The Group is an ensemble film directed by the great Sidney Lumet (Network, The Verdict, Dog Day Afternoon), based on the novel by Mary McCarthy (The Company She Keeps) and adapted for the screen by legendary screenwriter Sidney Buchman (Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), about a group of eight young women—all classmates, friends, and recent graduates from a certain single-sex liberal arts college—as they face the inevitable pressures to sand the rough edges off their personalities and to surrender their independence to the men in their lives and the institutions they represent. The stellar cast includes Candice Bergen (Rich and Famous) in her film debut, Joan Hackett (Support Your Local Sheriff), Elizabeth Hartman (A Patch of Blue), Shirley Knight (The Rain People), Jessica Walter (Play Misty for Me), Joanna Pettet (Casino Royale), Kathleen Widdoes (TV’s As the World Turns), Larry Hagman (TV’s Dallas), Hal Holbrook (Magnum Force), Richard Mulligan (Scavenger Hunt), and James Congdon (4D Man). Award-winning cinematographer Boris Kaufman (On the Waterfront) lends this tale his peculiar sense of lighting with rich, captivating colors. Special Features: - KLSC Trailers

Description

Unsure of herself, months pregnant and feeling trapped, Natalie Ravenna leaves her sleeping husband a note and drives away from her Long Island home one rainy morning to find herself. Natalie is the heroine of Francis Ford Coppola's intensely moving drama, The Rain People. Ahead of its time from both its filmmaking and feminist points of view, the film took Coppola and his eight-vehicle crew through eighteen states, lending this poignant tale a realistic, rootless tone. On board were three actors who brought a searing truth to the project: Shirley Knight as Natalie, and future stars of The Godfather James Caan and Robert Duvall as the lonely men who bring tenderness and tragedy Natalie's way. What they and Coppola brought our way is a movie that remains powerful, touching and relevant decades after its production.

Handsome Chance Wayne never found the Hollywood stardom he craved, but he's always been a star with the ladies. Now, back in his sleepy, sweaty Gulf Coast hometown, he's involved with two of them: a washed-up, drug-and-vodka-addled movie queen and the girl he left behind and in trouble. Paul Newman, Best Actress Oscar nominee Geraldine Page, Rip Torn and Madeleine Sherwood re-create their stage roles, and Ed Begley gives an Oscar -winning* portrayal as the town's corrupt political boss in a bravura film version of Tennessee Williams' Broadway hit. Sex. Money. Hypocrisy. Financial and emotional blackmail. Familiar elements of Williams' literary realm combine powerfully as Chance battles his private demons in a desperate bid to redeem his wasted life and recapture his lost sweet bird of youth.
