Description

Brazil's official selection for the 2024 Academy Awards, Pictures of Ghosts is a multidimensional journey through time, sound, architecture and filmmaking, set in the urban landscape of Recife, the Brazilian coastal capital of Pernambuco — a historical and human territory examined through the great movie theatres that served as spaces of conviviality during the 20th century. Having hosted dreams and progress, these places have also embodied a major transformation in social practices. Combining archive documentary, mystery, film clips and personal memories, it is a map of a city through the lens of cinema.

Description

Disc 2 (Blu-ray) contains the feature film (new 4K digital master, approved by director Kleber Mendonça Filho). Blending kinetic energy with elegiac historical sweep, Kleber Mendonça Filho links life under Brazil's twentieth-century military dictatorship to the present day in a kaleidoscopic period thriller. In 1977, a man (Wagner Moura) arrives in Recife under the alias Marcelo, hoping to make a fresh start with his young son. But the threat of violence closes in at once, and around him swirl corrupt cops, grimy hit men, haunted exiles, and a wild urban legend that sparks a public frenzy. Spinning continually off its temporal and narrative axes, the film unfurls an epic canvas teeming with life and love for those who refuse to submit to systems of oppression.
