Description

Ken Russell’s first Hollywood film, adapted by Paddy Chayefsky from his own novel, is the definitive head trip of its era — part drug-fuelled freak-out, part creature feature, part love story, played at full intensity throughout. Researcher Eddie Jessup (William Hurt) makes himself the subject of his own mind-expanding experiments, and they carry him on an ever more perilous, substance-driven journey from humanity’s prehistoric origins to the far edges of consciousness. Russell renders it all as a psychedelic explosion of imagery running from the pagan to the cosmic, building to a climactic struggle between the intellect and the heart.
