The first two feature films of the most beloved comedy team in movie history make their Blu-ray debut from ClassicFlix, remastered and beautifully restored, in Laurel and Hardy - The Restored Features, Volume 1. In the mid-1920s, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were both hard-working comedians for producer Hal Roach, making silent audiences laugh as individual performers. They began working as a team in 1927's Putting Pants on Philip, and their two-reel comedies soon led the pack at Roach, powered by their great popularity with moviegoers. Four years later Roach gave the pair a shot at features, and this collection holds their first two: Pardon Us (1931, in its theatrical version) and Pack Up Your Troubles (1932). In Pardon Us, restored by ClassicFlix, Stan and Ollie become guests of the state after foolishly selling a policeman some of their homemade beer. A spoof of MGM's acclaimed prison drama The Big House (1930), it features many of the wonderful supporting players from the Roach lot, including June Marlowe, James Finlayson, Walter Long, Wilfred Lucas, Tiny Sandford, Harry Bernard, Otto Fries and Charlie Hall. Pack Up Your Troubles, restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and The Film Foundation with funding from the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, finds the Boys overseas during World War I, unleashing their patented brand of comic mayhem. Their favorite nemesis, Finlayson, returns, joined by Don Dillaway, Jacquie Lynn, Mary Carr, Richard Cramer, Tom Kennedy, Charles Middleton, Grady Sutton and Billy Gilbert, as well as co-director George Marshall, who appears on screen as a vengeful Army chef.

Although their names are synonymous with the very idea of comedy, few of the original negatives for Laurel and Hardy’s early silent work survive, elements only available from scattered sources throughout the world, often in substantially less than pristine shape. It took the team at Blackhawk Films four years to gather all surviving film elements, to meticulously compare them shot by shot, and to complete the best digital restorations possible. Today, these beloved shorts look as new as they did nearly a century ago. Le Pont du Nord (1981) is an entrancing puzzle film with the city of Paris as a continually shifting game board. It is one of director Jacques Rivettes most mysterious and haunting works, a dark companion piece to Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974). Marie (Bulle Ogier, L'amour Fou, Maitresse) has just been released from prison, and encounters the paranoid loner Baptiste (Pascale Ogier, Full Moon in Paris). They follow Marie's ex-lover Julien (Pierre Clementi) and his talismanic briefcase as Paris begins to open up to them as a series of enigmatic clues. The city is a labyrinth of possibilities but no certainties, a place of fantastical fables (here be dragons) and the brute realities of the street.
