Description

When a young woman spends the night with an alleged terrorist, her quiet, ordered life falls into ruins. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum portrays an anxious era in West Germany amid a crumbling postwar political consensus. Katharina, though apparently innocent, suddenly becomes a suspect, falling prey to a vicious smear campaign by the police and a ruthless tabloid journalist that tests the limits of her dignity and her sanity. Crafting one of the most accessible and direct works of 1970s political filmmaking, Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta deliver a powerful adaptation of Heinrich Böll’s novel, a stinging commentary on state power, individual freedom, and media manipulation that is as relevant today as when it was released. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, approved by director Volker Schlöndorff and producer Eberhard Junkersdorf, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • Interview from 2002 with directors Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta • Interview from 2002 with director of photography Jost Vacano • Excerpts from a 1977 documentary on author Heinrich Böll • Trailer • PLUS: An essay by film critic Amy Taubin

Description

All Regions. International spy Mark returns to West Berlin after a mission to find that his wife Anna wants a divorce. She is having an affair but insists that isn't the reason. When Mark hires a private detective to get to the truth, an even more disturbing secret is uncovered - Anna keeps a separate apartment housing an otherworldly, tentacled creature with a ravenous sexual appetite (created by special effects legend Carlo Rambaldi of Alien fame). So continues the descent into a nightmarish maze of jealousy, carnality devoid of satisfaction, insanity, terror and murder-where identity and reality are almost impossible to distinguish. Set in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, infused with Cold War-era paranoia and tension, Possession is a film that defies classification. One of the most tortured portraits of a disintegrating marriage ever presented on screen, visionary director Andrzej Zulawski masterfully blends horror and thriller conventions into an utterly unique cinema experience-drawing on his own traumatic divorce and creative blacklisting in his native Poland. Notorious for the demands it placed on its stars, Adjani's searing performance earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1981. Savagely cut for the US market by bewildered distributors, and banned in the UK for almost two decades, it remains every bit as powerful and shocking today as it was on release.
