Product Description Sally, a young girl, moves to Rhode Island to live with her father and his new girlfriend in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own. Amazon.com Fondly remembered for scaring the Tab out of impressionable viewers, 1973's television movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark stands today as a minor classic of irrational dream-logic horror, with an ending that goes straight for the worst-case scenario. Despite (or perhaps because of) its wonky effects, minimalist character development, and snicker-worthy Freudisms, it knows how to linger into the wee small hours. Cowriter-producer Guillermo del Toro's mash note of a remake is a superior movie in virtually all aspects, really, yet it somehow fails to ping the same whimpering neurons. Director Troy Nixey's film follows the same basic blueprint as the source material--a fractured family (Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, and Bailee Madison) moves into a dark old house, only to be tormented by a gaggle of tiny chatterbox demons--but with a much greater emphasis on the mythology and back story of the creatures. Del Toro has long proclaimed his love for the original movie, and it's rather fascinating to see the filmmaker attempt to shoehorn his own trademark obsessions (grim fairy-tale origins, spooky little girls, odd Lovecraftian angles, etc.) into the existing material. Still, such Gothic curlicues, however nifty, ultimately end up diluting the solid-state nightmare fuel of the premise. Aside from a few solid shocks and a strong performance by Holmes, this heartfelt redo is unlikely to have the same lasting effect on audiences as the much cruder original. Instead of focusing on the hows and whys, that one just wanted to freak the viewer out. --Andrew Wright

*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* 40th anniversary special edition At the height of the 1980s, following their breakthrough documentary P4W: Prison for Women, filmmakers Janis Cole and Holly Dale turned their lens on Vancouver’s Davie Street neighborhood, a bustling, neon-soaked hub for both trans and cisgender sex workers informally known as “the prostitution capital of Canada.” The result was HOOKERS ON DAVIE, a landmark document combining candid interviews with a group of instantly memorable subjects and vivid location footage of their street work, surreptitiously captured with hidden cameras. An indelible community portrait, the film culminates in the group’s collective efforts to challenge and overcome legislative oppression. Much lauded upon its release in 1984 and no less potent – or engrossing – 40 years later, HOOKERS ON DAVIE showcases Cole and Dale’s deeply humanist approach, bringing care and compassion to subjects often represented in more reductively moralistic terms. Meet “The Wolfpack,” a gang of smug, hard-partying predator bros who spend their nights drugging women and bragging about their conquests. But their reign of non-consensual sleaze comes to a brutal end when a masked maniac from their past resurfaces… and starts settling the score in the most painful and humiliating way possible. One by one, the hunters become the hunted as the mysterious killer delivers a twisted, poetic justice and turning them inside out. Sporting a grotesque ass mask and the strap on from hell, the Sodomaniac tears through the pack in a barrage of depraved, over-the-top carnage and vengeance that pushes all slasher tropes to their outrageous extremes. But beneath the in your face, punk rock surface, SODOMANIAC operates as a raw piece of outsider horror—reflecting the street level ethos of microbudget filmmaking while channeling a grim sense of morality and justice. Directed by music video veteran Anthony Catanese, the film stands as a confrontational artifact of underground cinema, where provocation and dark humor intersect with a distinctly regional, do it yourself sensibility. Equal parts abrasive, offensive and audacious, it remains a striking example of revenge horror pushed to its most uncompromising limits.
