Disc 2 contains Mahjong (1996), plus a new conversation between Chinese-cultural-studies scholar Michael Berry and film critic Justin Chang and a new interview with editor Chen Po-wen. Edward Yang follows A Confucian Confusion with another whirlwind Taipei comedy, this one sharper and darker in tone. In a city changing at breakneck speed, the paths of swindlers, hustlers, gangsters and expats keep crossing, with a naive French teenager (Virginie Ledoyen) and the gentle local boy (Lawrence Ko) trying to protect her caught dangerously in the middle. Savage, shocking, tender and bitingly funny by turns, Mahjong pictures a multicultural Taipei where nearly every human connection carries a price, and newfound prosperity comes at the cost of the soul.
