Winner of an Honorary Oscar® for lifetime achievement, Charles Burnett is one of the world’s most important filmmakers. In his astonishing The Annihilation of Fish, James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams, Claudine) stars as Obidiah “Fish” Johnson, a Jamaican widower recently released from a mental hospital, despite his continuing battles against an invisible demon named Hank. Relocating to Los Angeles, he moves into the boarding house of eccentric landlady, Mrs. Muldroone, (Margot Kidder, Superman). There he meets Poinsettia, played by Lynn Redgrave (Georgy Girl, Gods and Monsters), who has recently fled San Francisco and her fiancé, the ghost of composer Giacomo Puccini. Hailed by critics and audiences as funny, compassionate, and tender, Burnett’s long-lost film treasure is available for the first time. A quiet revelation of American independent filmmaking, Charles Burnett’s lyrical debut feature unfolds as a mosaic of Black life in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders), a father worn down by his job in a slaughterhouse, and his wife (Kaycee Moore) seek moments of tenderness in the face of myriad disappointments. Equally attuned to the world of children and that of adults, Burnett—acting as director, writer, producer, cinematographer, and editor—finds poetry amid everyday struggles in indelible images that glow with compassionate beauty. Largely unseen for decades following its completion in 1977, Killer of Sheep is now recognized as a touchstone of the groundbreaking LA Rebellion movement, and a masterpiece that brought Black American lives to the screen with an aching intimacy like no film before. A recent college graduate moves back home while struggling to launch her career and sort out her feelings about adulthood and romance.

Description

A slow-burning masterwork of the early 1990s, this third feature by Charles Burnett is a singular piece of American mythmaking. In a towering performance, Danny Glover plays the enigmatic southern drifter Harry, a devilish charmer who turns up out of the blue on the South Central Los Angeles doorstep of his old friends. In short order, Harry's presence turns a seemingly peaceful household upside down, exposing smoldering tensions between parents and children, tradition and change, virtue and temptation. Interweaving evocative strains of gospel and blues with rich, poetic-realist images, To Sleep with Anger is a sublimely stirring film from an autonomous artistic sensibility, a portrait of family resilience steeped in the traditions of black mysticism and folklore.
