored from original Hal Roach 35mm film elements.A must-have for any true Our Gang fan, Volume 4 features the talents of George "Spanky" McFarland, Dickie Moore, Wally Albright, Bobby "Wheezer" Hutchins, Dorothy DeBorba, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Tommy Bond, Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, and, of course, Scotty Beckett. Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! With the departure of Wally Albright from ""Our Gang"" after the filming of Washee Ironee in late 1934, producer Hal Roach temporarily shifted the focus of the series back to George ""Spanky"" McFarland as he had done a year before when Dickie Moore left the ""Lot of Fun"". That all changed with the talent show-themed short Beginner’s Luck (1935) where one competitor wouldn’t win first prize... but he would soon win fame as one of the most popular ""Little Rascals"" performers in the franchise's history. The youngster making his Our Gang debut in Luck was none other than seven-year-old Carl ""Alfalfa"" Switzer, whose comical countenance—including a lard-assisted cowlick, a face smothered in freckles and a singing voice that was the dictionary definition of ""off-key""—was put to use for maximum mirthmaking in such classics as Teacher’s Beau (1935), Sprucin' Up (1935) and The Pinch Singer (1936). Alfalfa's unpleasant warbling was also a highlight of Our Gang Follies of 1936 (1935), the sho...

The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 6 Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like watching these iconic shorts for the first time! By 1935, the writing was on the wall for the staple at Hal Roach Studios: two-reel comedies. While his short films were still popular with the public, Roach's filmic output was losing ground financially to double features, necessitating that his stars either transition to feature films (like Laurel & Hardy) or find employment elsewhere. An exception was made for Our Gang as the producer continued to make one-reelers featuring the kiddie troupe with the focus on five members: Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Buckwheat and Porky. With the length of the shorts cut in half (Our Gang Follies of 1938 [1937] being an exception), the finished streamlined product was both cost-effective and profitable. The change didn't seem to hurt the franchise either as the first one-reeler, Bored of Education (1936), won the Academy Award for Best (One-Reel) Short Subject the following year. In 1938, after two additional years of cranking out classic comedies, Roach would sell the property to MGM where the series continued until 1944. The Little Rascals - The ClassicFlix Restorations, Volume 6 contains the final 23 Our Gang sound shorts produced by the Hal Roach Studios: Bored of Education (1936) to Hide and Shriek (1938)—with each short newly scanned and restored from the original Hal Roach 35mm film elements. A must-have for any true Our Gang fan, Volume 6 features the talents of George "Spanky" McFarland, Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, Darla Hood, Eugene "Porky" Lee, Tommy "Butch" Bond and Sidney "Woim" Kilbrick. There are also special appearances from former members Mickey Daniels, Mary Kornman, Joe Cobb and Matthew "Stymie" Beard! From writer/director Lawrence Kashan, the creator of Body Heat, The Big Chill, Silverado, The Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon. When a wanna-be psychologist, curiously named Mumford (Loren Dean, Space Cowboys) comes to the idyllic town of the same name, he offers his talent for listening and a disarming frankness as the town’s quirkiest citizens scramble for a seat on his couch. As he lightens hearts darkened by old secrets—including those of the beautiful and troubled Sofia Crisp (Hope Davis, About Schmidt)—no one realizes he’s hiding a whopper of his own, or that he’s fallen head over heels for one of his patients. Filled with personality disorders, surprises, offbeat alliances and some hilarious fantasies, Mumford is just what the laugh doctor ordered. The wonderful cast includes Jason Lee (Chasing Amy), Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves), David Paymer (Get Shorty), Martin Short (¡Three Amigos! ), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Wild at Heart), Alfred Woodard (Cross Creek), Jane Adams (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Priscilla Barnes (TV’s Three’s Company), Ted Danson (TV’s Cheers), Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s The Handmaid’s Tale), Robert Stack (Airplane! ) and Kevin Tighes (Road House). Product Description Disney and Pixar present an incredible new collection of 12 short films, featuring multiple Academy Award(R) nominees (Best Short Film, Animated: "Presto," 2008; "Day & Night," 2010; "La Luna," 2011) and a host of family favorites. Join the celebration of imagination with this must-own collection, packed with unforgettable animation, fantastic stories and captivating characters. Plus, enjoy all-new extras that share how Pixar's storied talent got their start -- including student films from acclaimed directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter! Amazon.com The artists at the Pixar Studio used their early short films the way Walt Disney's artists used the "Silly Symphonies": to explore the medium of animation and to hone their skills in preparation for their first features, Toy Story and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, respectively. Today, Pixar is the most successful animation studio in the world and they continue to test ideas, techniques, technologies, and artists in short films. "Day & Night," Teddy Newton's clever study of two characters who look alike but act differently, and "Presto," Doug Sweetland's slapstick duel between a fussy magician and his recalcitrant rabbit, recall the great Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons of the '40s and '50s. In contrast, a gentle nostalgia pervades Enrico Casarosa's charming "La Luna," the story of a small boy finding his own way of performing a magical job. All three films earned Oscar nominations. Other shorts bring back characters the artists still enjoy animating: Remy from Ratatouille, Dug from Up, Mater from Cars, and the whole Toy Story gang. The tone and the look of the films vary widely, but they all exhibit a palpable delight in the art of animation and a desire to push the medium in new directions. The bonus features include student films by Oscar-winning directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter. It's fun to look for the roots of the great Pixar films in these early works: the turquoise and purple monster in Stanton's "A Story" looks a bit like Sully in Monsters, Inc.; the little boy's room in Lasseter's "Nitemare" anticipates Andy's room in Toy Story. This delightful collection is an all-too-rare family entertainment that an entire family can actually enjoy together. (Rated G: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon (Your Friend the Rat, Presto, Burn-E, Partly Cloudy, Dug's Special Mission, George & A. J., Day & Night, Hawaiian Vacation, Air Mater, Small Fry, Time Travel Mater, La Luna)

No films better represent the 1970s midnight movie phenomenon as Reefer Madness and Sex Madness: two finger-wagging camp classics that hysterically warned the public of the horrors of marijuana and syphilis. But the more we discover about the exploitation genre, the more we learn the true hep cats were the ones who made the films: ruthless opportunists who produced raunchy, ribald melodramas loaded with sex, drugs, and violence, and enabled them to be shown by wrapping them in a tissue-thin pseudoeducational message. These two essential cult favorites are presented in definitive editions, meticulously restored from 35mm elements. Special Features: -Audio commentary for Reefer Madness by Eric Schaefer, author of Bold! Daring! Shocking True! This compilation of five early short films by Martin Scorsese offers a fascinating window onto his artistic development. Spanning the years from Scorsese’s time at NYU in the mid-1960s to the late ’70s, when he was emerging as one of the era’s most electrifying talents, Scorsese Shorts centers on the intimate home movie Italianamerican—a loving snapshot of the director’s parents—and American Boy, a freewheeling portrait of a larger-than-life raconteur. Also included are The Big Shave, a daringly visceral response to America’s involvement in Vietnam, and the bracing student films What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? and It’s Not Just You, Murray! Touching on many of Scorsese’s key themes—Italian American identity, family, his beloved New York City—these are hilarious, candid, and illuminating works from the preeminent American filmmaker of our time. While investigating his girlfriend's vanishing, a journalist's own body is discovered. Only, he's not really dead and his mind is reeling-I am alive! From the fringes of the giallo genre, writer and director Aldo Lado (WHO SAW HER DIE?, NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS) delivers a debut movie that pushes the boundaries of convention with "an ending that is one of the best, truly shocking giallo finales ever put on film." (Geoffrey Thomas, Collider) American foreign correspondent Gregory Moore (Jean Sorel) is on his final assignment in Prague before transitioning to London. He plans to bring his beautiful Czech girlfriend Myra (Barbara Bach) with him, freeing her from the shackles of oppressive Iron Curtain politics. But their plans are suddenly derailed when Myra vanishes without a trace. His investigation into her disappearance makes him realize that decadence, superstition, and hunger for power run deep in the City of a Hundred Spires. And then his own body turns up in a park... With no sign of life or rigor mortis, doctors prepare to perform an autopsy to discover the cause of his mysterious and symptomless death. What they don't know is that in his mind, Greg is frantic. Silently screaming. "I am alive!" Newly restored and presented in 4K ultra-high resolution for the first time, "Short Night of Glass Dolls" is "easily one of the most intelligent and stylish gialli" (Shaun Anderson, The Celluloid Highway). The film will surprise you with its remarkable narrative, distinctive photography, and stellar cast that also includes Ingrid Thulin (THE SILENCE, WILD STRAWBERRIES) and Mario Adorf (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS).
