In the Mississippi Delta of the 1940s, two farming families—one of white landholders, one of Black tenant farmers—are bound by the unforgiving soil they share as they struggle to survive amid the upheavals of World War II and the poisonous hatred of the Jim Crow South. Each family sends a young man off to battle; when they return home, scarred, and find a common bond, the community is ripped apart. Writer-director Dee Rees, with cowriter Virgil Williams, crafts a uniquely American tragedy, imbuing bitter historical realities with a timeless weight. Featuring bone-deep performances from Rees’s ensemble cast—including Carey Mulligan, Mary J. Blige, Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Clarke, and Jonathan Banks—and backed by Rachel Morrison’s darkly burnished cinematography, Mudbound is a searing humanist study of inheritance, based upon Hillary Jordan’s novel. The path to living as one’s authentic self is paved with trials and tribulations in this revelatory, assured feature debut by Dee Rees—the all-too-rare coming-of-age tale to honestly represent the experiences of queer Black women. Grounded in the fine-grained specificity and deft characterizations of Rees’s script and built around a beautifully layered performance from Adepero Oduye, Pariah follows Brooklyn teenager Alike, who is dealing with the emotional minefields of both first love and heartache and the disapproval of her family as she navigates the expression of her gender and sexual identities within a system that does not make space for them. Achieving an aching intimacy with its subject through the expressive cinematography of Bradford Young, this deeply felt portrait finds strength in vulnerability and liberation in letting go. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • 2K digital transfer, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • New conversation between director Dee Rees and filmmaker and scholar Michelle Parkerson • New cast reunion featuring Rees, Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Kim Wayans, Charles Parnell, and Aasha Davis, moderated by scholar Jacqueline Stewart • New program on the making of the film, featuring Rees, cinematographer Bradford Young, production designer Inbal Weinberg, producer Nekisa Cooper, and editor Mako Kamitsuna, moderated by Stewart • New interview with film scholar Kara Keeling, author of Queer Times, Black Futures • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Cassie da Costa

When mobsters kill the owner of the exotic Club Haiti (Larry Don Johnson), girlfriend Diana “Sugar” Hill (Marki Bey) calls upon a voodoo priestess Mama Maitresse (Zara Cully) to enact justice. Together, they summon lord of the underworld Baron Samedi (Don Pedro Colley) who resurrects from the bayou a squad of silver-eyed, cobwebbed zombies to perform Diana’s bidding. Released by American International Pictures in the hopes of repeating the success of Blacula (1972), Sugar Hill (1974) has overshadowed its blaxploitation horror predecessor and become a grindhouse classic. Sporting a low-cut white jumpsuit and crowned with an iconic afro, Marki Bey’s Sugar is an unforgettable figure of revengeamatic cinema, growing increasingly diabolical and bloodthirsty as she carries out her elaborate and uncompromising vengeance. Berger, Steve Mitchell, and Nathaniel Thompson • Audio commentary by director Paul Maslansky • Interviews with Actors Don Pedro Colley, Richard Lawson, Charles Robinson, and Director Paul Maslansky • Theatrical Trailer • Radio Spots

In his one-of-a-kind fiction/documentary hybrid Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One, the pioneering William Greaves presides over a beleaguered film crew in New York’s Central Park, leaving them to try to figure out what kind of movie they’re making. A couple enacts a breakup scenario over and over, a documentary crew films a crew filming the crew, locals wander casually into the frame: the project defies easy description. Yet this wildly innovative sixties counterculture landmark remains one of the most tightly focused and insightful movies ever made about making movies, expanded thirty-five years later by its unconventional follow-up, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take 2½. The “sequel” sees Take One actors Audrey Henningham and Shannon Baker reunited in a more personal, metatheatrical exploration of the effects of the passage of time on technology, the artistic process, and relationships—real and fabricated. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • High-definition digital transfers of both films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks • Discovering William Greaves, a 2006 documentary on Greaves’s career, featuring Greaves, his wife and coproducer Louise Archambault, actor Ruby Dee, filmmaker St. Clair Bourne, and film scholar Scott MacDonald • Interview from 2006 with actor Steve Buscemi • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Amy Taubin and production notes by Greaves for Take One
