A Moment Of Romance 05/24 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: In Stock
Release: August 22, 2023
Description
Small-time hood Wah Dee (Andy Lau, Infernal Affairs) is enlisted by Triad boss Trumpet (Tommy Wong, The Killer) as a getaway driver for a daring heist that goes wrong. Thinking fast Dee takes Jo Jo (Jacklyn Chien-Lien Wu, The Barefooted Kid) hostage to save his skin, but the bosses order her to be killed. They escape and begin a forbidden relationship while being chased by both sides of the law. Produced by Johnnie To (Throwdown) and Ringo Lam (City on Fire) the film is sensationally directed by Benny Chan in his feature debut. With a breakneck pace and violence reminiscent of To and Takashi Miike and the beautiful and emotive sensibility of Wong Kar-wai, the film features stunning performances from Lau, and Wu in her debut work. A Moment of Romance is a classic of Hong Kong cinema that has been much imitated but rarely bettered. Heroic Trio / Executioners (Criterion) 4K UHD Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: 4K UltraHD
Stock: In Stock
Release: February 20, 2024
Description
The star power of cinema icons Maggie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Michelle Yeoh fuels these gloriously unrestrained action joyrides from auteur Johnnie To and action choreographer Ching Siu-tung. The Heroic Trio and its sequel, Executioners, follow a new kind of justice league: a team of blade-throwing, shotgun-toting, kung fu–fighting heroines who join forces to battle evildoers in a dystopian, noirish city. Blending dazzling martial-arts mayhem with exhilarating blasts of comic-book lunacy, these beloved superhero movies reimagine the genre through the giddy genius of the Hong Kong film industry at its height. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restorations of The Heroic Trio and Executioners, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks One 4K UHD disc of the films and two Blu-rays with the films and special features Alternate English-dubbed and 5.1 surround Cantonese soundtracks New interview with actor Anthony Wong New interview with film critic Samm Deighan (cohost of the podcast Twitch of the Death Nerve) Trailers New English subtitle translations PLUS: An essay by critic Beatrice Loayza THE HEROIC TRIO With this outrageously entertaining cult favorite, director Johnnie To and his lineup of legendary stars gave Hong Kong cinema something new: its own homegrown superhero cinematic universe. Thief Catcher (Maggie Cheung), Wonder Woman (Anita Mui), and Invisible Girl (Michelle Yeoh) are kick-ass crusaders who must overcome their dark pasts in order to defeat an evil, baby-snatching eunuch terrorizing the city. Eye-popping motorcycle stunts, bloodthirsty undead, cannibal infants, and kinetically choreographed wirework are all part of the wall-to-wall delirium in this irresistible showcase for three of the coolest women warriors ever to hit the screen. EXECUTIONERS Maggie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Michelle Yeoh return in this gritty, postapocalyptic sequel to The Heroic Trio. Following a devastating nuclear attack, Hong Kong’s supply of clean water has fallen into the hands of a masked maniac (Anthony Wong) intent on seizing political power—forcing the three fearless fighters to settle their differences and unite to stop him. Darker in tone than the original, Executioners finds Johnnie To and codirector/martial-arts choreographer Ching Siu-tung continuing to push their whirlwind action set pieces to new levels of cartoon craziness, while adding an abundance of grungy, dystopian atmosphere and a fresh dose of antiauthoritarian attitude.

Movie star icon Michael (Louis Koo, Throw Down) sinks into a depression after being publicly dumped at the altar by his former fiancée. After embarking on a drunken bender, he is found in a mountain forest, lost and barely responsive, by Sue (Sammi Cheng, Internal Affairs), who runs the local guesthouse and is still grieving the loss of her husband, who mysteriously disappeared in the woods several years prior. As Sue slowly nurses Michael back to health and the pair learn more about their shared pasts, they embark on a journey to find catharsis in each other. Running On Karma 03/25 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: Short Wait
Release: January 28, 2025
Description
The tenth collaboration between co-directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, after a run of comedies, romances, action films and historical epics, Running on Karma is a crime thriller with a strong Buddhist streak, headlined by Hong Kong star Andy Lau. Big (Lau) once lived as a Buddhist monk, but abandoned the religious life because he could not endure his strange gift: he can see people's past lives and foresee how karma will shape their present and future. Now working as a bodybuilder, he is pulled into using his sixth sense for good when he meets Lee Fung-yee (Cecilia Cheung), a police officer hunting a killer. As the pair grow closer and close in on the murderer, their bond is strained by the fact that Big can see Lee's past lives as well. Balancing genre excitement with serious philosophical questions about spirituality and faith, the film ranks alongside Mad Detective among To and Wai's most distinctive works, and the Masters of Cinema series presents it on Blu-ray for the first time outside Asia.

Description
One of the most personal films by the prolific Hong Kong auteur Johnnie To is a thrilling love letter to both the cinema of Akira Kurosawa and the art and philosophy of judo. Amid the neon-drenched nightclubs and gambling dens of Hong Kong’s nocturnal underworld, the fates of three wandering souls—a former judo champion now barely scraping by as an alcoholic bar owner (Louis Koo), a young fighter (Aaron Kwok) intent on challenging him, and a singer (Cherrie Ying) chasing dreams of stardom—collide in an operatic explosion of human pain, ambition, perseverance, and redemption. Paying offbeat homage to Kurosawa’s debut feature, Sanshiro Sugata, To scrambles wild comedy, flights of lyrical surrealism, and rousing martial-arts action into what is ultimately a disarmingly touching ode to the healing power of friendship. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restoration, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack Interview from 2004 with director Johnnie To New interviews with coscreenwriter Yau Nai-hoi, composer Peter Kam, and film scholars David Bordwell and Caroline Guo Short making-of documentary from 2004 featuring To and actors Louis Koo, Aaron Kwok, Cherrie Ying, and Tony Leung Ka-fai Trailer New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film critic Sean Gilman
