Description

After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced action icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, master director Lau Kar-leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) retooled his latest martial arts epic, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to the fallen star. Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as the family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, deeply traumatized; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies, however, the warrior-turned-monk realizes he must renounce his peaceful ideals in order to mount a rescue mission and avenge his family. Like the Royal Theater in The Last Picture Show and the title movie house in Cinema Paradiso, the Fu-Ho is shutting down for good. The Fu-Ho’s valedictory screening is King Hu’s 1967 wuxia epic Dragon Inn, playing to a motley smattering of spectators. The standard grievances persist: patrons snack noisily and remove their shoes, treating this temple of cinema like their living room. The sense that moviegoing as a communal experience is slipping away takes on a powerful and painful resonance. Yet Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn is too multifaceted to collapse into a simple valentine to the age of pre-VOD cinephilia. A minimalist where King Hu was a maximalist, preferring long, static shots and sparse use of dialogue, Tsai rises to the narrative challenges he sets for himself and offers the slyest, most delicate of character arcs (the manager, a woman with an iron brace on her leg, embarks on a torturous odyssey to deliver food to the projectionist, played by Lee Kang-sheng). Set during China's Era of Warring States (roughly 475-221 BC), the story centers on Chan as a farmer-turned-soldier who survives a bloody battle with a valuable prize--a wounded general (Wang Leehom) from the opposing army. The personality clash between the savvy, scrappy Chan and Wang's initially aloof warrior makes for some amusing comic moments before the pair are forced to bond in order to save each other's lives; what follows is a traditional buddy/road comedy, enlivened by the chemistry between the leads and a handful of fight sequences that show Chan still nimble and physically adept after three decades of martial arts movies, most notably in a sequence where Chan brawls while using only one leg. Director Ding Sheng's eye for period detail and grime is also a plus, but the key appeal to Little Big Soldier is seeing an invigorated Chan in his classic underdog role and clearly enjoying the opportunity to bring this long-gestating personal project to life.
