There's an unusual harvest at Falbury Farm: beans, hay show tunes. It's a bumper crop, too, with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly leading all the hoofing, singing and sparking. In her final MGM musical, Garland plays Jane Falbury, a farm owner more than a bit riled when her aspiring-actress sister (Gloria De Haven) shows up with a theatrical troupe that wants to stage a musical in the family's barn. Any guess who becomes the show's sudden star after its lead runs off with a Broadway actor? Highlights include Kelly's shuffle-and-squeak "You, Wonderful You" dance solo making use of loose boards and newspaper on the floor, tuxedo-topped Garland's leggy, joyous "Get Happy" and a Kelly/Phil Silvers country-bumpkin bit of "Heavenly Music" backed by woofing canines. After a show like this, how're you gonna keep these kids down on the farm?

A showbiz partner often thinks his sidekick is a pain in the neck. Lewis and Clark have lower anatomical opinions of each other. In writer Neil Simon's warm stage-to-screen adaptation, Walter Matthau and George Burns play feuding vaudevillians reteaming for a TV special - if they survive rehearsals. Matthau earned a 1975 Best Actor Golden Globe Award and Oscar nomination for his cantankerous Willy Clark. And as hilarious deadpan Al Lewis, George Burns turned his first on-camera film role in 36 years into a Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winning performance and a relaunch of his movie career. Also winner of Golden Globes for Best Comedy/Musical and for Best Supporting Actor Richard Benjamin, The Sunshine Boys is comic perfection from masters of the art.

Kittenish teens Patti (Jane Powell) and Melba (Debbie Reynolds) turn a 1900s family vacation in the Catskills into Two Weeks with Love, a bright entertainment that may come as a surprise to those who think there is nothing new under the musical sun (The Hollywood Reporter). Patti is fluttery over a suave older man (Ricardo Montalban) and thinks romance will bloom if her disapproving parents let her wear... a corset! With that longed-for garment, 18-year-old Patti is sure she'll look like a more mature woman. Meanwhile, Melba stalks a local boy (Carleton Carpenter) with lovestruck determination. In a sensational showstopper, Reynolds and Carpenter tear into a version of Aba Daba Honeymoon, so frisky and charming it became a smash-hit record. Busby Berkeley staged all the numbers, including Row, Row, Row and a dream sequence that has corseted Powell wowing Montalban with, of all things, an aria from The Chocolate Soldier. Aba daba, what a delight!

With powerful conviction, Nikolaus Lehnhoff interprets Wagner's Lohengrin as the dramatic struggle of masculine and feminine, revenge and compassion. Powerfully acted, almost like a Strindberg play, and musically of the highest order, this Lohengrin from the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden will be a benchmark production for decades. With his extraordinarily transparent interpretation of the title role, Klaus Florian Vogt leads an inspired cast to visionary realms that are rarely touched, let alone captured on High Definition film and in pure surround sound. The monumental sets by Stephan Braunfels and Kent Nagano's sublimely well balanced musical interpretation complete a deeply moving total theatre experience. Press Reviews "Whoever believes to already know all nuances of Lohengrin should go to Baden-Baden: soloists, chorus and orchestra are brilliant - and the production leaves barbed afterthoughts in your mind...There has not been a Lohengrin like Klaus Florian Vogt, the young tenor from Hamburg, for many years...his voice is pure, clean, whiter than snow. Not of this world. Ideal for this role." (Frankfurter Algemeine) "Thomas Grimm gets his cameras in close, leaving the singers to track reactions to solo utterances but missing some crucial interplay. Within a natural sound spectrum, some tweaking has been done to pull out solo lines in ensemble, but the emotions of Lehnhoff's vision ring true and will give pleasure." (Gramophone) Cast Klaus Florian Vogt (Lohengrin) Solveig Kringelborn (Elsa) Hans-Peter König (Vogler) Waltraud Meier (Ortrud) Tom Fox (Telramund) Roman Trekel (King's Herald) Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester; Kent Nagano Production Company: Baden-Baden Festspielhaus Stage Director: Nikolaus Lehnhoff Disc Information Catalogue Number: OABD7026D Date of Performance: 2006 Running Time: 279 minutes Sound: 2.0 PCM & 5.1 DTS Aspect Ratio: 1080i High Definition / 16:9 Subtitles: EN, FR, DE, ES, IT Label: Opus Arte

Heaven's harps and wings are nice, but what showman extraordinaire Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. wants most now that he's no longer on Earth is to put on another extravaganza. It would have the brightest stars and creative talents. The most in glamour, gams and optimism. In short, it would be like Ziegfeld Follies. With a who's who of credited and uncredited Hollywood talents, this all-star revue is heaven to fans of musicals. Fred Astaire dazzles once, twice four numbers in all. Red Skelton reprises his funny Guzzler's Gin skit. Esther Williams swims, Lena Horne sings, and Judy Garland spoofs snobbery. There's Verdi opera and Fanny Brice vaudeville. Patter and pantomime. And The Babbitt and the Bromide, with Gene Kelly joining Astaire in their first-ever screen pairing. What a show! The man called Flo must be proud.
