Description

Following the closing arguments in a murder trial, the twelve members of the jury must deliberate, with a guilty verdict meaning death for the accused, an inner-city teen. As the dozen men try to reach a unanimous decision while sequestered in a solitary, sweltering room, one juror (Henry Fonda, The Ox-Bow Incident) casts considerable doubt on elements of the case. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide one boy’s fate. In addition to Fonda (who also co-produced with writer Reginald Rose), the cast includes Lee J. Cobb as his main opposition; Ed Begley as a hateful bigot; E.G. Marshall as a cold, logical stockbroker; Jack Warden as a baseball fanatic and Jack Klugman as the disturbed blood-brother to the defendant. The feature directing debut of Sidney Lumet (Serpico, The Verdict), 12 Angry Men remains “one of the best pictures ever made” (The Hollywood Reporter), a searing examination of race, justice, family and morality. Special Features: DISC 1 (4K UHD): • Brand New HDR/Dolby Vision Master – From a New 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative • NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani • Audio Commentary by Film Historian Drew Casper • Triple-Layered UHD100 Disc • Optional English Subtitles DISC 2 (Blu-ray): • 12 ANGRY MEN – 1997 Film Directed by William Friedkin and Starring Jack Lemmon • BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT: Making of 12 Angry Men • INSIDE THE JURY ROOM: Featurette • Theatrical Trailer • Dual-Layered BD50 Disc • Optional English Subtitles

The third ring offers a whimsical glimpse into the future -- or at least a future from the POV of the mid-20th century -- with a plethora of zany postwar inventions. While none of the cartoons "of tomorrow" foresaw smartphones or DVD players, these far-fetched contraptions, gadgets, houses and farms, televisions, and various modes of transportation could only come from the madcap mind of Avery and his M-G-M crew. Uncut, restored and remastered in High Definition for the first time, Tex Avery Screwball Classics Collection Volume 2 is another must-own collection from the master of hand-drawn mayhem. -- JERRY BECK, Animation Historian

Flicker Alley, the Film Noir Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive are proud to present film noir standout The Man Who Cheated Himself in a brand-new Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition. The brilliant restoration work and in-depth supplementary materials mark this release as the prime suspect to pursue. Blinded by love, homicide lieutenant Ed Cullen (Lee J. Cobb, fresh off originating the role of Willy Loman on Broadway in Death of a Salesman) goes to great lengths to cover up a murder. His coquettish girlfriend Lois (Jane Wyatt, best known as the mother in Father Knows Best) has killed her scheming husband before he could bump her off. John Dall (Gun Crazy) co-stars as Ed s kid brother Andy, a rookie on the force who is determined to break his first big case. These accomplished actors are nearly eclipsed by the incandescent star power of San Francisco and especially the world s most photographed bridge, the Golden Gate. In the hard-boiled film noir tradition, reminiscent of the work of James M. Cain, greed, unstoppable sexual attraction, and betrayal set off a doomed course in which a femme fatale leads a once upstanding citizen down a dark path. The first independent production of Phoenix Films, the company run by Jack M. Warner, son of Warner Bros. Studios mogul Jack L., and a highlight in the lengthy career of director Felix E. Feist (Deluge), The Man Who Cheated Himself goes all the way. Flicker Alley is excited to present this world-premiere Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition of The Man Who Cheated Himself, restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive and funded by the Film Noir Foundation. This is the third collaboration between Flicker Alley and the Film Noir Foundation, following the deluxe 2016 home video releases of Too Late for Tears and Woman on the Run two previously lost highlights of the genre saved from oblivion. Bonus Materials: The Man Who Cheated Himself Revisited : Produced by TVP Enterprises and the Film Noir Foundation, this mini-documentary offers a behind-the-scenes examination of the film s original production. The Man Who Cheated Himself Locations Then and Now : City Sleuth (aka Brian Hollins) leads a virtual tour around San Francisco hunting down the many locations used during the production of The Man Who Cheated Himself. Souvenir Booklet: Featuring rare photographs, poster art, original lobby cards, and an essay by the Czar of Noir Eddie Muller.
