In a post-apocalyptic world, where water and gasoline have long since dried-up, a Prince (Jeffrey Wahlberg) from the Oasis (one of the last known safe-havens) must venture out to find medicine for the ailing Queen (Liu), but along the way he gets mixed up with The Warlord (Franco) and his robot Ash, which leads to a daring journey through the desolate Wastelands.

*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Impatient with low-level police work, rookie cop Chui (Eddie Chen) recklessly accepts his superior’s offer to go undercover. With few ties and an ambiguous moral compass that soon starts to spin out of control, his life outside the underworld begins to crumble. Following the success of Cops and Robbers (1979), Alex Cheung’s MAN ON THE BRINK further redefined the Hong Kong crime sub-genre. While indebted to New Hollywood staples such as Sidney Lumet’s Serpico (1973), this Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor Golden Horse Award winner unleashed a new appetite for undercover cop mayhem, prefiguring classics such as the Infernal Affairs trilogy (2002-2003) with its jaw-dropping synthesis of urban grit, realistic drama, and high stakes, captured with evocative hand-held, on-location camerawork. A missing link – if not a turning point – in Hong Kong action cinema, ready to be rediscovered. Bonus Features: 1. Interview with director Alex Cheung (2022, 39 minutes) 2. Commentary with Director Alex Cheung and Assistant Director Teddy Chan (2022, 100 minutes) 3. Q&A Post Screening Talk (2019, 72 minutes) 4. 8mm Shorts: Man on the Brink Making Of (1981, 14 minutes); C.I.D. Making Of (1976, 1 minute); Young Teddy & Alex Cheung (1973,1 minute); "Come Together" Music Video (1973, 3 minutes) 5. Booklet with new writing by John Charles and archival photos

Cantopop superstars Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung display the androgynous magnetism that made them icons as doomed lovers in this emblematic film of Hong Kong’s Second New Wave, directed by pioneering queer melodrama master Stanley Kwan. Rouge bridges past and present in its tragic romance between a humble courtesan and the wayward scion of a wealthy family, who embrace death by suicide pact amid the opulent teahouses of 1930s Hong Kong. Fifty years later, she returns to the city-state to find him, drawing a young contemporary couple (Alex Man and Emily Chu) into her quest to rekindle a passion that may be as illusory as time itself. With its lush mise-en-scène and transcendently melancholy mood, this sensuous ghost story is an exquisite, enduringly resonant elegy for both lost love and vanishing history. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, approved by director Stanley Kwan, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS-HD Master Audio New conversation between Kwan and filmmaker Sasha Chuk Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema, a 1997 documentary by Kwan exploring the representation of queerness and LGBT identity in Chinese film Still Love You After All These, a 1997 memoir film by Kwan about his Hong Kong identity Trailer New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film programmer and critic Dennis Lim Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Rouge (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
