Jacques Demy's sung-through musical made Catherine Deneuve a star as Geneviève, the daughter of a Cherbourg umbrella-shop owner, radiant in her first love with garage mechanic Guy. Drafted to fight in Algeria, Guy leaves her behind pregnant and pledged to wait; distance and circumstance force both of them into new lives before they meet again. Photographed in saturated candy colors and carried entirely by Michel Legrand's songs, it remains one of the most beloved and unconventional musicals ever made.
