Behind the Door 03/17 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray

Release: March 18, 2025
Description
Flicker Alley and San Francisco Film Preserve proudly present the return of Irvin V. Willat’s Behind the Door (1919), paired for the first time with his Below the Surface (1920), both newly restored by the SFSFF and available in their most complete versions. Flicker Alley’s initial publication of Behind the Door was honored as Best Blu-ray/DVD disc at Il Cinema Ritrovato in 2018. Legendary producer Thomas H. Ince and director Irvin V. Willat made Behind the Door —“the most outspoken of all the vengeance films” according to film historian Kevin Brownlow—during the period of World War I-inspired American patriotism. Hobart Bosworth stars as Oscar Krug, a working-class American, who is persecuted for his German ancestry after war is declared. Driven by patriotism, Krug enlists and goes to sea. However, tragedy strikes when his wife (Jane Novak) sneaks aboard his ship and is captured following a German U-boat attack. Krug’s single-minded quest for vengeance against the sadistic German submarine commander (played with villainous fervor by Wallace Beery) leads to the film’s shocking and brutal climax. Willat then reteamed with Bosworth the following year with Below the Surface, setting the star as deep sea diver Martin Flint who, along with his son, Paul (Lloyd Hughes), become heroes after saving the lives of a downed submarine crew. Unfortunately, their fame draws the attention of George Webb’s James Arnold, who enlists Paul in a deadly scheme involving sinking ships, lost treasure, and the love of Grace Darmond's Edna Gordon. These newly restored editions represent the most complete versions of these films available, thanks to the San Francisco Silent Film Festival working in partnership with the Library of Congress and Gosfilmofond of Russia. Each film features a new score by Stephen Horne.

Blob 1958 Blu-ray (Rental)
$7.99
Format: Blu-ray
Stock: In Stock
Release: March 12, 2013
Description
A cult classic of gooey greatness, The Blob follows the havoc wreaked on a small town by an outer-space monster with neither soul nor vertebrae, with Steve McQueen (The Great Escape) playing the rebel teen who tries to warn the residents about the jellylike invader. Strong performances and ingenious special effects help The Blob transcend the schlock sci-fi and youth delinquency genres from which it originates. Made outside of Hollywood by a maverick film distributor and a crew whose credits mostly comprised religious and educational shorts, The Blob helped launch the careers of McQueen and composer Burt Bacharach, whose bouncy title song is just one of this film’s many unexpected pleasures.

50,000,000 juvenile delinquents can't be wrong! Featuring four rumble-ready features (all preserved from the Something Weird DigiBeta and S-VHS masters, as the original film elements are lost, decayed, or inaccessible), TEENAGE RIOT VIDEO PARTY is a campy ode to mid-century teenage turmoil. Remember: "This will affect every parent and teen in the entire world . . . because it's real!" LOST, LONELY, AND VICIOUS (1958, 72 mins, B&W) Filmed in the wake of James Dean’s death, this noir-ish slice of Dean-spolitation is the best movie about Hollywood ever made in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. JACKTOWN (1962, 58 mins, B&W) Feeling like a gaudy juvenile delinquent paperback come-to-life, this teen prison expose was filmed on the sleazy streets of Michigan and features a role from Patty McCormack (THE BAD SEED). THE FLAMING TEEN-AGE (1956, 69 mins, B&W) Jesus (kind of) saves in this "true story" about drugs and salvation from Irvin S. Yeaworth, a maker of 16mm religious shorts who would later direct THE BLOB. THE NARCOTIC STORY (1958, 78 mins, Color) This outrageous amalgam of classroom scare films and nasty exploitation was produced by a company called Police Science—so you know it's legit. Bonus Features: 1. LOST, LONELY, AND VICIOUS, JACKTOWN, & THE FLAMING TEEN-AGE: Preserved from the original 2000s Something Weird DigiBeta masters 2.
