Description

Ken Russell’s first Hollywood film, adapted by Paddy Chayefsky from his own novel, is the definitive head trip of its era — part drug-fuelled freak-out, part creature feature, part love story, played at full intensity throughout. Researcher Eddie Jessup (William Hurt) makes himself the subject of his own mind-expanding experiments, and they carry him on an ever more perilous, substance-driven journey from humanity’s prehistoric origins to the far edges of consciousness. Russell renders it all as a psychedelic explosion of imagery running from the pagan to the cosmic, building to a climactic struggle between the intellect and the heart.

Nothing in David Cronenberg’s quietly provocative film — among his most acclaimed — is quite what it first appears to be. Viggo Mortensen, in the first of his many films with the director, gives a finely shaded performance as Tom Stall, a small-town husband and father celebrated as a hero after he kills two men attempting a violent robbery. But how did an ordinary family man handle them so expertly? With a superb supporting cast including Maria Bello, Ed Harris and William Hurt, Cronenberg subtly dismantles the myth of the American action hero, raising basic questions about identity, human nature, and the violence we condemn yet cannot stop watching.

Disc 1 contains Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) in 4K UHD (the Criterion combo's Blu-ray, carrying the film and the special features including The Missing Pieces, is Disc 2). Everyone in Twin Peaks has something to hide, but no one's secrets run deeper than Laura Palmer's. In this prequel to his groundbreaking 1990s television series, David Lynch brings back the teenager found wrapped in plastic at the start of the show, tracing the last week of her life and the mysteries surrounding her murder. A homecoming queen by day and a drug-addicted thrill seeker by night, Laura leads a double life that drags her ever deeper into horror as she closes in on the identity of the assailant who has been terrorizing her for years. For all its nightmarish vision of an innocent destroyed by forces beyond comprehension, the film remains one of Lynch's most humane, aching with compassion for its tortured heroine, a character as enthralling in life as she was in death.
