Wade Hunnicutt is a big man who casts a big shadow, one that looms over the Texas backwoodsmen who work his land…over the beautiful, embittered wife he cheats on…and over the sons – one from marriage and one illegitimate – who strive for their father’s respect. Robert Mitchum “gives one of his greatest performances” (Michael Barson, The Illustrated Who’s Who of Hollywood Directors) as Wade, and Vincente Minnelli directs this sprawling, emotionally volatile tale of an epic clash between generations. In early-career roles, George Peppard and George Hamilton costar as Wade’s sons, determined to be their own men, yet in danger of repeating their father’s life-crippling legacy of lust and violence.

Marlon Brando (On the Waterfront) set the mark for a brilliant career in the Men, his film debut. Brando plays an ex-WWII GI, Ken who returns home after he's paralyzed in battle. Residing the paraplegic ward of a veteran's hospital and embittered by his condition, he refuses to see his Fiancée (Teresa Wright) and sinks into a solitary world of hatred and hostility. Head physician, Dr. Brock (Everett Sloane) cajoles the withdrawn Ken into the life of the ward, where fellow patients Norm (Jack Webb), Leo (Richard Erdman) and Angel (Arthur Jurado) begin to pull him out of his spiritual miasma. High Noon writing and directing greats, Carl Foreman (The Guns of Navarone), and Fred Zimmermann (From Here to Eternity) worked together for the first time in this rousing drama nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar. Produced by the great Stanley Kramer (Inherit the Wind) with a haunting score by the legendary composer, Dimitri Tiomkin (Rio Bravo).

Description

Rod Serling’s tale of ruthless men and ambitious women clawing for control of a billion dollar empire first aired in Jan 1955 on Kraft Television Theater. The hard-hitting teleplay was such a success, earning Serling instant acclaim and the first of his six Emmy awards, that producers Jed Harris and Michael Myerberg helmed a big screen feature with the same director (Fielder Cook) and most of the same cast for United Artists. The result was an acid-etched chronicle of the cutthroat corporate world starring Van Heflin, Everett Sloane, and Ed Begley, with cinematography by Oscar winner Boris Kaufman (On The Waterfront, 12 Angry Men). This is boardroom bloodletting, the American way! This product is expected to play back in DVD Video "play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.
