Picking up where Volume One left off, this sophomore collection of Hong Kong cinema classics draws together many of the best films from the final years of the Shaw Brothers studio, proving that while the end was nigh, these merchants of martial arts mayhem weren’t going to go out without a fight! Armed with stunning special features and ravishing new restorations, this boxset is even bigger and bolder than the last one. We begin with kung fu master Lau Kar-leung’s instant classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, in which his adoptive brother Gordon Liu achieved overnight stardom as the young man who unexpectedly finds spiritual enlightenment on the path to vengeance; Lau and Liu followed the original with two comically inventive sequels, Return to the 36th Chamber and Disciples of the 36th Chamber, both included here. Already established as a genius at blending dazzling action with physical comedy, Lau himself plays the lead role in the hilarious Mad Monkey Kung Fu, coupled here with Lo Mar’s underrated Five Superfighters. Next, we once again meet Chang Cheh’s basher boy band the Venom Mob in no less than four of their best-loved team-ups: Invincible Shaolin, The Kid with the Golden Arm, Magnificent Ruffians and culminating in the all-star Ten Tigers of Kwangtung, co-starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. After Lau brings us perhaps his best high-kicking comedy with My Young Auntie, a playful star vehicle for his real-life muse Kara Hui, we see Shaw Brothers fully embracing Eighties excess in our strangest double feature yet: Wong Jing’s breathtakingly wild shoot-‘em-up Mercenaries from Hong Kong, and Kuei Chih-hung’s spectacularly unhinged black magic meltdown The Boxer’s Omen. Last but certainly not least, Lau Kar-leung directs the last major Shaw production, Martial Arts of Shaolin, filmed in mainland China with a hot new talent named Jet Li in the lead role; it is paired in this set with The Bare-Footed Kid, a reverent remake of a Chang Cheh classic with Johnnie To (Running Out of Time) in the director’s chair and Lau back on fight choreography duties, in arguably the ultimate filmed tribute to Shaws’ everlasting cinematic legacy. Description

After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced action icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, master director Lau Kar-leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) retooled his latest martial arts epic, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to the fallen star. Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as the family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, deeply traumatized; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies, however, the warrior-turned-monk realizes he must renounce his peaceful ideals in order to mount a rescue mission and avenge his family. Made during the legendary Shaw Brothers studio's twilight years as a filmmaking powerhouse, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter is often regarded as director Lau’s masterpiece, as elegiac and suffused with anguish as it is thrillingly violent (not least in its bone-crunching, teeth-smashing climax). This spectacular box set comprises 11 classic martial arts films from the famous Shaw Brothers' library, featuring some of their greatest stars—Jimmy Wang Yu (One-Armed Swordsman), Cheng Pei-pei (Come Drink with Me), Lo Lieh (King Boxer), Ku Feng (The Five Venoms), and David Chiang (The Boxer From Shantung). Many of these films are debuting for the first time on Blu-ray. Get ready for some exciting thrills and chills as heroes meet villains in a duel to the death! The Assassin In the same year that director/writer Chang Cheh and star Jimmy Wang Yu revolutionized Hong Kong kung fu cinema with One-Armed Swordsman, they also collaborated on this epic of the Six Kingdoms era. Here, Yu is a two-armed swordsman who is also a Wei Empire patriot. Inside the Han Empire, Han Kuei, who comes from the royal family, assumes full power and wants to eliminate loyal officer Yen Sui. Later, our main character is betrayed by a jealous rival and becomes a village butcher. But when he meets Yen Sui, he is sent back on the road of vengeance. Chiao Chiao, the lovely and talented costar of One-Armed Swordsman, here plays Hsia, the love of the hero's life and the strong woman who survives to protect their child. The Thundering Sword Superstar swordswoman Cheng Pei-pei, (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), stars as the daughter of the Poison Master in a Romeo and Juliet-style martial arts adventure concerning a search for the magical "Heaven and Earth" weapon in The Thundering Sword. The Golden Swallow The indomitable martial arts team of director Chang Cheh and stunt choreographer Liu Chia-liang continues the compelling saga of The Golden Swallow from King Hu's Come Drink with Me in this sequel of heartbreaking romance, intrigue and stunning action. The Jade Raksha Thanks in great part to Cheng Pei-pei, women in martial arts movies played a more central role in the plots and the swordswomen of the genre became some of the most charismatic figures in Hong Kong cinema. In The Jade Raksha, Cheng Pei-pei becomes a human combine harvester as she hacks and whacks a path through life, avenging the death of her family under the moniker "The Jade Raksha." The Bells of Death The Bells of Death is a whirlwind story about a man embarking on a life-long journey to master the sword, then find and eliminate the three men who killed his family and abducted his sister. The Sword of Swords Jimmy Wang Yu had just exploded into superstardom as One-Armed Swordsman when he teamed with respected writer/director Cheng Kang for this tale of master martial artists vying for the title blad—a "weapon of exceptional brilliance." And with legendary martial arts choreographers Lau Kar-leung and Tang Chia directing the action, the result is a superb, flat-out adventure of intrigue, deception, and an abduction, delivering one battle after another until it culminates in an amazing all-out slaughter. Killer Dart Rampaging bandits are pillaging peaceful Chinese villages until the grieving dart master Liu Wen Lung sets out with his student, son, and servant to avenge his murdered wife and set things right. Renowned director Ho Meng-Hua—soon to be internationally famous for The Flying Guillotine—masterfully balances action with intrigue and romance, as the path of righteousness is littered with lies…and corpses. The Invincible Fist The Invincible Fist is one of the few films where the godfather of the kung fu film Chang Cheh headlined Lo Lieh as the leading hero three years before Lo would become the Shaw Brothers' first international star in King Boxer (aka Five Fingers of Death). Here he plays a dedicated chief constable for Tsang Chou village who falls in love with the blind daughter of a bandit who is wreaking havoc. Joining him in all the action and emotion are award-winning actor Ku Feng and future superstar David Chiang. Dragon Swamp Cheng Pei-pei, the screen's greatest swordswoman, teams with Lo Lieh for this amazing, fast-paced adventure of the "Martial Arts World"—where everyone is killing to gain the famous "Jade Dragon Sword." Fascinating characters, like the Roaming Knight and the Master of Dragon Swamp, clash in this family feud, which takes place over twenty years. In addition to the spectacular fights, this special production holds an emotional wallop for the finale. The Flying Dagger Godfather of the kung fu film, director Chang Cheh is famous for introducing the revolutionary concept of "yanggang" (macho) martial arts movies. Until then, female stars (often in male swordsman roles) ruled the screens. This collaboration between him and swordswoman supreme Cheng Pei-pei is exceptional indeed. Cheng could hold her own with any man, freeing Chang to create the best of all possible martial arts worlds. The Golden Sword Lo Wei remains internationally famous for directing Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan's first major movies. Cheng Pei-pei is now internationally famous for her superlative villainous role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But both were superstars in Hong Kong for decades prior, so any teaming of the superlative "swordswoman supreme" and the vaunted director/writer/actor is cause for celebration. Kao Yuen joins them as a noble swordsman, and award-winning actor Ku Feng stars as the Frontier Terror in the evocative and effective "Martial Arts World" adventure. Bonus Content: Disc 1 - The Assassin (1967): Audio Commentary by David West, Critic and Author of Chasing Dragons: An Introduction to the Martial Arts Film Celestial Trailer Disc 2 - The Thundering Sword: From a Western Perspective: An Interview About the Transnational Appeal of The Shaw Brothers with Academic Leon Hunt, Author of "Kung Fu Cult Masters: From Bruce Lee To Crouching Tiger" Interview with Author and Critic Kim Newman About The Western "Breakthrough" Films of Sir Run Run Shaw, Which Took the Producer From East To West Celestial Trailer Disc 3 - The Golden Swallow: Audio Commentary by Hong Kong-Based Academic and Filmmaker Gilbert Po Interview with Actress Cheng Pei-Pei by Frédéric Ambroisine Celestial Trailer Original Theatrical Trailer Disc 4 - The Jade Raksha: Slicing at the Stars: An Interview with Critic and Hong Kong Film Expert Tony Rayns, About The Emergence, Key Players, and Success of The Shaw Brothers Wuxia Film A Very Vocal Violence: Hong Kong Based Dubber Peter Boczar Reflects on His Time Behind the Microphone for a Number Of Martial Arts Masterpieces. Ho Li-Chun, an attractive but powerful swordswoman, fights at a tournament at Prince Kuei's Palace. In 1970, veteran producer Raymond Chow broke free of Shaw Brothers to form Golden Harvest, recruiting a plethora of skilled technicians, innovative choreographers and future superstars. Among them, the young Nora Miao helped put the fledgling company on the map and reinvigorated the female-led wuxia genre, showcasing all her talent and charisma in The Blade Spares None and The Hurricane. In Teddy Yip's surrealist wuxia The Blade Spares None, Miao plays Ho Li-Chun, a swordswoman seeking revenge for her father's assassination by an avaricious fiend posing as a prince. Alongside her righteous comrades Tang Ching-Yun (Patrick Tse Yin, Shaolin Soccer) and Chen Jo-Yu (James Tien, Fist of Fury), they'll defeat anyone who stands in their way in their pursuit of the imposter prince. Fresh off the success of The Big Boss, Golden Harvest's leading filmmaker Lo Wei directs Miao, once again alongside Patrick Tse Yin in The Hurricane, an action-packed tale of conspiracy and treachery, where our heroes must form an unlikely alliance to try and stop a corrupt minister from betraying the Empire. Prior to her eventual crowning as the female kung fu protagonist par excellence playing opposite Bruce Lee, Nora Miao was at the top of her aerial swordplay form, shining as a formidable warrior with supernatural fighting prowess in two of Golden Harvest's earliest triumphs, newly restored for their Blu-ray debuts. Product Description From the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers comes the martial arts epic masterpiece. Starring Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li, Curse of the Golden Flower reveals a dazzling and spectacular world that will change the way you think of martial arts forever. Amazon.com Curse of the Golden Flower, a fictionalized historical glimpse into the brutally complicated politics of Emperor Ping's (Chow Yun Fat) reign during the Tang Dynasty, shows the viewer just how far a megalomaniac must go to gain and retain power in medieval China. Lavish sets, massive ceremonial displays, and perversely fascinating battle scenes impress similarly to the special effects Americans have come to love and expect from Chinese action films like Zhang Yimou's previous House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. An intricate plot involving the Emperor's wife, Empress Phoenix (Gong Li) and their three sons, Crown Prince Xiang, Prince Jie, and Prince Cheng, most closely follows the Empress's secret plan to force abdication upon her corrupt husband as revenge for his slowly poisoning her with Black Fungus tea. Opening on the eve of the Chysanthemum Festival, 928 A.D., the Empress obsessively embroiders gold chysanthemums to adorn her army's uniforms while hatching plans with Jai to overthrow the Crown Prince for control of the throne. Meanwhile, a side plot develops as the Emperor's ex-wife and mother to Crown Prince Yu reemerges as Yu's lover. By the time the Festival occurs, family members are pitted against each other in a King Lear-ian web of lies that can only result in demise. The most sophisticated narrative aspect of Curse of the Golden Flower is that as the royal family crumbles, the Emperor's death grip on China remains unwavering. Gorgeous scenes set in the palace and costume design displaying China's upper class decadence cannot fail to entertain. The paradox between good and evil, here, is highlighted by how the Emperor successfully rules despite, and because of, his utter cruelty. --Trinie Dalton

A rediscovered gem in the filmography of Hou Hsiao-hsien (The Assassin, Three Times, Flight of the Red Balloon), DAUGHTER OF THE NILE is a neon-lit, contemporary drama named after a Japanese manga series. With Hou's gentle but keen observation, the film follows a young woman and her brother float along the periphery of the Taipei underworld, intriguingly blending the gangster tale with mood-drenched introspective drama. Based on the personal experiences of screenwriter, Chu T'ien-wen (Millennium Mambo; Goodbye South, Goodbye; City of Sadness) DAUGHTER OF THE NILE is a profoundly moving observation of marginalized youth. A 4K restoration.

Another Kung Fu vehicle from the infamous Shaw Brothers Studio, 'Disciples of Shaolin' AKA 'Hong quan xiao zi', delivers a typically power-packed Hong Kong tale of enemy gangs and super cool fight scenes. When shaolin disciple Kuan Fung Yi (Sheng Fu) takes a job at a textile factory he soon becomes embroiled in a bitter and violent clash with the rival Manchu clan who run a neighboring mill. Product Description Josh (Louis Corbett) and Ling (Li Lin Jin) thought they were in for a boring vacation with each of their parents (Sam Neill and Wang Ji) at an archaeological dig in China. It turns into an adventure of a lifetime when they discover a mournful dragon trapped deep inside a mystical temple. According to ancient legend, the dragon is missing its life force, a sacred pearl that is hidden away in a secret chamber. Josh and Ling must battle evil forces (and some very skeptical parents) in their heart-stopping journey to return the magical pearl to its rightful owner. Special Feature: Original Theatrical Trailer Review Kids and the young at heart will love this movie! This is a remarkable film which includes a quest for a dragon pearl and is, in several ways, similar to "E.T." in that it has characters helping out a dragon (instead of an alien) and they even are given the ability to fly! The kid actors are terrific... ---The Dove Foundation The Dragon Pearl is an exciting, live-action adventure… Combining martial arts moves, an all-powerful dragon, an ancient legend, and a quest, middle-grade kids should enjoy The Dragon Pearl, and their parents probably won't mind the time spent. -Common Sense Media Solid and safe family entertainment! ---Filmcriticsunited The Dragon Pearl is a thoroughly pleasing and exceedingly well-crafted family film. ---sbs.com/au

*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* The peaceful animals of a Taiwanese forest live in harmony until a pack of wolves launches a brutal attack. Uncle Deer sacrifices himself defending the community and sends word to his son, the Deer Warrior. But the Deer Warrior is locked in a rivalry with Elk over the affections of the beautiful Miss Deer, a conflict stoked by the scheming Erotic Fox, who conspires with the wolves' leader. Incorporating elements from Aesop's Fables and performed entirely by live-action actors in animal costumes, this extraordinary Taiwanese-language fantasy from critic-turned-filmmaker Chang Ying was shot in the mountains of Beitou and is widely read as a political allegory of Taiwan under martial law. Restored in 2K by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute from a 35mm duplicate negative as part of the Taiwan Film Project, initiated by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture. Bonus Features: 1. A Deer in the Ruins of Paradise - On The Fantasy of the Deer Warrior. 32-page essay 2. Photo and Poster Gallery 3. Audio commentary with Patrick von Sychowski (Cultpix) and Shih-Ching Tsou (Director/Writer/Producer - Left-Handed Girl) 4. Taiwanese Cinema in the Sixties. Video essay by Adrian Smith
