Take the conventions of the American teen movie, transpose them to Los Angeles’s freaky fringes, anchor them in an unapologetic vision of sexual fluidity, and top it all off with heavy doses of Gen X disillusionment, gonzo violence, and hallucinogenic surrealism, and you’ll end up with something like these audacious transgressions from New Queer Cinema renegade Gregg Araki. Gleefully mixing slacker irony with raw sincerity, Godardian cool with punk scuzz, the savagely subversive, hormone-fueled films that make up the Teen Apocalypse Trilogy pushed 1990s indie cinema into bold new aesthetic realms, while giving blistering expression to adolescent rage and libidinal desire. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 2K digital restoration of Totally F***ed Up and new 4K digital restorations of The Doom Generation and Nowhere, supervised and approved by director Gregg Araki, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks One 4K UHD disc of The Doom Generation and Nowhere and two Blu-rays with all three films and the special features New conversation between director Gregg Araki and filmmaker Richard Linklater New audio commentary on Nowhere with Araki and actors James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Jordan Ladd, Sarah Lassez, Guillermo Diaz, and Jaason Simmons Audio commentary on Totally F***ed Up with Araki, Duval, and actor Gilbert Luna Audio commentary on The Doom Generation with Araki, Duval, and actors Rose McGowan and Johnathon Schaech New documentary on the trilogy’s visual style featuring Araki, Duval, producer Andrea Sperling, cinematographer Jim Fealy, costume designers Cathy Cooper and SaraJane Slotnick, production designer Patti Podesta, art director Michael Krantz, and hair and makeup artist Jason Rail James Duval’s Teen Apocalypse Archive, a new conversation between Araki and Duval Q&As with Araki, moderated by filmmakers Gus Van Sant and Andrew Ahn The Doom Generation video comic book Trailers English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by critic Nathan Lee TOTALLY F***ED UP A delirious mix of punk nihilism and deadpan irony, the first film in Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy puts an audaciously queer spin on Jean-Luc Godard’s classic Masculin féminin. Across fifteen jagged episodes, Totally F***ed Up plunges headlong into the lives of a group of queer, disaffected Los Angeles teenagers who form a kind of makeshift family as they navigate desire and heartbreak, societal and familial rejection, and the alienation of growing up gay in an era of relentless moralizing. Both a defiantly raw anthem of outsiderhood and a furious reckoning with all-American homophobia, Araki’s answer to the 1980s teen comedy captures youthful angst with an immediacy that still bruises. THE DOOM GENERATION Gregg Araki takes a road trip to hell in this wild, meth- and fast-food-fueled joyride through the margins of a menacing American wasteland. When they inadvertently link up with a dangerously alluring drifter (Johnathon Schaech), a chilled-out Cali bro (James Duval) and his spiky, foulmouthed girlfriend (Rose McGowan) find themselves on an increasingly violent, kinky, and darkly comic journey in which erotic tensions rise along with the body count. Working with a significant budget for the first time, Araki employs boldly stylized lighting and art direction to create a heightened sense of unreality in a shocking, shoegaze-soundtracked chronicle of young lives careening toward oblivion. NOWHERE You can practically smell the pheromones wafting off this kaleidoscopic odyssey, which finds director Gregg Araki crossing soap-operatic elements with blasts of science fiction, indie-kid cool, and shiny pop-art subversion. On the day when the world is foretold to end, a group of terminally horny, disillusioned, zonked-out teens in Los Angeles see their lives explode in a glitter bomb of drugs, sex, death, and alien abduction. Bisexual lust, vaporizing Valley girls, sinister televangelists, nipple-ring S&M, murder by Campbell’s-soup can—Araki folds it all into an anarchic orgy that brings his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy to an explosively caustic close.

A hallucinatory biopic that breaks all cinematic conventions, Walker, from British director Alex Cox, tells the story of nineteenth-century American adventurer William Walker (Ed Harris), who abandoned a series of careers in law, politics, journalism, and medicine to become a soldier of fortune and, for many months, the dictator of Nicaragua. Made with mad abandon and political acuity—and the support of the Sandinista army and government during the contra war—the film uses this true tale as a satirical attack on American ultrapatriotism and a freewheeling condemnation of “manifest destiny.” Featuring a powerful score by Joe Strummer and a performance of intense, repressed rage by Harris, Walker remains one of Cox’s most daring works. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES Restored high-definition digital transfer, approved by director Alex Cox, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack Audio commentary by Cox and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer Dispatches from Nicaragua, a documentary about the filming of Walker On Moviemaking and the Revolution, reminiscences about the production twenty years later from an extra on the film Walker 2008 and On the Origins of “Walker” (2016), two short films by Cox Behind-the-scenes photos Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: Essays by film critic Graham Fuller, Wurlitzer, and actor Linda Sandoval

Description

This is a documentary about fame, the meaning of success, identity and relationships set against the backdrop of the career trajectory of the band The Darkness. Their rise to worldwide fame was sudden, the implosion was brutal, there were some strange wilderness years apart and the comeback has been a work in progress since 2011 which has seen multiple album releases and multiple tours across Europe, Australia/NZ and America. Our main protagonist, Justin Hawkins, the bands front man and singer, is the primary focus - without him the band doesn't exist, and it's he that has been and is the pied piper of their merry dance. Justin's personal journey is one of losing his identity in a hurry under the apprehension (misapprehension?) that he needed to embody the 'rockstar' trope from top to bottom and subsequently of a rebirth by slowly rediscovering his identity - this time through the hard work required to become sober and of writing new music and rebuilding the bands reputation. Dan Hawkins, his brother, is the engine driving Justin and their relationship and dynamic are both critical to understanding why and how Justin keeps going as well as being one of the key vehicles revealing the true Justin. Dan is known as the 'dad' of the band - the solid rock, stellar musician and possibly the most levelheaded. Frankie has been with them since the beginning and is in some ways a barometer and a shrewdly quirky analyser of their journey, something of an outsider in some ways. Rufus joined the band in 2015 and is the young, carefree new drummer perhaps reminiscent of Justin and the bands former, younger selves. He inadvertently lives the rock star life on their behalf. There is a sense that Rufus has helped Justin rediscover his identity, which was lost quite quickly when the band became successful. The story is told primarily through actuality shot with the band over a period of 5- 6 years, as well as a small amount of animation and some archive material to illustrate their early rise to fame. There are a number of guest interviewees, including Ed Sheeran, Bryan Adams, Jo Whiley and Roger Taylor. In summary, the overall structure of the film will briefly establish their early rise to fame and the implosion, but the bigger part will address their slow haul back to whatever success now means. On the rollercoaster of pitfalls, cringe-worthy moments, challenges, exhaustion, laughs, camaraderie and fun times, they are forced to examine the meaning of 'success'. In the end we'll also see how their past and present journeys have changed each of them, and what the future might look like. We'll have seen what being a rock star really means - the fantasy, the repercussions and the reality and we'll have seen the power of relationships, and perhaps have witnessed some cathartic resolutions. Bonus Materials Over an hour of outtakes of the band An unmissable rockumentary Alex Bilmes Esquire Magazine This documentary gives us an entertaining 'comeback' narrative arc for the Darkness, the British neo glam-rock band with outrageous campy stylings, sparkly catsuits and real songwriting talent. The directorial debut of actor Paul Dano reveals a filmmaking talent of remarkable intelligence and restraint. Adapted by Dano and Zoe Kazan from the novel by Richard Ford, this meticulously crafted portrait of the American nuclear family in crisis charts the rift that forms within a 1960s Montana household when the father and breadwinner (Jake Gyllenhaal) abruptly departs to fight the forest fires raging nearby, leaving his restless wife (Carey Mulligan, in a performance of fearless emotional honesty) and teenage son (Ed Oxenbould) to pick up the pieces. A deeply human look at a woman’s wayward journey toward self-fulfillment in the pre-women’s-liberation era and a sensitively observed, child’s-eye coming-of-age tale, Wildlife poignantly illuminates the complex ways in which families function, fall apart, and find their way. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 2K digital master, with 5.1 surround DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack • New interviews with director Paul Dano, screenwriter Zoe Kazan, actors Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, cinematographer Diego García, production designer Akin McKenzie, and costume designer Amanda Ford • New conversation on the film’s postproduction with Dano, editor Matthew Hannam, and composer David Lang • Film at Lincoln Center conversation from 2018 between Dano and novelist Richard Ford about the film’s source material • PLUS: An essay by critic Mark Harris
