Description
Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Before directing the legendary PENITENTIARY trilogy, Jamaa Fanaka helmed these two offbeat genre films, which helped catapult him to recognition as one of the most important black filmmakers working in 70s independent cinema. In Fanaka's debut feature, WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES, a young black man is sent to prison, after being brutalized by a corrupt racist cop. Upon release, he takes deadly revenge against the cops, lawyers, and thugs who got him busted, using a most unusual weapon... As much a parody of exploitation films as it is a proud piece of genre cinema, BROTHER CHARLES combines horror and blaxploitation tropes with stirring social subtext resulting in a drive-in movie unlike any other. Fanaka's second feature, EMMA MAE, tells the story of a naive young woman who moves from the Deep South to Watts. Initially finding herself at odds with her surroundings, Emma eventually gains acceptance from a local drug addict and dealer. But when he's arrested and jailed, she plans a daring bank robbery to bail him out... Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals and shot entirely on location in Watts, this uniquely subversive action film is an insider's view of black, working-class LA neighborhoods. Vinegar Syndrome brings these two landmark films to Blu-ray, newly restored from their original camera negatives. Bonus Features: 1. Newly scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm original negatives 2. "The History of the L.A. Rebellion & Jamaa Fanaka" - an appreciation by Jan-Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive 3. Post film Q&A with actress Jerri Hayes from a 2017 screening of EMMA MAE at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn, NY 4. Original theatrical trailer 5. Multiple original teaser trailers 6. Reversible cover artwork 7. English SDH subtitles

Description
Ngozi Onwurah’s radically ahead-of-its-time dystopian sci-fi film Welcome II the Terrordome—the first theatrically distributed British feature by a Black woman—furiously evokes a near future in which Black people are segregated within a slum called the Terrordome, where simmering violence and anger threaten to boil over in the wake of a young boy’s murder. Named after an incendiary single by Public Enemy, the film uses its rap soundtrack to both comment on and drive its narrative, part of a sensibility in which American, British, and African cultures collide and the past, present, and future collapse. In this prescient work, Onwurah builds a visionary, Afrofuturist cosmology that connects the history of slavery to modern-day systemic racial brutality. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 2K digital restoration, supervised and approved by cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack New audio commentary featuring Küchler, director Ngozi Onwurah, and Criterion curatorial director Ashley Clark Meet the Filmmakers: Ngozi Onwurah, a Criterion Channel original interview Three short films by Onwurah—Coffee Coloured Children (1988), And Still I Rise (1993), and Hang Time (2001)—with a new introduction by the director English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by poet and critic Kadish Morris

Description
This is a documentary about fame, the meaning of success, identity and relationships set against the backdrop of the career trajectory of the band The Darkness. Their rise to worldwide fame was sudden, the implosion was brutal, there were some strange wilderness years apart and the comeback has been a work in progress since 2011 which has seen multiple album releases and multiple tours across Europe, Australia/NZ and America. Our main protagonist, Justin Hawkins, the bands front man and singer, is the primary focus - without him the band doesn't exist, and it's he that has been and is the pied piper of their merry dance. Justin's personal journey is one of losing his identity in a hurry under the apprehension (misapprehension?) that he needed to embody the 'rockstar' trope from top to bottom and subsequently of a rebirth by slowly rediscovering his identity - this time through the hard work required to become sober and of writing new music and rebuilding the bands reputation. Dan Hawkins, his brother, is the engine driving Justin and their relationship and dynamic are both critical to understanding why and how Justin keeps going as well as being one of the key vehicles revealing the true Justin. Dan is known as the 'dad' of the band - the solid rock, stellar musician and possibly the most levelheaded. Frankie has been with them since the beginning and is in some ways a barometer and a shrewdly quirky analyser of their journey, something of an outsider in some ways. Rufus joined the band in 2015 and is the young, carefree new drummer perhaps reminiscent of Justin and the bands former, younger selves. He inadvertently lives the rock star life on their behalf. There is a sense that Rufus has helped Justin rediscover his identity, which was lost quite quickly when the band became successful. The story is told primarily through actuality shot with the band over a period of 5- 6 years, as well as a small amount of animation and some archive material to illustrate their early rise to fame. There are a number of guest interviewees, including Ed Sheeran, Bryan Adams, Jo Whiley and Roger Taylor. In summary, the overall structure of the film will briefly establish their early rise to fame and the implosion, but the bigger part will address their slow haul back to whatever success now means. On the rollercoaster of pitfalls, cringe-worthy moments, challenges, exhaustion, laughs, camaraderie and fun times, they are forced to examine the meaning of 'success'. In the end we'll also see how their past and present journeys have changed each of them, and what the future might look like. We'll have seen what being a rock star really means - the fantasy, the repercussions and the reality and we'll have seen the power of relationships, and perhaps have witnessed some cathartic resolutions. Bonus Materials Over an hour of outtakes of the band An unmissable rockumentary Alex Bilmes Esquire Magazine This documentary gives us an entertaining 'comeback' narrative arc for the Darkness, the British neo glam-rock band with outrageous campy stylings, sparkly catsuits and real songwriting talent. G. W. Pabst brought the war movie into a new era with his first sound film, a mercilessly realistic depiction of the nightmare that scarred a generation, in the director s native Germany and beyond. Digging into the trenches with four infantrymen stationed in France in the final months of World War I, Pabst illustrates the harrowing ordeals of battle with unprecedented naturalism, as the men are worn away in body and spirit by firefights, shelling, and the disillusion that greets them on the home front. Long unavailable, the newly restored Westfront 1918 is a visceral, sobering antiwar statement that is as urgent today as when it was made. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack - Hour-long French television broadcast of World War I veterans reacting to the film in 1969 - 2016 interview with film scholar Jan-Christopher Horak - New restoration demonstration featuring Martin Koerber and Julia Wallmüller of the Deutsche Kinemathek - New English subtitle translation - PLUS: An essay by author and critic Luc Sante

Description
A robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park. BOY, HAVE WE GOT A VACATION FOR YOU... In 1973, novelist-turned-filmmaker Michael Crichton made his directorial debut with Westworld, a groundbreaking fusion of science fiction and action-thriller that would prove decades ahead of its time, laying the groundwork for his later hit Jurassic Park and changing the face of sci-fi. Welcome to Delos, the futuristic resort where, for $1,000 a day, wealthy vacationers can live out their wildest fantasies in hyper-realistic theme parks. In the Old West zone, friends Peter (Richard Benjamin) and John (James Brolin) saddle up for adventure, unaware that their dream holiday is about to turn into a nightmare. When a malfunction sends the park's android hosts off script, the Gunslinger (Yul Brynner, in his iconic black-clad role) begins a relentless pursuit, obliterating the line between simulation and survival. Slick, suspenseful, and eerily prescient, Westworld combines a gripping man-versus-machine chase with thought-provoking questions about technology, control, and the price of playing God. Packed with atmosphere and memorable performances, this cult classic remains a landmark in genre cinema - a high-tech nightmare that never loses its bite.
