Condemned to hang for cannibalism, Alferd Packer tells the story of how he survived in the snow-covered Colorado mountains during a doomed hunt for riches. Persuaded to lead a party of gold prospectors on their expedition, he loses his cherished horse, Liane, and that loss sends the men stumbling into one mishap after another — run-ins with a very strange band of Indians, clashes with macho fur trappers, and assorted crude adventures — until they end up stranded in the dead of winter with nothing to eat.
