Product Description A woman's idyllic middle-class life is disrupted when her husband brings home a beautiful young orphan to be their maid. At first she welcomes the pretty girl, in fact seems strangely fixated on her, but soon comes to suspect the girl of having an affair with her husband. At the same time odd, unexplained incidents - most involving the maid's mysterious wooden doll - begin to make her question her own sanity. Soon it all spirals out of control and the film climaxes in a fever pitch of sexual jealousy, murder, and supernatural vengeance, all set to a pounding synth score. Almost completely unknown outside its home country, Suddenly In The Dark is one of the best examples of pre-millennial K-horror. It was made at a time when censorship laws were being liberalized, igniting a boom in horror and erotic films. Elements of both are present here, directed with bizarre flair by Go Yeong-nam in a style often compared to the wilder Italian films of the 70s and 80s. Mondo Macabro is proud to present this classic of Korean horror on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world. Our presentation has been restored from the best available elements from the Korean Film Archive, and features brand new extras produced exclusively for this release. Special Features: Interview with producer David Suh Interview with critic Kim Bong-seok Korean Cover Cavalcade Newly created English subtitles Mondo Macabro previews Review A mysterious psychological study... that beguiles the viewer right up to its bizarre closing image. ---Darcy Paquet A gem of South Korean horror cinema. ---Letterboxd A very entertaining and mysterious film from Go Yeong-nam. Another strong entry in South Korea's horror movie repertoire. ---Unknown Kino

Release: October 18, 2016
Description
"The King of Pigs, a tale of murder, revenge and classism, is the latest film from Korean anime director Yeun Sang-ho (The Fake). Unflinching in its depiction of violence, The King of Pigs begins moments after the brutal murder of a woman at the hands of her husband, a once-successful businessman, Hwang Kyung-mi (Oh Jeong-se, The Unjust), and flashes back to his school days and the abusive events that have shaped his life and that of his estranged fellow classmate Jung Jong-suk (Yang Ik-june, Always Behind You). As school boys, both men were considered part of a lower class of student known as pigs. Pitted against the affluent, upper-class dogs, the pigs hope an end to the abuse will come in the form of transfer student Kim Chul (Kim Hye-na, Flower Island), a rebel who will show the cowering students how to fight fire with fire."

Description
BLU-RAY TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION: OLDBOY + OLD DAYS Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, Oldboy is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre. Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he learns of his wife s murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors... Directed with immense flair by Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden) as the second instalment of his Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy blazed a trail at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival where it was lauded by the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. The film went on to become a huge international smash, blowing audiences minds with its concoction of filmmaking virtuosity, ingenious plotting, violence and pathos. A zeitgeist-defining sensation that distilled a global reckoning over class inequality into a tour de force of pop-cinema subversion, Bong Joon Ho’s genre-scrambling black-comic thriller confirms his status as one of the world’s foremost filmmakers. Two families in Seoul—one barely scraping by in a dank semibasement in a low-lying neighborhood, the other living in luxury in a modern architectural marvel overlooking the city—find themselves on a collision course that will lay bare the dark contradictions of capitalism with shocking ferocity. A bravura showcase for its director’s meticulously constructed set pieces, bolstered by a brilliant ensemble cast and stunning production design, Parasite cemented the New Korean Cinema as a full-fledged international force when it swept almost every major prize from Cannes to the Academy Awards, where it made history as the first non-English-language film to win the Oscar for best picture. Director-Approved Two-Blu-Ray special edition features. • New 4K digital master, approved by director Bong Joon Ho and director of photography Hong Kyung Pyo, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack • New audio commentary featuring Bong and critic Tony Rayns • Black-and-white version of the film with a new introduction by Bong, and Dolby Atmos soundtrack • New conversation between Bong and critic Darcy Paquet • New interviews with Hong, production designer Lee Ha Jun, and editor Yang Jinmo • New program about the New Korean Cinema movement featuring Bong and filmmaker Park Chan Wook (Oldboy) • Cannes Film Festival press conference from 2019 featuring Bong and members of the cast • Master class featuring Bong from the 2019 Lumière Festival in Lyon, France • Storyboard comparison • Trailers • Plus: An essay by critic Inkoo Kang.
