Driven by a desire to forge a socially conscious Swedish cinema—one that broke with the inward-looking psychodrama of Ingmar Bergman to give dynamic expression to the everyday experiences of working-class Swedes—writer Bo Widerberg turned to filmmaking in the early 1960s, realizing his ambition in politically committed yet poetic works that merge social-realist themes with a refined, often breathtakingly beautiful visual sensibility. Dramatizing the struggles of ordinary people fighting to chart their own destiny, these four acclaimed, popular, and pivotal films from Widerberg’s most prolific period live and breathe with a rare vitality—and helped launch a new Swedish cinema. FOUR-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks New introduction to director Bo Widerberg by filmmaker Ruben Östlund New interviews with actor Tommy Berggren and cinematographer Jörgen Persson The Boy and the Kite (1962), a short film by Widerberg and Jan Troell, with an introduction by Troell Swedish television interviews with Widerberg from the 1960s Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of Elvira Madigan PLUS: An essay by film historian Peter Cowie and excerpts by Widerberg from his 1962 book Vision in Swedish Film Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Bo Widerberg’s New Swedish Cinema (The Criterion Collection) [The Baby Carriage/Raven’s End/Elvira Madigan/Ådalen 31] [Blu-ray]

Elvira's back and she's fabulous! With her voluptuous figure, voluminous black hair and hilarious one-liners, the essence of camp oozes from her pores. Elvira's Haunted Hills culls its outrageousness from the classic Vincent Price/Edgar Allan Poe/Roger Corman films of the early '60s, along with a little Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fearless Vampire Killers. The tale begins in 1851, when Elvira and her maid Zou Zou are en route to perform in the Parisian Revue "Yes I Can Can," but inadvertently end up at the sinister Lord Vladimere Hellsubus' medieval castle. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Vladimere's long-dead wife, Elvira learns of the Hellsubus curse and finds her life in danger. Will she escape the family curse and the evil Vladimere? And can she keep her hands off the stable hand long enough to save the day? Bonus Content: Restoration from a 4k Scan of the Original Camera Negative Introduction by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Audio Commentary with Actors Cassandra Peterson, Mary Scheer, Mary Jo Smith and Scott Atkinson and Director Sam Irvin Making-of Featurette Transylvania or Bust Elvira in Romania Interview with Actor Richard O'Brien Outtakes Photo Gallery

She’s back! Elvira, Horrorland’s hostess with the mostest, finally busts out on newly restored Blu-ray with this long-awaited, positively bursting-at-the-seams special edition of her big screen debut, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark! Having just quit her job as a Los Angeles TV horror hostess, Elvira receives the unexpected news that she’s set to inherit part of her great aunt Morgana’s estate. Arriving in the small town of Fallwell, Massachusetts to claim her inheritance, Elvira receives a less than enthusiastic reception from the conservative locals – amongst them, her sinister uncle Vincent, who, unbeknownst to Elvira, is in fact an evil warlock secretly scheming to steal the old family spellbook for his own nefarious ends… Campy, quirky and stuffed to the brim with more double entendres than your average Carry On movie, 1988’s Elvira: Mistress of the Dark helped solidify the horror hostess (played by Cassandra Peterson) as a major pop culture icon, here owning every inch of the screen with her quick wit, sass, and of course, cleaving-enhancing gown! In this grisly reinterpretation of Cinderella, a young maiden submits to a series of increasingly brutal cosmetic extremes to win the prince's love. THE NORTH AMERICAN DISC PREMIERE WITH 6+ HOURS OF SPECIAL FEATURES It redefined both fairy tales and body horror, stunned audiences at Sundance, was nominated for an Oscar® and remains a "cinematically exhilarating" (Vulture), "playfully grotesque" (Indiewire) and "undeniably vicious piece of entertainment" (RogerEbert.com).
