VCI is pleased to present RAIN, celebrating its 90 Anniversary in a stunning new 4K restoration, produced from the original, uncut 94-minute version. It is a most important film in the history of the cinema, and one of the greatest films the 'Thirties' produced. The consummate dramatic and artistic achievement of both Miss Crawford and Walter Huston will give the picture life for many decades to come. W. Somerset Maugham's powerful story of Sadie Thompson has perhaps the most celebrated version, vividly capturing the lives of several very different human beings, thrown together on Pago Pago during a fierce monsoon. Brilliant performances are given by Crawford, as the cynical prostitute, and Huston, as the minister who tries to reform her. A 'tour de force' of camera work, style and direction of a film that caused controversy when first released, 'Rain' is one of the true classic dramas of film history. Academy Award® winner Judi Dench (Skyfall, Quantum of Solace) stars in this shocking true story of a woman accused of high crimes against her government. Joan Stanley (Dench) is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information—including details on the building of the atomic bomb—to the Soviet government for decades. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical (Tom Hughes); and the devastation of WWII, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. Based on a sensational true story, Red Joan vividly brings to life the conflicts—between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal—of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history. Repeat Performance, the most requested film in the early years of the Film Noir Foundation's restoration campaign, is finally available in digital form! An amazingly original hybrid of film noir, supernatural fantasy, and backstage melodrama, the film stars Joan Leslie as a Broadway actress who magically relives the previous year of her life, but can she alter the fateful mistakes and misjudgments that led to a New Year's Eve tragedy? Think of it as film noir's answer to It's a Wonderful Life or a full-length precursor to The Twilight Zone.Produced as a rare prestige picture by fledgling Eagle-Lion Pictures, the movie features an array of vivid performances: 21-year-old Joan Leslie as Sheila Page, her first mature role following a parade of teenage ingenues at Warner Bros.; Louis Hayward as her husband Barney, a bitter and vengeful playwright; Virginia Field as Sheila's personal and professional rival, Paula Costello; Tom Conway as suave stage producer John Friday; and Richard Basehart in his movie debut as poet William Williams, one of the era's most sensitive depictions of a gay artist. In the years after it's 1947 release, Repeat Performance seemingly vanished. For many who'd seen it, the film's startling premise and stunning set-pieces became merely a tantalizing memory. It fell so far off the cultural radar people began to think they'd only imagined the movie. But thanks to the dedication and diligence of the Film Noir Foundation, Repeat Performance was restored in collaboration with UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Packard Humanities Institute. And now, it lives again in a beautiful Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition loaded with special features. Robert Alda stars alongside musical greats Al Jolson, Paul Whiteman, and Oscar Levant in this lavish fictionalized biography of composer George Gershwin. The film traces Gershwin's rise from a song plugger for a Manhattan music publishing company to the heights of international fame and fortune. Gershwin's first big hit is Swanee, introduced on Broadway by Al Jolson (playing himself). In collaboration with his lyricist brother, Ira (Herbert Rudley), George pens hit after hit in show after show. But George's kindly old music teacher wants his prize pupil to aspire to something more artistic. Gershwin responds with Rhapsody in Blue, which debuts at Aeolian Hall in 1924 under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman (also playing himself). As his fame and workload grows, George finds he has no time at all for romance; the two ladies in his life both eventually realize that they'll always have to play second fiddle to Gershwin's muse. Newly remastered from 4K scans of nitrate materials, this new Blu-ray disc restores over 12 minutes of footage never before seen by the general public, and also includes the outstanding overture of Gershwin melodies which only accompanied the film during its New York and Hollywood premiere engagements.

In 1975, in an America defined by both the self-mythologizing pomp of the upcoming bicentennial and ongoing sociopolitical turmoil, Bob Dylan and a band of troubadours—including luminaries such as Joan Baez, Allen Ginsberg, and Joni Mitchell—embarked on a now-legendary tour known as the Rolling Thunder Revue, a freewheeling variety show that was part traveling counterculture carnival, part spiritual pilgrimage. Director Martin Scorsese blends behind-the-scenes archival footage, interviews, and narrative mischief, with a magician’s sleight of hand, into a zeitgeist-defining cultural record that is as much a concert “documentary” as it is a slippery, chimerical investigation into memory, time, truth, and illusion. At the center of it all is the magnetic Dylan, a sphinxlike philosopher-poet singing, with electrifying conviction, to the soul of an anxious nation. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital transfer, approved by director Martin Scorsese, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • New interviews with Scorsese, editor David Tedeschi, and writer Larry “Ratso” Sloman • Restored footage of never-before-seen Rolling Thunder Revue performances of “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here with You” and “Romance in Durango,” and of a never-before-seen cut of “Tangled Up in Blue” • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by novelist Dana Spiotta and writing from the Rolling Thunder Revue tour by author Sam Shepard and poets Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman

In this vivid melodrama, Joan Crawford is Sadie McKee, who must choose between love (with Gene Raymond) and money (with Edward Arnold) and eventually gets both (with Franchot Tone). Crawford had an amazing ability to adapt her screen persona with changing times. She was a frenetic flapper in the '20s, a chin-up working girl in the '30s, and a film noir femme fatale in the '40s. Here she is at her Depression-Era peak as Sadie, a maid who sacrifices all for love, suffers like crazy but somehow winds up happy at the end. The leading lady gets excellent support from her three co-stars. Tone (who was soon to become Crawford's second husband)and Raymond are compelling as the handsome young suitors in her life, one good, one a scoundrel. And Edward Arnold is particularly memorable in his sympathetic portrayal of the millionaire drunk Sadie marries. But from rags to riches, from heartbreak to happiness, the film is all Crawford's.

A queer romantic comedy set in vibrant, multicultural New York City, Alice Wu’s irresistible feature debut breathed fresh life into the genre by combining snappy dialogue and a swooning love story with a poignant narrative about a mother and daughter coming to terms with each other. Just as Wil (Michelle Krusiec), a harried young surgical resident, begins a promising romance with the flirtatious dancer Vivian (Lynn Chen), her life is turned upside down when her more traditional Chinese mother (Joan Chen)—unwed and unexpectedly pregnant—moves in with her, forcing both women to confront the generational and cultural barriers that have long troubled their relationship. When Joan Crawford saw The Shining Hour on the Broadway stage, she pleaded with M-G-M executives to let her spread her acting wings in the film version. Ms. Crawford got her way, playing a New York siren who marries a prosperous farmer (Melvyn Douglas) and moves to Wisconsin. There she is drawn to his handsome brother (Robert Young), even as she befriends the brother’s selfless wife (Margaret Sullavan, Crawford’s choice for the role). The passionate triangle plays out in the best tradition of classic screen melodrama: glossy and chic, but resonant with honest emotion, all under the expert direction of the great Frank Borzage. The film’s heart-stopping climax with Crawford battling flames to rescue Sullavan from certain death is both literally and figuratively, incendiary filmmaking.

Humphrey Bogart… as a film producer cradling an ever-present Scottish Terrier? Don’t let the dog fool you as the famed tough guy also shows his flair for comedy in Stand-In (1937), a riotous, lacerating satire on the motion picture industry. New York bank Pettypacker and Sons has a problem, a colossal problem, in the form of their investment in Colossal Studios in Hollywood. Prior to selling the failing film factory to scheming financier Ivor Nassau (C. Henry Gordon) for half its worth, the board asks their top number cruncher Atterbury Dodd (Leslie Howard) for his assessment, and he ardently recommends the bank retain ownership of the studio. At an impasse, the firm sends Dodd out west to investigate the situation at Colossal, where he quickly enlists the help of producer Douglas Quintain (Bogart) and Lester Plum (Joan Blondell), a former child star now working in the occupation of the film’s title. Resistance to Dodd’s scrutiny, however, comes not only from Nassau, but from everyone who stands to benefit from the studio’s sale: temperamental “Russian” director Koslofski (Alan Mowbray), studio diva Thelma Cheri (Marla Shelton) and PR flack Tom Potts (Jack Carson at his obnoxious best). Directed by Tay Garnett (The Postman Always Rings Twice) and produced by Walter Wanger (You Only Live Once), Stand-In leaves no Tinseltown target untouched while serving up a sprightly mix of slapstick, send-up and sentiment… with screwball-inspired romance for seasoning! She suspects that Johnnie Aysgarth, the playboy who swept into her life and married her, is a murderer – and that she is his next intended victim. Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion slyly combines romance, mystery and atmospheric flourishes (like an eerie, glowing glass of milk, an effect achieved with a light bulb inside the glass). Joan Fontaine plays vulnerable, nerve-wracked Lina, following her acclaimed work in Hitchcock’s Rebecca with a striking performance that won the Academy Award and New York Film Critics Award as 1941’s Best Actress. Playing against type, Cary Grant makes Johnnie an imposing charmer, wastrel and cad. But also a killer? Like the glass that may or may not contain poison, Johnnie’s words and deeds may or may not be laced with menace.

Review Thunderstorms and extraordinarily grotesque murders pile up as Argento happily abandons plot mechanics to provide a bravura display of his technical skill. With his sharp eye for the bizarre and for vulgar over-decoration, it's always fascinating to watch; the thrills and spills are so classy and fast that the movie becomes in effect what horror movies seemed like when you were too young to get in to see them. Don't think, just panic. --Scott Meek, Time Out London SUSPIRIA is not just AN Italian horror movie - it is THE Italian horror movie⁖ It is the greatest triumph of a very specific branch of filmmaking, and deserving of a reputation even more grandiose than the one it enjoys. This isn't just a good, unnatural horror movie, it is one of the great works of cinema. --Tim Brayton, Alternate Ending Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA is easily one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It's one of the very few horror movies I can call perfect, and I rarely ever do that⁖ Dario Argento sneaks in such a simplistic premise under such a wonderful and masterful production that combines direction and a brilliant score for one hell of a nightmarish punch⁖ SUSPIRIA is a masterpiece that should be viewed by movie buffs, and film students alike. It' s an absolute standard of the genre. --Felix Vasquez, Cinema Crazed

Product Description The creative minds behind Disney-Pixar's groundbreaking animated blockbusters invite you back inside the toy box for a heartwarming and hilarious movie experience you'll never forget. In TOY STORY 3, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) and the rest of the TOY STORY gang return for an all-new adventure, along with a few new faces -- some plastic, some plush -- including Barbie's counterpart Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton), a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants (voiced by Timothy Dalton) and a strawberry-scented bear named Lots-O-Huggin' Bear (voiced by Ned Beatty). It's the "biggest, best, most exciting TOY STORY of them all," raves Access Hollywood's Scott Mantz. As Andy prepares to depart for college, Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of Andy's faithful toys wonder what will become of them. But, when a mix-up lands them at Sunnyside Daycare, they meet a host of new toys and soon discover a wild new adventure is just beginning! Buzzing with hours of bonus features including the Pixar short film DAY & NIGHT, TOY STORY 3 goes to infinity and beyond! Set Contains: The clarity of Blu-ray makes Toy Story 3 look terrific. The extras include Teddy Newton's extremely clever 2-D/3-D short "Day & Night," which juxtaposes imagery effectively, even without 3-D glasses. In some very funny behind-the-scenes footage, Spanish animator Carlos Baena shows how he worked out the movement style of the hilarious "Spanish Buzz." The mini-documentary The Gang's All Here features interviews with the returning and new vocal cast members. Blake Clark speaks poignantly about replacing his friend, the late Jim Varney, as Slinky Dog. In a rare interview, toymaker Albert Chan recalls how he decided to make Buzz and Woody toys after the big companies turned Pixar down: he's sold more than 35 million Buzz Lightyear figures to date. But the most satisfying extra is the Epilogue, which shows the toys at Sunnyside enjoying life without Lotso and Andy's Toys having fun in Bonnie's Room--including Mr. Pricklepants in an improbable staging of "Romeo and Juliet." --Charles Solomon
