Crimes of Passion 06/16 Blu-ray (Rental)

Release: July 26, 2016
Description
In the early eighties British enfant terrible Ken Russell travelled to America and placed his unorthodox imprint on a pair of US movies. The first was the Altered States, so out-there it's screenwriter disowned it. The second was the equally crazy Crimes of Passion, starring Kathleen Turner (Body Heat, Serial Mom) at the height of her powers. Fashion designer Joanna Crane (Turner) leads a double life. By night she is China Blue, a prostitute who's attracted the unwanted attention of two men. One is a sexually frustrated private detective hired by her employees. The other is psychopathic priest (played by Norman Bates himself, Anthony Perkins) in possession of a murderous sex toy. With it's outré screenplay by Barry Sandler and over the top score by Rick Wakeman, Crimes of Passion may just be the most outrageous Ken Russell film ever made - and that's quite some feat!

Product Description Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta ignite intense action in LADDER 49 on Blu-ray Disc. Packed with adventure and suspense, this star-powered saga goes above and beyond the call of duty in this explosive new format. Firefighter Jack Morrison (Phoenix) grows from inexperienced rookie to seasoned veteran in a job that makes him a hero to strangers yet often shortchanges his family -- until he becomes trapped in the worst blaze of his career and must decide who and what are important to him. Feel the heat from searing special effects in 1080p, and hear the scream of sirens with 5.1 48 kHz, 24-bit uncompressed audio. Fully experience this tale of uncommon courage with Blu-ray High Definition! Amazon.com In paying simple tribute to firefighters, Ladder 49 gets to the heart of those who risk their lives for a living. Director Jay Russell brought similar sincerity to his memorable family favorite My Dog Skip, and despite the banalities of an ultra-conventional screenplay by Lewis Colick, Ladder 49 generates so much goodwill toward its Baltimore firemen that you may find yourself unexpectedly overcome with emotional appreciation for guys like Jack (Joaquin Phoenix), a firefighter whose career, courtship, marriage, and fatherhood are viewed in flashback as he struggles to survive in the present-day framing scenes, cut off from his fellow firemen in the fiery guts of a collapsing 20-floor building. There are no surprises in the familiar scenes of male bonding, dangerous rescues, injury and death, and the supportive concern of Jack's wife (Jacinda Barrett), but by focusing on the simple integrity of Jack's personal and professional commitment, the movie gives Phoenix a showcase for unselfish virtue, while John Travolta provides dignified support as Jack's mentor and devoted firehouse captain. Ladder 49 is routine in most respects, but it's a much-deserved valentine to working-class heroes. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description Horror-meister John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape from New York) teams Kurt Russell's outstanding performance with incredible visuals to build this chilling version of the classic The Thing. In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Once unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them. Bonus Content: U-Control: Picture in Picture Feature Commentary with Kurt Russell and Director John Carpenter Review Howard Hawks's original 1951 production of The Thing from Another World can be glimpsed playing on a TV that fateful October evening in John Carpenter's blockbuster hit, Halloween (1978). A few years later, Carpenter reteamed with his Escape from New York star Kurt Russell to do a remake. But while the first movie version of The Thing was in atmospheric black and white, Carpenter's 1982 version is in widescreen, full color, and features some of the most revoltingly explicit, surreally imaginative special effects (courtesy of FX-meister Rob Bottin) that have ever been seen on the screen. Researchers in the remote Antarctic dig up the remains of a spacecraft that has long been frozen in the ice. But the alien life unthaws and infects the living (not only humans but sled dogs too), living and gestating inside them. (This horrific concept was also explored in the two versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the Alien movies.) This Thing is chilling in every sense of the word, with plenty of terrifying, adrenaline-pumping moments that build it to a powerful and shockingly nihilistic conclusion. It's a harsh and uncompromising movie (hewing more closely to the original 1930s story "Who Goes There?")--so much so that it probably never would have been given a green-light by any studio in the more cautious and doggedly upbeat 1990s. --Jim Emerson

TRAPPED ASHES, 2006, 105 min. In the twisted tradition of classic anthology horror films such as TALES FROM THE CRYPT, CREEPSHOW and BLACK SABBATH, TRAPPED ASHES features stories of the surreal, macabre and bizarre, helmed by five of Hollywood's most unique directors: Joe Dante (GREMLINS, THE HOWLING), Ken Russell (ALTERED STATES, THE DEVILS), Monte Hellman (TWO-LANE BLACKTOP), Sean Cunningham (FRIDAY the 13th), and John Gaeta (Academy Award winner, Visual Effects on THE MATRIX) - and produced & written by Deaf Crocodile's own Dennis Bartok! Seven strangers (including legendary character actors John Saxon and Henry Gibson) are trapped inside an infamous Roger Corman/AIP-style House of Horrors during a Hollywood movie studio tour and forced to confess their most disturbing personal memories. In Ken Russell's The Girl with Golden Breasts, a struggling actress (Rachel Veltri) decides to get gel implants made from reprocessed human cadavers - with monstrous results for her and her boyfriend (Jayce Bartok). In Sean Cunningham's Jibaku, an unhappily married woman (Lara Harris) and her architect husband (Scott Lowell) have a nightmarish encounter with a dead monk on a visit to Japan. In Monte Hellman's Stanley's Girlfriend (Official Selection, 2006 Cannes Film Festival), two ambitious young filmmakers become unlikely friends in 1950s Hollywood: Leo (Tahmoh Penikett), writer of sadistic B-pictures like The Strangler, and a soon-to-be-famous director named Stanley Kubrick (Tygh Runyan). When they both fall in love with the same enigmatic woman (Amelia Cooke), it unleashes a decades-long mystery involving desire and celluloid. And in John Gaeta's My Twin, The Worm, a young Goth woman (Michele-Barbara Pelletier) reveals the horrific, Cronenberg-like tale of the inhuman twin that grew alongside her in her mother's womb. Newly scanned and restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile.
